There is still time to give the gift of booze for the holidays! Check out the more or less official How to Drink collection over at Curiada - bit.ly/ShopSpiritsHTD
It's the time of year for holiday parties which means it's the time of year for egg nog. While I prefer my home made nog (recipe below), I thought it would be helpful to try out as many store bought egg nogs as I could find so I can let you know which ones are worth buying.
Greg's Nog:
In shaker
.5 oz or 15 ml Simple Syrup
.5 oz or 15 ml Luxardo Maraschino
2 oz or 60 ml Bourbon - Used Baker's
1 whole egg
Dry shake
Add ice and shake again
Strain into glass
Top with whole milk (or you milk of choice)
Grate some nutmeg and orange zest

For me, the store bought carton stuff occupies an entirely different space than real eggnog. I love all the homemade recipes I’ve tried, but the carton stuff is nostalgic and reminds me of decorating the Christmas tree as a kid. I don’t bother with boozing up the cartons either, at most I’ll just grate some nutmeg and orange over the top.

I've made Dr. Rebecca Lancefield's eggnog for years. She was a well-regarded microbiologist, and her recipe is safe and delicious. 1 dozen eggs 1 pint bourbon 1 quart rum 1 quart heavy cream 1 quart light cream (I use half and half because markets around here don't bother stocking light cream) Sugar to taste, usually about 1 pound Beat the eggs. While beating, pour in the alcohol. Keep beating as you add the booze - if you stop, the alcohol may coagulate the egg proteins and cause scrambled boozy eggs. (This is probably the step that makes the nog safe - the alcohol concentration is higher in this solution than salmonella and other bugs can stand.) Once the booze is incorporated, stir in the creams. Add the sugar and whisk until dissolved. Put the nog in a jar (makes a bit more than a gallon) and leave it in the fridge at least overnight. It's better after 3-6 weeks. I've aged this recipe five years or more - it never goes bad, it just gets smoother and nicer. Serve with a light grate of nutmeg. Variations: I've started using black strap rum and Demerara sugar to make a richer final product.

I actually like the SoCo Traditional over the store brands here in South Carolina. Fireball Whiskey also has one that goes HARD with the cinnamon flavor. In all honesty, I think the boozy brand name non-alcoholic nogs are supposed to be thinned out by adding the booze.

Greg, I have always steered clear of eggnog until Christmas 2020 when my girlfriend convinced me to make it at home. For all the reasons you listed and more, I DETEST store bought eggnog. Approaching Christmas 2021, I’ve consumed more egg nog in the last two weeks than I have in my entirely life up until now. Homemade nog with a nice high proof rum or bourbon are definitely the way to go. My life is forever changed.

I had this same experience about 5 years ago. I hated (store bought) eggnog. And my wife loved it. So I set to prove myself right. I was gonna make eggnog from scratch to decide whether it was an abomination or to one up what my wife loved. Then I was sold. Homemade man, nothing better. And I sold the whole family.

Hey Greg, I have a request that I suspect would be really helpful for a lot of people. Could you do a series on "keto" and other diabetic-friendly drink options? Basically using some sugar-alternatives that result in a similarly balanced experience? Eggnog is one thing I miss about the holidays now that I'm on keto. I've lost 70 lbs so far and I'm not above making my own eggnog to keep it sugar-free. -- Egg nog is definitely a trickier one since milk actually has a bunch of sugar in it, so maybe an alternative with almond milk or heavy cream instead might be a good workaround? :)

I don't watch EVERY show BUT when I saw the title I knew this one was REQUIRED watching. Love it. This was a fun one to watch. I tend to buy something like Bordon Egg Nog if it is available only because I've bought it for years. Recently I've tried a couple others that aren't half bad. My favorite is to make it from scratch in a fairly large batch with whipped cream, beaten and folded egg whites, etc. I do need to try your shaken egg nog. Single serving and fairly easy to make. You could use this approach for any of the seasonal drinks. Also for the common drinks. I did notice one of your video clips that used this approach. I just forget that show's topic.

I like egg nog once or twice a holiday season. Comes out the same time Anderson Erikson puts out it's limited release of dark chocolate milk and chocolate milk with mine. I've never really thought of drinking egg nog being like drinking cake batter but it makes sense since it's literally just flour away from being that. I've always thought of it is more as drinking a thawed out ice cream. Never have put it through the ice cream machine but that'd be just as easy.

I barely drink alcohol, I drink like 3 times a year but I love your content. I love non-alcoholic eggnog, but the only store bought version that I like is the Southern Comfort brand, I tend to cut it with more milk though, I think the store bought versions are meant to be diluted with alcohol as they're too strong of a flavor and too thick to be drunk by themselves.

My favorite eggnog comes from Homestead Creamery in Burnt Chimney, Virginia. If you live in the Mid-Atlantic region you can find their products at Kroger. All their milk products come in the traditional glass bottles in quart and half gallon sizes. The consistency is thick, but you can dilute it with milk, if your pallet is so inclined. I prefer to "dilute" mine with a generous portion of dark rum and a dusting of nutmeg. I affectionately call it "Egg-Grog".
