I love these Let's Read episodes (got a big smile on my face when I saw the notification)! I was a SNES kid back then, but the Genesis has a special place in my heart since I played it a lot at a friend's house. And to think that was almost 30 years ago... thanks a lot, Chris!

Ms. Pac Man was one of the all-time top ten sellers for the Genesis. It retailed for ten dollars which was unheard of for new cartridge games in the early 90s.

We need more of these 'Let's Read' videos. A lot more please. These are AMAZING and take me back to the 80's / 90's. I remember buying EGM and GamePro and renting games in my local store and playing games with my friends. It was the golden age of gaming.

Always enjoy your let’s reads! Gain Ground is such a unique game and has persevered as one of my favorite Genesis games. Glad to see it getting some respect.

The Chaos Emerald trick also works in Sonic 2, except you don't have to input a stage select. You can simply play the first level, collect some emeralds, reset the console, and when you play again it will remember the number of emeralds you collected. Very useful trick if you want to get them all extremely early in the game.

You’re right when you say that Road Rash epitomises the Genesis/Megadrive. For me the top 3 quintessential Genesis/Megadrive games are: Road Rash, Golden Axe and Streets of Rage. With Castle of Illusion an honourable mention.

Gain Ground is one of my favorites... They had a very bad take, but I have a feeling these guys were playing 5 mins of each game to get this guide out for the holidays

Thank you for the video! Sonic’s debug mode was really cool. You could add objects and rings anywhere you wanted, to the point where the whole game was crawling. very cool experience for me as a kid.

Great video! I really enjoy your perspectives on these old magazines and the games themselves. This was a fun time to be a Genesis fan - just before the SNES was out, and the library had gotten large enough that you could playground gloat all over your friends still stuck on NES.

Chris, Love these Catalog|Magazine read throughs. (Wish there was a pdf|scan to read along). Also debug mode in Sonic is really cool, I remember creating tons of rings and all cycling the enemy sprites and tiles from later levels early on. It was cool, it was my first insight to game dev at a young age.

I was a Nintendo NES, Game Boy and SNES kid way back, but the Sega Genesis has a good place in me since I played at a friend's house. I didn't have it until 2003, at that point, when the Gamecube, PS2, and the Xbox were in full swing.

ToeJam & Earl is a Roguelike, released years before the term was coined.

This brings back such good memories! I remember importing my first few Super Famicom games from Die Hard and Tommo back in the day. Square's Live A Live, The Great Battle III, one of the Dragon Ball RPGs and the G Gundam one on one fighter. Responding to the, "What they were charging back then," question: The yen was fairly strong, and this was the point at which cartridge games were hitting their twilight in terms of quality versus space, without throwing extra chips into them. In Japan, a typical later-day SFC or MD cart was on average anywhere from 8900 to 10600 yen. I remember paying around $125 for most of the Super Fami games I mention above. I remember poring over those ads (before Gamefan was a magazine of its own) and seeing the art -- that I now know was snipped from Japanese gaming magazines -- and screenshots and feeling like everything was so exotic and new. It's hard to imagine in this day and age, even for someone who has lived it, like myself, with everything being so pre-spoiled by constant coverage. I love how you mention that there were no prices, because I distinctly remember it always said "CALL" next to stuff you knew was going to be astronomically expensive. And back then, it was a long-distance call (unless you lived in the LA Metro). I recall getting permission to call about a Japanese PS1 in late 1994, because when you're a kid, a year is "literally FOREVER," haha. And of course, I was super bummed because they wanted like $750 for it and that would've wiped out my whole savings from my summer job! The horror! Thanks for taking us back into the 90s once again!
