EGO RYOBI GreenWorks cutting comparison
I'm glad I did this cutting test, definitely some good information. Maintenance cut, high grass cuts. I wanted to stress the mowers a bit to see the motor pushing power and also see the cut quality as well. I hope you find this video helpful in some way. Thanks so much for watching.

I just bought the greenworks. It's selling point was the one I got has 2 battery ports (and 2 batteries). And the turbo mode I expect will be very handy in my back sadly more neglected yard 😂. It's really hot where I live so I wanted to have one battery in the house's ac so I could swap in between from front and back yard. (or at least the option it'll be my first electric). Thanks for the video 👍

Thank you for this. I have been a Ryobi fanboy for a long time and was going to get their mower, but after a few review videos, it's clear I'm going with EGO. You had a great real-world test for those of us who don't cut our lawns twice a week and may miss a cut or two during the season.

I watched all the videos from the professional. Ego and green works dont even enter the picture. Milwaukee makes the best battery operated mower. Followed closely by the Ryobi. I wouldnt pay $999. I have watched seven different test and so far it seems EGO is turning out to be a winner. One thing another video brought out was the way EGO compared with competition was cleaner in the bag area, so even on my gas Honda, I could see the angle of the metal shoot backed up, but the EV EGO design caused the grass to be pushed back to the back of the bag, while some other EV or others had grass clumping in the tunnel or not pushed back far to the back of the bag. I live in Alabama on a mountain with much Gulf Coast rainfall, unlike many mid-western or western states. The southeastern states seem to get better rains in the summer because of the Gulf Stream most years. However, I must say this video and guy did a very well designed real world test. I will be damned if I ever let my grass get to 16 inches, but still interesting test and EGO did win in a good competition. I am looking forward to enhanced battery perhaps solid-state for better power ratio, faster charge times and for sure less issues with battery safety, lighter weight, etc., in five years. Toyota is going solid state and many others will make the move, unless some other design comes forward, all of which can be used in mowers too. I built a tornado shelter in my basement and also a 40 foot rubberized one inch thick textured ramp down the mt. to my backyard where I will soon build a storage unit about 1,200 feet from bottom of mt. to hold all my new EV tools, including a ridding EV mower, as unlike cars, EV lawn mowers are out selling all gas mowers, as who wants stinky gas, oil, & leaks, filters, plugs, and higher upkeep and by that time I will let my five man lawn crew go to yet another yard to work in the summer heat. Yet another feature the gas mowers did not have and would not work, is EV self-propelled mowers can fold and fit inside your garage or storage unit. Try that with gas and you would have a potential fire! I mostly for now want it only for leaves from January to late April, (Alabama Bermuda gets and needs at least six hours of Sun daily and it is thick like plush pile carpet) grass grows until end of December then my grass crew comes again usually late April, (who wants to cut in high temperatures and humidity)? I plan to use the EGO mostly for leaves during winter, as our mountains have 85% hardwood tree cover and billions of leaves to be bagged and put in dumpsters and that sure beats racking. I must say, having the lights will help regardless. Good to have a plan!

I'm not sure on Ego or Greenworks but my Ryobi cross cut has a problem holding grass underneath with thick , tall, damp grass. My older Ryobi did not hold as much. If I clean it out underneath about half way through backyard I have no problems and battery lasts longer. With normal maintenance cut and dry grass I have no problem. Front yard only stays wet for a short time after rain. Backyard needs a good day to dry out. Fun video to watch

If you think about it, kind of impressive that the Ryobi can duke it out with two mowers that have more capacity (pretty much 20 volts more in both cases). Their engines can draw more power.
@ehymander2062
@ehymander2062 2 года назад
Be careful comparing Volts to Volts, 40, 60, 80... they are also in varying Amp-Hours configurations which give you different Watt-Hours of available power. For example, 40V 6Ah = 240Wh of work. 80V 2.5h = 200Wh of work. Also, the battery design and composition will decide the peak output of the battery - how much power the battery can spit out in one shot. Think of the mower as sucking power from the battery through a straw. Some designs have much bigger straws. If the straw is too narrow, the battery will overheat trying to feed the motor. Lots to consider. Straight "Voltage" numbers is marketing. Watt-Hours is reality.

The Greenworks possibly has a design flaw that I encountered on previous models. On my older model the mulch bag hung very low and as is neared half, it would sad and drag on deep grass and when you turned at a sidewalk, the end would drag. This caused my bag to get holes in the rear corners. This Greenworks model appears to be a bit better, but the Ego and Ryobi put their bags up higher. This would be something that you should look at in future reviews.

i bought the Greenworks 60V Pro with 3 batteries and two blades on a Memorial Day sale for $375. I am more than happy with it. I bagged the first time I used it because the grass was tall and it looked like a golf course when it was done. Kind of wet grass too. Took 50% of the battery. Today I did it in mulch mode, dry grass, and it only took 25% battery. I haven't tried the high lift blade but ill probably wait until fall when i have to deal with leaves.

Rather than blowing off sidewalk and driveway drop the blade height to the lowest setting and put everything in the bagger . I don't know why but it will not pick up small twigs on hard surfaces. @MrKnightoflight I find my motor revs up quicker and I get a better cut and mulch when I removed the flat ‘top’ blade on my Ego. I then used the gator and high lift blade together. Make sure they both face the correct way ‘this side facing grass’, and offset them using the bumps on the blades to make the X shape. Then you can use just the main center bolt, to hold on both blades. It becomes clear once you put 2 lower blades together.

the only reason the EGO struggled with the mulch test is because he used the bagger lift blade. The EGO slaughtered Greenworks and Ryobi. In the first mulching contest, the worst choice, the high lift blade was used. That blade leaves the grass clippings the longest of all three choices of blades that came with the EGO. If the proper mulch blade was used, It would have won that contest hands down. To be fair, a mulching blade should have been used with all three mowers. It sounded like the Ryobi would have done much better, if the motor turned the same RPM as the Greenworks and the EGO. The lower RPM is why it didn't have the suction that the other two mowers had.

The newest version of the Greenworks is an 80volt model with a turbo button and is more powerful than the Ego Select Cut XP. I've owned the Ego Select Cut XP and it does not mulch that well on my lawn when it's thick, also about 9k square feet. Bags fine though. Ego does have a new mower out, thee 22inch aluminum, not sure how much better it is.

Great Video! Would've been interesting to see how the Greenworks would have compared with its high-lift blade installed. It was taped to the bottom of the mower box (It's possible they just started including them, I recently bought the mower). The wrapping the blade came in explains it is for long dense grasses as opposed to the standard high-efficiency blade already installed on the mower. Here is some info you might like. I have found the combination of the high-lift blade with the turbo button initiated, the greenworks can pick up a majority of leaves on my lawn. The Ego mower (LM2101, single blade model) I purchased previously could not. However, that ego mower did not come with a high-lift blade and I didn't feel like purchasing separately (mowers are expensive as is already). That may have made a bit of difference, but I don't think it would have been enough since the ego mower stays at a low rpm unless it feels resistance (Tall/dense grass). So picking up leaves on short-grass doesn't really work unless you can max out the rpm's like on the green works mower (turbo mode).

@@TechMadeEzy I just watched your unboxing video and noticed 2 things. One, you didn't have the blade on the bottom like mine. Two, I have the push model from home depot with the 5 ah battery (Model # MO60L516). That may be why :(. Pretty dumb they didn't include it with the self-propelled model. The only reason I can think of is that the high-lift blade decreases battery life due to extra resistance and in combination with self propel it would decrease life so much that consumers would give the mower negative reviews for battery life.

You seem to misunderstand what the "Mohawks" is. You do NOT get mohawks from a single pass. You get them when you overlap your previous pass with the right side of EGO mower. What you may get from a single pass is stranglers (and boy, EGO gets plenty of them) but not mohawks.
@OlegObukhov
@OlegObukhov 3 года назад
@Ray Johnson lol. It's not just "mohawks" that triggered me. He calls clamps of grass a "mulched grass" which makes me question his credibility even more. These clippings he calls a "mulched grass" are 1" long. How the f.. hell are they "mulched"?

Great review. Very fair on all 3 of them. I agree with ego result with a high lift blade for a mulch maintenance cut. The cut quality itself is great, but it leaves more larger mulch on the lawn. Pair the Ego gator blade with the Ego high lift as your 2 blades, ditch the flat top blade, and the 2 annoying bolts… You will get 1st place all categories on the ego. Though I never cut grass that tall. Fun but as you said, unrealistic. Thanks again for you time and skill.

In all fairness, the ego and Ryobi are dual blade mowers where the Greenworks is a single blade. Also the greenworks comes with a high lift blade, which you probably should have used when comparing it to dual blade systems where high lift blades are used, taking that into consideration I think the Greenworks would have been a clear winner in these tests.

I purchased both the ego and the Ryobi and returned the ego and kept the Ryobi. To be fair I did not purchase the dual blade ego. It was $750. I bought the $600 single blade. It does bag well. The engineering and build quality is second to none. It has real ball bearings and the wheels and pushes effortlessly and bags well. But it has no suction for one. You can roll it over dry leaves on the sidewalk and it will not pick them up. The other thing is it has a shorter blade than the deck is. The blade is an inch shorter than the deck width. You couple that with no suction and you have to majorly overlap every pass you make or you will leave one continuous strip between each pass. The Ryobi for $450 did all of those things better. So I did not feel that I needed to spend roughly $800 to get a mower that would do most of what the Ryobi would and normal cutting scenarios. My Ryobi has suction and good power and it came with two batteries that I can cut for more than an hour with. I wanted to like the ego and felt it was a better built machine but there were just too many design flaws and performance issues and the Ryobi did the job for a lot less money. Unfortunately the Ryobi is the number one selection here as far as I'm concerned.

I really enjoy your reviews but tell me, who allows their grass to get that long before mowing? My John Deer gas powered tractor would have a hard time going through that. But still…… I appreciate the testing. I’m going with Ryobi for a variety of reasons. Price, power, and we have a number of Ryobi tools where i can interchange the batteries. I also cut frequently enough where I wouldn’t anticipate some of the challenges here in your testing. Great job, thank you!

I don’t know what you mean by “maintenance cut.“ Do you mean cutting the grass with the mulching blade? The EGO is supposed to have as much power as a gas powered lawnmower. They have a mulching blade on that, so why does it not mulch worth a damn? It leaves a lot of long blades. I’m very disappointed, as I was leaning towards getting an EGO, plus my yard is Bermuda and I don’t know how well it will do in Bermuda. I think the design needs to be changed so it mulches better. It’s either a problem with the blade, or a problem with the frame. I think these lawnmowers are a few years away from being equivalent to a gas powered mower. I certainly don’t want to have to double cut my lawn every time I mow the lawn. There should be absolutely no mohawks in a normal lawn cut. I had a gas powered Snapper and you could not find the blades of grass after it mulches them, without getting down on your hands and knees and dig around. They’re probably less than an 8th inch long. That Snapper lawnmower is the best mower ever had. I currently have a Honda, gas powered and it’s no comparison. The third test was kind of ridiculous. I never let my grass get that long and I don’t think most people ever do. I know it’s just a test. Plus another thing is, you need to go the speed you would normally go when you mow your lawn. I don’t know if people go that slow. I also couldn’t deal with the choking that your experienced with the Ryobi and the Greenworks. That would drive me absolutely bonkers. Good review, though. Brooklyn wants to go out and eat that grass! 😳

@@TechMadeEzy I recently purchased the Greenworks 60v with the 2 4amp batteries and high lift blade included and this mower cuts beautifully. When you did the normal maintenance cut which would be 90% of the time Greenworks blew away the others in quality and that was with a single blade mulch blade not the high lift one they include now.
