Jaafar Abdul Karim travels to the land of the Pharaohs - Egypt. With its beautiful 700-kilometer coastline, Egypt is seen as the cradle of civilization. The pyramids at Giza are among the oldest man-made structures in the world.
This isn’t the first time DW presenter Jaafar Abdul Karim has been here. And as ever, he’s amazed by the stark contrasts that permeate this society: An exciting juxtaposition of conservative values and modernity affecting many areas of life including dating. He finds out more in Alexandria where he meets Shaima Ali, founder of the Muslim dating app "Hawaya".
Next on the itinerary is Ras El Bar in the Governorate of Damietta, where the mouth of the Nile meets the Mediterranean. The resort city is also notable for the fact that, since 2018, Manal Awad Mikhail has been the first Coptic Christian woman to lead a provincial administration in Egypt. Jaafar talks to her about bolstering women’s rights, the conflicts between Muslims and Christians and the country’s economic woes.
In Port Fouad, the presenter meets architect Mohamed Hasan. The two undertake a tour of the historical sites by ferry on the Suez Canal.
The roots of simsimiyya music lie in the harbor city of Port Said. Traditionally, the stringed instrument is only played by men. But at the Al Hawiyat Club, things are done differently. This is where Eman Hadoo and her friends founded the first female simsimiyya group.
The UNHCR says more than 250,000 refugees live in Egypt - many of them from Sudan. Jaafar Abdul Karim visits Amira Al Masry. In the year 2019, the 22-year-old launched the WANAS initiative, to support Sudanese children through art and theater workshops and ease their integration into Egyptian society.

It cannot be denied that the attractions of Egypt are unmatched in the world, or that the average Egyptian, like most Arabs, are friendly and hospitable. But what makes visiting Egypt such an intolerable experience, is the constant, unrelenting, ubiquitous scams and pestering of tourists, and how unconcerned the authorities are. Sadly I will never visit Egypt again, it's just too unpleasant.
@SalznPfeffer658
@SalznPfeffer658 Год назад
Exactly. this was almost a decade ago, but when I was there with husband, husband caught a stomach bug and spent 90% of our holiday in the hotel bathroom lol. So out of boredom, I ventured outside alone, covered up mind you, but that didn't stop the relentless harassment from street vendors, men following you etc, it was a terrifying experience. I was wearing pants and a shawl but they didn't care, they kept talking and wouldn't leave me alone so I lasted 3 hrs max before I ran back to the hotel. I never want to go back ever again, and if I had to, I'd bring my giant brother-in-law to shield me. The history is fantastic but the current culture, no thank you.
@njw6146
@njw6146 Год назад
@@SalznPfeffer658it's sad that you had such horrid experience, i assure you that does not reflect the culture in any way, you're dealing with scammers and hustlers that pray on tourists in mainly in the capital where poverty is a real issue. Normal day to day people are not scammers, or hustlers, this has nothing to do with tourism, it aims to destroy these preconceptions about the average person in egypt.
@Skybar23
@Skybar23 Год назад
Its hard to believe that Egyptian authorities haven't fixed this problem even in places like the airport. They must think tourist will look past all the unpleasant experiences and just be in awe of the pyramids and ancient tourist spots and that it will make up for the pestering. I remember I had my passport taken away at the check out at the airport and I was forced to pay US $40 just to have it handed back and then had to pay another $50 to have my carry on baggage returned. Had IT taken away just as I walked into the airport through the main entrance ...I wasnt even close to checking in but the "security" guards took my bag just to charge me to have it back. They like the create thier own jobs to make money

Delicious looking seafood. It was a short but good documentary because unlike most other videos about Egypt it didn't focus on the pyramids and tried to show the life of the people. Perhaps they need more vocational schools, that way they get both useful training and a chance to get a job almost immediately after school. It seems that seeing the sea awakens our desire for freedom. Part of the problem is that due to some geopolitical reasons, practically speaking, the Egyptians are not allowed to increase their trade volume with many West Asian countries. Perhaps as the world is becoming more multipolar, new opportunities will also arrive at the Egyptians doorstep. Hopefully the Egyptians will be successful in making all the positive changes for their land as peacefully as possible together and regardless of their religious or tribal affiliations or differences.

i did not like this documentary, as it paints a narrow-minded Westernized view of our customs. No, "marrying young and having many kids" is not what is expected of most women, except in some rural or impoverished areas. And although political prisoners maybe a world issue, for us it is not an issue because it is simply the price we pay for our political stability, and otherwise, like Dr Manal said, our economy will never change. So no, Christians are not 'oppressed' however that means either. I am tired of the West acting like we need their holy freedoms.
