The Valley of the Kings is a valley in Egypt, best known for containing the tombs of pharaohs and nobles, who were buried there during the New Kingdom. The valley is part of the Theban necropolis, and is located on the west bank of the Nile, opposite Luxor, and consists of the East and West valleys. The valley contains 63 tombs and chambers, which are mostly beautifully painted with scenes from the life of the pharaohs and ancient Egyptian religion. All the tombs, except one, were looted a long time ago.
From the end of the 18th century. The valley is a research site for Egyptologists and archaeologists. Today it is known for the tomb of Tutankhamun. In 1979, it became part of the World Heritage, along with the rest of the Theban necropolis.
