Some of the greatest treasures of Egyptian art have ended up in foreign countries, including the Rosetta Stone, which unlocked the secrets of Egyptian hieroglyphs. Now Egypt wants the Rosetta Stone back, if only for a visit.

Egypt should get it back. I know I'd admire it more if I saw it in a Egyptian museum. If I saw it in London, and it wasn't in Egypt, it just wouldn't feel as great. (Seeing an artifact in it's original home is what is better)

I love when I can go into a museum such as the ROM or British museum and have artifacts from different cultures all over the world. But I have to say that certain thing should belong in their country of origin. The Rosetta stone being one of them. Egypt should indeed get it back, it's an ill argument to say that England has ownership just because they stole it and translated it! I say give it back to Egypt. I will be super excited to have the chance to see it for the first time in Egypt!

I don't have to be Egyptian to know history. I also know that only the bottom portion of the stone is written in Grecian. The top half is Egyptian so its not all to do with Greece. This item has also been most instrumental understanding Egyptian hieroglyphs. Not just this item but a list of items that belong to Egypt need to be returned.

The rosetta stone must be in the place of the inventors of egyptology, that is, europe. Europeans decifered the hyrogliphs on the stone and by doing so we understand the ancient egyptians. Europeans were the ones who gave this piece value. Adding to this europeans were also the ones who discovered it.

Interesting fact: During World War I, bombing scares prompted British Museum officials to move the Rosetta Stone, along with other select artifacts, to a nearby Postal Tube station, situated 50 feet underground!

I agree with this man it's a disgrace that all these pieces should be all over the world, but ironically, if these things were not "stolen" in the past, today they would hardly be existing anymore, the common people would have used and ruined them due to daily use, we might find them in the brick and cement houses all over the place.

Those of you stating that the British stole this must not have watched the video. The FRENCH stole it from the Egyptians, the British beat the French in a battle and gained it as a spoil of war. It still belongs to the Egyptians, IMO, but the British did not steal this from the Egyptians. They are still keeping it, however. I wouldn't blame Egypt if they kept it when it was loaned to them.

@maynecuffs I disagree. I've been to Egypt twice - from north to south and east to west. They are the kindest most positive people you will ever meet. Not once did they ever say a word about how hard their lives are. Even in the Middle East Egyptians are known for their unique character. The land - both past and present - is breath taking.

I don't think Egypt should have EVERYTHING back (because that would make non-Egyptians learning about Egypt a bit harder)... but I do think that the Rosetta Stone should be returned (it was stolen from the people who stole it from Egypt (at minimum it should go to France)... and there are plenty of other Egyptian artifacts to be able to "compare and contrast cultures of the world".

These items should definitely return to their homes, but not until the regions they were "rescued" from can prove that for all of humanity they are not at risk of being destroyed. It was a crime that they were taken, but do recall that most artifacts were stolen from and sold out of their country by their own people. Things taken by most foreigners were extracted more carefully. Chances are if an area "robbed" is in ruin, it was a traiter of their own, not on outsider.

Europeans were the ones who gave this piece value and great importance (we are talking about understanding an entire civilization). The connection between modern Egypt and the civilisation that was is ephemeral. The modern Egyptian identity may choose to identify with what was there millenia ago, but that's no reason other nations should hand things over. At some point, these ancient ties stop resembling ownership.

The institutions and/or countries that have invested money into the careful excavation, research, preservation and displayingof the knowledge of such artifacts are those that deserve to keep the artifacts themselves. Too often, the country of origin is unstable. I would be scared for the artifacts to return to an area where they would be at risk of destruction. Look what happened to Afghanistan's Kabul museum in the 80s during Russia's invasion. The largest silk trade museum SACKED! What a shame

The Egyptians of today have very little connection with the Egyptians of Ancient times. The Stone was buried for thousands of years. The French found it... and lost it in war.. The British have no obligation to return it to Egypt. Patty Kim's argument with regard to Stonehenge is rediculous. Zahi Hawass arrogant attitude lacks any sympathy towards those who's hard work and grand research has brought to light the great gift from ancient times to modern times...The Rosettta Stone.

This is nothing new. HawASS has been demanding this for years. On the 1 hand, yes, the artifacts belong to Egypt. On the other, Egypt owes the archaeological world for saving it's artifacts from looters & thieves that Egypt has been plagued w/ for most of it's sovereign life as well as restoring & caring for the artifacts that would have undoubtedly been passed from collector to collector & probably disappeared.

In my opinion cultural artifacts don't belong to specific nations; they belong to the world. Therefore they should be kept in a nation where they will be safe. Britain is much safer for the artifacts than Egypt. There was a great museum in Bagdad until the US bombed the crap out of the neighborhood and Iraqis looted it. Egypt is not a safe and stable nation right now. The artifacts should be kept in the EU, USA, or Australia until Egypt can get their stuff together.
