For live I have used a TC Nova Delay for years and it's still hard to beat for ease of use and great sounds. I got the Timeline because of the Analogue dry through and it's great too. But recently got the Keeley Halo, but I'm still not convinced for live, because the footswitches are too close together and ended up going back to the TC it just sounds cleaner for live playing. I think the EHX sounds great, but I need the tap tempo feature. The volume knob is a great thing though. A great tool for the studio and if I had one, I would keep it at home.

I love so many delays... Maybe today I vote for the reliable, digital, still analog sounding "Benson Delay"! Don´t own one, but what I can hear from YT videos is the kind of voicing I like best, degrading to the mids instead to the lows. It also got modulation. Aaand! (drumroll): It´s still on the market, hence: obtainable!

I had the pleasure of repairing a Vintage 3 knob Memory Man for someone and then spent some time with it. Great vintage delay sounds indeed! Some instant album tones ;)

Nice job Leon, good review. I used that one 20 years ago, I did with it more than 100 live gigs in 5 years, than something happened and was not working properly anymore… Even if broken it was sold in one day 😮… I replaced it with a TC rack unit, but the sound wasn’t the same until I found the TC flasback dalay that has the Mamory man mode.

I had 2 of them in the 90s. Got rid of them when they quit working. They were amazing sounding pedals. I had an early reissue 59 Bassman and the Memorey Man. What a sound.

ahahah .....I still have around one from the early 80' ...with that old fashioned AC adaptor. In those days this was one of the greatest pedals indeed that a guitar or keyboard player had to look for. Well done.

I've had several DMM's over the years. It's crazy how expensive they are now. The DOD Rubberneck can totally cop the same vibe for a lot less money and has updated features like tap tempo and trails.

@@LeonTodd yeah I love the features on that one. The right footswitch will let the delay oscillate when held, there’s a mini pot to control how extreme you want to be. And with the tone knob you can brighten up or darken the repeats as much as needed. The repeats aren’t as bassy as the DMM’s, and that gives it a very tape echo vibe to my ears. The modulation is fantastic also.

had the echoplex started as a 'pedal' and not a tape machine, the delay sound would be considered the greatest ever imo. The way it shaves off the low end makes it the most musically useful delay there is.

Looking forward to hearing this up against the BRIG and Startlight DMM modes. I think I know which one I'll prefer but a comparison from you is always a good thing. The vibrato modulation circuit in the DMM is very hard to beat. As I told you, the frequency is 4.11Hz and the waveform is unique. Not quite triangle or sine.

I've tried that with the Fractal and wasn't able to get it to sound like the DMM but nothing can sound like the DMM, not even the multitudes of analog and digital modeling pedals that are trying to do exactly that. You can get very close but there's just something about the modulation and tone in the original DMM pedals that will always stand apart @@LeonTodd

The memory man 550-TT by ehx tends to use mn3008s and after an analogman impedance mod the delay sounds as well as the preamp sounds are really on par with the older unit you're showing. Although it doesn't have a ton of delay time on paper, it can be tapped into longer times (around a second or longer I think) and take on good-nasty clock noises from the bucket brigade chips. It lacks the tactile spaces out knobs and larger footprint that makes the DMM so fun and addictive but I'm telling you the sound quality is very very close and between the cost and reliability factors I think a no brainer. Only issue is that the 550-TT is pretty ugly looking. Everyone goes for the 1100-TT especially with the fabled Tap Tempo graphic since it has the Japanese mn3005s - but the 550-TT sounds incredible, and unless you need the cleaner long delay times, it'll probably sound even better than the 1100-TT.

I have the deluxe memory boy but don't use it anymore, ironically it was too feature-laden to easily dial in the sounds I look for, switched to an old 3-knob dod fx-90 which is much more intuitive...wouldn't mind one of these big box memory man's tho, I've heard them in action and they don't disappoint

@@LeonTodd Yeah, the Boss DM101 is near the top of my list of "someday" pedals. A friend gave me his DD-500 for my birthday several years ago, and it helps keep GAS at bay.

@@cobyleebrooks I got a Boss ME5 and it was just so much better. I read interviews where people often have 3 or 4 memory man's and one really sparkles, the others are ok. However the clone of it on my HX Stomp is really good. Of course the original only had a short delay

Not even close to being the best. Maybe one of the best analog chip single delay ones. I have The Halo and SDE3000. I would like to have a Volente. A best pedal has to be a dual delay, It also needs to do analog, tape, and digital delay and have modulation. Everything this day and time is overhyped. My Axe FX FM9 will do all of these. The H90 also has a great Tape Delay and other delays. One trick ponies doesn't work for me at a premium price.
