The longwave mast on Eiðar fell! The third tallest structure in the whole of Iceland was brought down just before noon on Wednesday, 1st of March. By that, the decades-long history of the long-wave tower in the Eastern parts of the country, came to an end.
RÚV's longwave mast that used to carry 207 kHz, fell shortly before noon on Wednesday, 1st of March 2023 during a live coverage broadcast. Now, the country's third tallest structure has disappeared. The era of long-wave broadcasting is coming to an end as FM will replace it.
The Eiðar longwave transmitter has been serving its purpose for a quarter of a century. Once 220 meters high, and operating on the powerful long wave frequency of 207 kHz, RÚV has broadcast daily down into the deepest valleys and out into the mountains. But nowadays, only few have radios that receive AM, and the system is no longer considered suitable for security broadcasts.
Longwave transmissions will continue for a while on 189 kHz from Hellissandur at Gufuskálar in Western Iceland - the country's tallest structure at 412 metres - but this will ultimately close, too, and then the FM system will completely be taken over the role of safety broadcasts.

The recording of the destruction must be considered as a historical time document. Hereby, there was a "best before date" put upon LW broadcasting in Iceland!
