What a wonderful opera singer...and what a very versatile singer. I just listened to Farrell singing jazz and blues...and came here to listen to her as she is best known, as an opera singer. She was one singer who could do it all!

Yes! If there is enough musicality and the right technique you can sing modern and opera;-) her Gershwin songs are wonderful...

I had never heard of Mrs Farrell, then one afternoon in the car I heard her sing Verdi. I was stupefied by her voice, so unbelievably beautiful, solid, clear and stirring, natural - I cried because of so much purity and sincerity, so much giving! Thank you, thank you so much.

I would say, without hesitation, Eileen Farrell had no technical issues. In fact, she was such a skilled technician that she is literally the ONE classical singer that recorded jazz and standards as impressively and appealingly as opera. It's true that she doesn't have the world renown of Maria Callas or Renata Tebaldi, but she hosted her own radio program in the early 1940s for five years where she performed both classical and popular tunes. She did not begin her stage career in opera until her mid 30s, and she was married to a policeman and lived on Staten Island with their two children. It's clear her desire to balance home life with celebrity is why less people are familiar with her (although she did perform internationally, she did that less than most major opera stars). NPR noted, "She possessed one of the largest and most radiant operatic voices of the 20th century." The Daily Telegraph stated that she "was one of the finest American sopranos of the 20th century; she had a voice of magnificent proportions which she used with both acumen and artistry in a wide variety of roles." She has been described as having a voice "like some unparalleled phenomenon of nature. She is to singers what Niagara is to waterfalls." ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1TS1Yi80H-s.html
