In this video I interview Einar Selvik from Wardruna. The band Wardruna makes use of the Scandinavian past in their music, particularly the Viking Age and Iron Age, and Nordic mythology. They are well known for their interpretations of the runes into music, and from their remake of the Old Norse mythological poem Völuspá.

Wardruna music is best enjoyed under the open sky, in the rain, with some wind. I can absolutely relate to that. The second time I saw Wardruna live was at Midgardsblot 2016, right by the Gildehallen and the forest, in the pouring rain. It was not a concert, it was a ritual.

I love so much his ingenious way of perceiving past, nature and creation. His sharp analytical way of exploring and performing mythology and artistic ways as a whole. Nothing is scattered in his way of thinking and exploring. Practically, not reviving, but feeling the past, even as a fragment, as a source of creating of something that is still alive and existing. “Art shouldn’t be comfortable””. Every ingenious artist knows that. Complexities of process as.digging for truth in any form, at any level. One of the best interviews I’ve heard, especially in the sense of ideas. Genuine, indeed.

This is a great interview. How refreshing to see the interviewer asking relevant questions and nor interrupting the person they are speaking with. Just great. Einar Selvik and Wardruna are brilliant. Their music resonates with so many of us and really does allow us to ‘time travel’ and get a feeling of our ancestors and what they might have felt and experienced as seasons and events happened. Now, when I stand of the banks of the river on which the Vikings sailed into Maldon, Essex (and the river estuary from the North Sea and a small Island on which i was born) I actually feel something which I had not appreciated before…fear and fascination but an odd connection to people from the past. Einar’s music takes me to this ‘presence’. Just totally brilliant. ❤️

As someone of half Nordic descent, from Norway to Finland (An American mutt). Wardruna fills void I've been missing, my mother tells me of our Norwegian grandmother anytime something she remembers comes to mind. My father is of Swedish, Danish and Finnish descent. He was a hardcore dude back in the day, he's 63 now, and his body is breaking now. Love what they are doing though, and Einar, the descendant of Bragi, fight me!

I just realised this morning that I hasn't been listening to the "come and gone" type of music since I found Aurora Aksnes. And with her i found Silja Sol, Wardruna, Heilung, Danheim and some other nordic music and musicians. I never followed the crowd anyway but it is changed many things in my life and helped me to get even closer to who i really am inside. If that makes sense.

Excellent interview indeed! Einar has opened up a "forgotten" past! Growing up in the uk, i've always had this feeling something was missing in life. ive always felt a connection to the world but not in the right way i suppose. id never heard of vikings tv show or wardruna at all. in fact i was a major game of thrones fan. i was always watching/reading medieval-ish stuff to try and find that missing piece. anyways...2 years ago i heard this sound on the tv. the frequency was so familiar yet id never heard it before, after hearing the whole of voluspa i realised that kind of music was the missing piece of my life. i then watched vikings and was completely immersed. looking back it wasn't so much the tv show (awesome i know) but the music and culture that changed my way of life. my family were shocked how quickly things changed. they must have tought i was a nutter lol. that was until i done a dna test. was tottally shocked to find out my whole family come from all over norway and scotland/wales. It soon shut them up. now our whole family is different. we are much closer than ever before. we celebrate the old traditions properly (best we can) makes a huge difference in life knowing where you come from, and more importantly, knowing who you trully are!

As non European...I think world must admire European style life, cultural idea ....no hate to other cultures....
@kheidal
@kheidal 5 лет назад
I can see why the various cultures of old Europe is admired by many from other parts of the world, and maybe especially Scandinavian culture of old with the Norsemen, because it's very "exotic". Just like how many cultures around the world are exotic and exciting for us up here in Scandinavia, since we're so used to the Norsemen and the Norse mythology, hehe. I'm glad it's something that has been kept alive, and renewed in a way, so more people learn about it... but at the same time... I'm sad knowing there are so many cultures of old that has been forgotten.. all around the world.
@oluff1153
@oluff1153 5 лет назад
We get taught few lessons on Norse Mythology here in Norway, because our own government thinks it’s not worth learning about. Norse mythology is ‘irrelevant’ in their eyes.
@oluff1153
@oluff1153 5 лет назад
Actually, it’s quite ironic, Americans have taught us Scandinavians to love our own heritage more. Norwegians, I am only including Norwegians because I only know of our major opinions, but many Norwegians are not very proud of their ancestry and merely know the basic details of the Viking age of Scandinavia.
@oluff1153
@oluff1153 5 лет назад
Unfortunately today we have people that would call a person that likes Germanic history and Pagan ways to be a racist nazi. Although, for once, few Norwegians are starting to be very proud of our ancestry, just like anyone should of their own lineage.

The man is preserving his heritage which up until recently depicted his people with horns on their heads. No easy task. I build boats and boats need different rigging and sails for different waters.....cutting a new sail or trying a Chinese junk rig for instance are new horizons on a ship ,but necessary to make successful voyages . Maintain traditions of the past without fossilizing the future is key to preserving any culture as it precedes where we find ourselves in the modern world .....horns and all!!

I believe it is a calling. I've experienced so many weird/unexplainable things in the past few years that lead me to believe that fate might not be just superstition.
@christopherrowley7506
@christopherrowley7506 5 лет назад
The explainable things are also part of fate, and in my opinion, that is really what fate is all about: cause and affect are unavoidable. It's like in the sagas when someone is faced with deciding to avenge a wrongdoing that was refused to be compensated. They know that it will cause a feud that could last more than a generation, but they also know that they will look weak if they do nothing (and that that could ruin their entire family's position in society). And so they go off to do X,Y or Z even though someone prophesied L, M, and N bad things will happen if they do. A common example is the protagonist's wife or another person prophesies that if they go to fight in this duel, they will die, and yet they go to fight anyway. In my mind fate has nothing to do with "Wow, isn't this so paranormal and spooky?! This coincidence is just too much!" and a lot more to do with "This is my lot in life and I'll accept whatever consequences come with fulfilling my duties. Come what may!"
