Wow Alex I didn't expect this game to be longer than 10 hours due to the price and it being a prequel. I was very surprised when I seen 32 hours later lol
Even from the video, I can tell this game has charm and character to spare. It also feels like a great pallette cleanser between bigger, more epic adventures.
thanks you for this review. wishlisted this n the "main" game since i come to appreciate pixelated/sprite in games for these recent years n its with 3d background which may seem superficial, it is so smart how each placement add more depth to it (like vanillaware's 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim). imma get it in the near future as i have loads of backlog to battle with right now 😆
Thanks for the review. I'm excited for Hundred Heroes and wasn't really sure about this game. Unfortunately this review didn't really push me in any direction on whether to try it out or not. I'll give it some more thought.
Another thing to consider is that the developer has said that some stuff you do in this game will transfer over to Hundred Heroes (nothing specified yet, maybe cosmetics or something). So if you're excited about that game, there is some benefit to this one.

Its on Game pass now, that's why I am here. Finished Sea of Stars and was hoping to play Chained Echoes next but sadly it has left the service. Saw this and downloaded it. Hope its worth, I have no history with the ip. I do know the two previous games are being re released and the next game are all coming out next year.
This was great, thanks Alex! I want to check this out myself but got way too many games at the moment to give it priority. If nothing else it seems like a decent starter before the main dish in 100 Heroes next year.
I'm curious af to see your opinions on this. I'm a backer for the main game, and I have hope the devs will do a good job. Not sure if I should let my opinion be influenced by this since another studio made it, but I'll see after i finish watching
Just got the platinum trophy for ps5. I’m a long time suikoden fan, so I’m probably a little biased with my positive take on it. I enjoyed the combat immensely.
22 hours on the play clock. The only trophy that took some effort was getting all the resources. Turns out I had to catch all 3 types of fish at each fishing spot as well as all 3 kinds of meat in each of the 5 areas.
I knew pretty much nothing about this outside of maybe seeing a splash screen advertisement for it on the Xbox store or PSN, so this was all new to me. Sounds pretty exciting! The main character looks fun, and I love the town upgrading thing too. Sounds great!
I loved this game so much. It scratches the same itch as Ys. Are there any other 2d ARPGs where you collect items in dungeons in order to build up your town/homebase?
Today i finished the game. I think the early hours were a slog. After some upgrades and story bits it got a little better but I'm only finishing it because my stamp completion compulsion set in.
Great review. I don't believe the combat delays that you mentioned are necessarily a negative. It's normal for bigger characters to have more of a delay because well they weigh more and have a bigger weapon lol. Seems like normal physics.
Theoretically what you say makes sense. But side scrollers don’t do that because it makes it feel sluggish. It might not look like it, but once you get control of Garoo you’ll immediately notice it.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising doesn't explain the link combat as well as it probably could have, but I found it nearly perfect (apart from status effects slowing down the flow a tad too much) If you hit an enemy with any character and then press toward that enemy and attack with another character, you can bridge whatever gap there was, and/or avoid attacks by kind of flashing through them. So I would switch to Garoo (if something was above but a little out of CJ's reach) or Isha (if the enemy was keeping me at bay with an elemental attack or was the type to rush me once I got close), and once the first few magic or big sword hits connected, switch back and forth between the other characters and just wail on the enemy, usually so much so that it couldn't do much back to me. And then switch to Isha or CJ to dodge out of there. Which granted may have made combat too easy for some people, but heck, I just got done 1000/1000 GSing Elden Ring, I needed something that felt faster and less punishing. LOVE Rising and I hope it gets more fans, and that Hundred Heroes, hopefully, is leagues better than this wonderful little game I love.

I really like the graphic aspect of the game and it's super cool to see all the love they put into it, but something that I definitely don't like and it's hard not to notice are the Sprites, The backgrounds are beautiful so I don't understand why the Sprites are so... Flat? They look like they came from a low budget phone game, I understand it was a game with Precisely less budget but seriously it is a disappointment that the Sprites are like this , even so I am very excited to try it thanks for the review Alex !!!!✨✨✨💫
There have been many people that have said the same thing that I feel as though many of you read someone else’s opinion and are just repeating it. And even then, no one can explain exactly why the sprites feel flat, only to point out that the developer makes mobile games, like it was some form of insult. Mobile games have improved dramatically over the years. And rabbit and bear signed off on this look at some point: The devs weren’t left to their own devices. I’m trying to understand everyone’s viewpoint on the sprite work, but I’m getting the same things over and over with no additional clarification 🤷🏻♀️
@@BacklogBattle well you're right about that 🤔 I think it's because of the animation they have moving the limbs separately as if they were paper dolls with not very fluid movements, At least that's what it seems to me 😅

I am very surprised it took you 32 hours to beat this game. I really like it myself, but I got through it, doing all availible sidequests in 15 hours and had gotten all possible achievements in 18 and I didn't really rush it either.
@@BacklogBattle I downloaded it, and played the first couple of missions on the SteamDeck. I was able to run the game with no issues. The game runs smoothly at 60FPS, and required no tinkering!
Good to hear people are enjoying this game despite the critical impression it's leaving around the journalism community. It's unfortunate the animation is so lacking, but the biggest gripe I have with the visuals is how mediocre characters and environments look. Average looking dungeons and maps is par for the course in the Suikoden series, it's part of its charm..but the series always had memorable character designs that stuck out in the game world and in your memory. I still wanna play this though, maybe when 2023 draws closer..
I’ve had lots of people tell me they’re enjoying it. When all is said and done, there’s a good game hidden behind all the critical complaints out there.
I'm sad the combat isn't super slick, but I was expecting that after Taylor's preview video on it a couple months ago. Still trying it out on Game Pass though.
Pre-loaded from Gamepass thinking we were getting the main game already. I’m a little disappointed to find out that is not the case but will give it a go regardless. I need to pay more attention!
Just randomly stumbled across this game and had to check out a review. Immediately went to this channel. You don't disappoint! Anyways, it's too bad they went the route of the side characters not being as effective as the main character for general gameplay. That delay sounds not fun. It's never a good thing to force the player to play a specific way when at the same time you give them a taste of multiple choices they *could've* had. A full playthrough with Garoo (omg kangaroo man is named Garoo, really!?) would've been pretty cool but that sounds like it'd be very, very tedious. All that said, everything else about this looks pretty up my alley. On the fence still, but I might just grab this one once my OWN backlog is carved down a bit (and trust me, it's huge). I tried playing as Garoo for an hour or so just to see if I could figure out how to play him properly, but wind up writing what I did because of how he functions. Sometimes it makes me wonder what devs think, especially with that design choice, where there’s been literally decades of side scrolling games and they think that’s a good idea
I have heard a lot of negative things about this game and you did point them as well, but seem to have been able to look past them. Would the following be sort of accurate? : Game is mind numbingly easy and there is never any real sense of challenge? The movement is slow, janky and clumsy feeling, nearly as if it was a super budget cash grab title? Like those 2010-2016 side scrolling mobile games that sold for $2-$6 on ios/android store? NPCs are placed in such a way that it looks like they were all placed using a template in that they are even,y spaced out in an almost methodical sterile and artificial seeming way? Enemies while not ugly to look at, tend to be very generic and lacking anything about them that makes them even slightly interesting aside from as a piece of art. So no interesting attack patterns or abilities that require even the slightest bit of thinking to deal with them. The quests are of the : go get X amount of Y or go kill X amount of Y etc… I could kind of overlook one maybe 2 of these things, but if the game is mediocre in every way aside from art design and some decent music….
Thanks for asking to clarify. Here’s some clarifications: Re: Difficulty, it is easy, especially if you do the side quests. If you don’t, you could essentially make things more difficult. Apparently some people are able to finish the game faster than me, but I can only speak from my experience. Re: Movement - if you are ok with the way that I play the game, which is to use CJ primarily and Garoo and Aisha as secondaries, you can get around these weird design decisions. I’ve never played mobile games at that price point in this genre, so I can’t comment on that. As far as NPC placement, I don’t think I covered that in my review and frankly, that sounds like nitpicking. I can say the same thing with plenty of side scrollers with NPCs that have been categorically considered better. In terms of attack patterns, there are varieties. They’re not meaningless. They’re just quite easy to figure out. Like using Garoo attacking a shielded lizard knight will disarm the shield. But this goes along with the ease in difficulty. The quests are all fetch quests, but I suppose that’s something that I felt fit what I wanted, which was fairly easy gameplay that I can sink my attention into. I’ve no doubt you’ve seen me talk about Elden Ring on the channel, and this game is the complete opposite of that. While not every game can be great, I do believe that there are specific games that do cater to us depending on what we need. Hope this helps!

My biggest worry is if the challenge is lacking, quests are lacking, controls are lacking, I am likely going to end up not finishing the game or getting very far. Sometimes I love a janky budget title, other times, nope haha. An example of a game I took a chance on bit never got far is : Exist Archive. All in all, that game just is lacking something to hook me. $12 down the drain lol. Guess I will subscribe now.
@@IMRavnos I’ll always say if it’s available on Game Pass, the worst thing that can happen is that you find another game you want to play. The same money you’d spend on a disappointing game can go to something else worthwhile!
This was recently featured as a free trial for NSO subscribers. And I must say I was very pleasantly surprised by the game. The gameplay is very simple, CJ is by far the character with the best mobility to the point where both Isha and Garoo feel cumbersome to use. But the presentation is charming and I really like the atmosphere. The characters are all adorable.
I actually was introduced to this game first before 100 heroes. I was initially excited to purchase at launch, but as reviews started coming out there are a few problems I've been seeing. First, people say the combat is... ok. The second being that the story sounds like a lot of simple fetch quests. Also, the devs have been silent on *if* 100 heroes will be on switch. Don't get me wrong, I still want to play it. But 505 has a habit of putting games on sale about a month after launch. I think I'll wait till then to get it. If I like it, I'll be sure to recommend it. By the way, thank you for your review
A few months late, but having come at this from the other side (saw the main game before this was made and released), it's been well stated that it will be coming out on every platform. Plus the most recent TGS trailer for it reconfirmed that.
I’m actually not sure if we’re seeing the same thing. I noticed that when viewing the video on mobile, some parts of the video would drop in quality even though I have it set to 1080p. Otherwise, the gameplay should be smooth. RU-vid has been messing around with their streaming quality as of the last week, just based off my experience. On the PS5 RU-vid app, they wanted me to play Lofigirl in 4K, for example lol

I think Rob is right in that the game having a huge cast wouldn't have allowed for voice acting to begin with due to its size. But I can still be disappointed in its omission.
The writing was very good and much fun. Loose ends were tied up and everything made sense. They showed concern when you would expect and acted like you would expect a real person to. Very impressed with the game honestly and it real gives me hope for the future of the series as a whole.
I wanted to like this game since I’m a fan of the Suikoden series but the way they did the animation just felt lazy. I would buy it full price if the animation resembles the old school Castlevania SotN or Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. This will be a purchase once it is one sale.
Thanks for the comment! I think the difference in animation quality is due to the difference in budget and how much the game costs. It’s very difficult to remember now, but SOTN and Lenneth were full priced games at $50. Rising only costs $15. And even then, I don’t think the animation quality is as bad as people make it out to be. Sure, it’s not rotoscoped like SOTN, but it’s not crudely animated like South Park either.
And Valkyrie Profile and Indivisible and so many others. I personally dislike bringing up other games to compare other games - it devalues what they’re trying to do individually
