i just learned a sweet trick for cracking that crank pulley bolt, use the serpentine belt, loop it over the alternator, then pinch it on itself so the v grooves catch together and pinch on themselves as you tun it counter clockwise. Ruins the belt, but thats like $15.. Works like a charm.

Those dam bolts on Subaru's worst design, that cam gear is a nightmare to do. My last result a long time ago was to weld and bolt on top of it. Main reason I stripped the hell out of it. Hello from Subaru Colorado Some noobs also install Lock-tight on those bolts lol

Just subscribed. Doing 3 jobs on sti . Rebuilding oem psp , replacing valve cover gaskets, sparkplug seals, halve moon cam seals and replacing all the o rings on the oil cooler setup above the oil filter due to leak. Sti is apain compared to my 98 honda prelude

Been wondering if a cam seal replacement can be done with engine in car. I have a 2006 subaru sti ej257 engine. Great video , much thanks

Acetylene directly next to a rubber O-ring for the AVCs 😬

👍 I understand your concern. Good thing modern o-rings are oil and heat resistant. Luckily I only had to heat up the bolt and not for very long.

The seal we're recessed but you installed them flush ! Did it work ????? I came to this vid to see which depth you'd install them. If you put them flush its much easier but im scared they'll leak since the proper subaru tool drives them quite deeper :/
@atvsanonymous

Worked like a charm. The important thing is to get the seals seated evenly all the way around.

I followed you steps but when I removed the timing best the 2 cranks on both side shifted about an inch apart each. What should I do at this point. Just align them back up before installing the belt?
@atvsanonymous
@atvsanonymous 3 года назад
When you go to reinstall the belt use a cam gear holding tool or have a buddy help you while installing the belt. It is under tension when it is in the correct spot. The gears always wants to slip away from that spot.
@NsXy

I also had to heat up that can gear bolt. I noticed there was some sort of gasket or o ring right around the bolt. Do you this the heat ruined it and the cam gear should be replaced?
@atvsanonymous
@atvsanonymous 3 года назад
A new o-ring should be pretty easy to find. Replace the cam gear if it got ruined

I just found out I have a leaking cam seal in my Subaru Legacy. Is this a common problem for Subaru’s?
@atvsanonymous
@atvsanonymous 2 года назад
Not sure if it's more common with Subarus, but most seals will eventually leak with time and milage.

Instead of using that Allen wrench with a big ass piece of square pipe why don’t you find a socket that fits that Allen wrench put it on the end where that big pipe is and put a long extension in it locking preferably if you have one
@atvsanonymous

After finishing the repair, I found an impact Allen socket on Amazon. Wish I had it while I was making the video.😁

are the special tools you mentioned compatible with subarus from 2017?
@atvsanonymous

Go here and see if you can match a tool to your engine. (You may have to remove the timing covers first to take a look. www.company23.com/subarutools?sort=p.model&order=ASC

@@atvsanonymous Thanks for the tool recommendation, I bought the ones I need. can you help me find the part number for the seals you have swapped. my car is a Subaru Legacy 2017 2.5l DOHC H4 16v. my engine has timing chains and not pulleys. I can't find the proper fitting part on the Subaru parts website.

Why did the cam seals need to be replaced? Were they leaking oil? Just wondering why you replaced them.
@atvsanonymous
@atvsanonymous Год назад
Yes, They were leaking. The passenger side was the worst. Oil was dripping onto the exhaust causing smoke when the engine was hot.

@@atvsanonymous Got the same problem on my 2008 WRX. Was there oil on your timing belt? Were you able to reuse the timing belt?
@atvsanonymous
@atvsanonymous Год назад
No oil on the timing belt. But I replaced the belt since it had to come off anyway.

Yeah, Sorry. Sometimes hard to get a good angle of the work being done. If you get a screw driver behind One side of it, you can pry up on it and it pops right out.

What about the exhaust cam seals? Those are tight on the camshaft and wouldn’t want to scratch the surface

Easier just to put the car in 5th gear then pull the e-brake then take your breaker bar break it loose
@atvsanonymous

I hear ya. Many people have stripped the Allen bolts on these and I wanted to reduce the break-away torque to reduce the chance of stripping the Allen head.
@evergreenpsyche

@@atvsanonymous she's talking about the crank pulley or harmonic balancer as you called it, I dont think it has an Allen bolt? Or maybe i'm mistaken I thought it was the cam sprocket allen bolts that have a tendency to strip. Company23 tool looks really great for that. I think i'll have to do mine shortly...breaking open the timing cover tomorrow to check and then prolly be ordering that tool The trick Melissa mentioned is a good one for the crank pulley but obv only works in a stick shift

@@atvsanonymous Wait are you saying that using this method to break loose the crank pulley bolt could transfer some of the break away torque to the cam sprocket bolts?? 🤔🤔🤔 j/w now cuz I haven't heard that before
