In this video Dr. Najeeb will help you Master ECG Interpretation. The difference between Normal vs Abnormal ECG readings along with ECG Leads & their Placements. Let's Master the basics of Electrocardiography with Dr. Najeeb Lectures.
ECG is a graphical representation of electrical activity of the heart. Electrical activity begins in myocardial cells; unstimulated myocardial cells have an electrical potential difference with their environment; it’s known as RESTING MEMBRANE POTENTIAL (RMP); it is always electronegative on the inside.
Appropriate stimulation of a myocardial cell causes the RMP to become less negative i.e. rise towards zero; until it reaches the THRESHOLD POTENTIAL; which is the potential at which voltage-gated Na channels open up and Action Potential ensues.
ACTION POTENTIAL: Na+ ions rush in when voltage-gated Na+ channels open; Na+ begins to neutralize the negative RMP, potential moves towards electro positivity, negative polarity is lost; eventually reaching and surpassing zero; membrane is said to be DEPOLARISED.
DEPOLARISATION CURRENT: Depolarization-sensitive Ca+ and K+ channels open; efflux of K+ and influx of Ca+ occurs in accordance with their concentration gradients.; for brief duration cations are lost as K+ and gained as Ca+; balancing each other out; so, no net change in potential occurs.
But with time; Ca+ channels begin to close down and more and more K+ channels begin to open.
