Finally made it out to the Franklin Mountains tin mines. After about a 3.2 mile hike to the base of the mountains you will come across the mines. There are 2 mines here. One is located behind the mill ruins and other larger one is about a 1/4 mile north further up the trail. They are both accessible from the outside and are both a lot of fun. Mine #1 is way bigger than #2.
This is also a odd style of mining where the vein is followed directly down which is why you will see the entire stope mined about 4 stories tall.
The #1 mine also contains the standard tunnels that enter the base of the mountain and continue for about 500 feet which are also followed by 2 ventilation shafts for this longer tunnel.
The Mine was founded in 1909 and was commissioned for tin ore processing. In 1915 mine was officially closed and had never turned a profit. During its 6 years of service the mine and mill only produced a total of 16,000 pounds of tin which in todays dollar is roughly 208,000 dollars. This amount is no where near enough to sustain a mining operation.
