Very interesting video. I've lived in Raval for 5 years and sure it is rough, there are a lot of drugs and some shit happening, but the rough charm is something unique that attracts tourists and foreigners moving to Barcelona. It's pretty gentrified, used to be way worse from my understanding. Many of these streets that looks sketchy are housing tons of hipster kids, skaters and people with decent amount of money. It's grim, but personally I loved it and never felt unsafe, although you always have to keep your guard up still. They test you and if you act like a tourist, you are an easy target.

I just got back from Barcelona, go there often as my daughter lives there. That’s 50 minutes of my life I won’t get back watching that. I’ve walked through the Arab quarter often, never had a problem. It has more of a reputation as being dangerous at night. During the day just petty stuff which can happen in any European City. Few simple rules, don’t put your wallet in your back pocket, in fact I take out one credit card and a few Euro. Don’t put anything valuable in a back pack, in a crowded place they will slice it open. Don’t film walking down the street with a camera or phone, spot the tourist! If you are lost walk like you know where you are going. If you want to consult you phone for directions, find a seat, sit down and pretend you are playing on your phone. Don’t walk around with ya phone in your hand they will snatch it or leave it on a table at a cafe etc. They also love to get you when you are trying to buy a subway ticket at a machine. You can see the suss people usually when you come out of the subway, especially around Las Rambla and El Espana. I have been down that ally with the prostitutes, nobody hassles you. As for the graffiti , every shutter on every shop in Barcelona is the same. Every ally and every street in Barcelona has those narrow alleyways, not just the Arab quarter. The locals were warning you that you stick out like dogs balls the way you were walking around. Final rule don’t engage with anyone with paint faces, dressed as characters or offer you anything especially when it’s supposed to be free. Don’t trust anyone. I’m a 65 year old skinny white blonde guy and never have a problem, stick out like dogs balls down there. You blend in, you were never going to have much trouble, only the camera was drawing attention to yourself.

I am a 55kg woman and am not afraid to walk around Raval at night. Tourists are targets for robbery because small scale theft is a misdemeanor; not a crime. Otherwise someone might just want to sell you something, or help you find a club to smoke weed or get laid. Generally not out to hurt anybody. Lots of immigrants in Raval; doesn't mean they are dangerous people.

If you really lived in Barcelon you would know that this video is pure bullshit. Raval, ohh, hell, what a bullshit. You can walk through Raval at 3am and the chances of something happening to you are not one bit higher than, say, in the Gothic Quarter or the Ramblas, Plaza Mayor and surrounding areas. Either his local advisors were having fun with him, or he thinks his youtube audience is stupid enough to buy this nonsense,

I lived in Raval and I walked around at any hour of the night and never had any problems. I am a foreigner and I never saw anybody being robbed in Raval as it is not a tourist destination. I never considered Raval to be dangerous at all. It is an immigrant neighborhood in the center of the city. However, I did see women getting their purses snatched several times in El Gotico district which is a very nice area that all the tourists go to. There are much worse neighborhoods in Barcelona outside the city center.

Was in Barcelona last month. My girlfriend and I walked through this area so many times, including at 2-3am. I learned after being in Barcelona for a month that as long as you don’t look robbable you got no worries. Anytime we went to a worse area I’d just glance at anyone walking towards or behind us and kept my head on the swivel. Any beggars or scammers come immediately tell them no and walk away. They are persistent as fuck, anyone who didn’t immediately shoo them away was followed.

The name 'Raval' originates from the Hispanic-Arabic word arrabád, meaning a suburb on the city's outskirts, usually home to the poor and marginalised. The neighbourhood dates back to the 14th century, when Barcelona was in the grip of bubonic plague as it swept through Europe. ‘Barcelona is built like a colonial city, where the city of whites is strictly separated from the city of the indigenous people. In the city of the ”whites” the streets are broad, lofty, well-paved, often decorated with flowers and the apartment blocks are well arranged so that they do not shade each other. On the other hand, in the city of the ‘indigenous’ people, the streets are narrow like ravines’ HE Kaminski (1936)

I'm a local, and I lived in Redfern, Sydney, NSW for a year back in 2006 one of the most dangerous hoods in the city along with Kings Cross and all I can say is those were quieter than some hoods in Barcelona. You've been lucky filming around with that smartphone, a bunch of Moroccan kids could have smuggled you easily in no time at all. El Raval can be really tough.

I’ve been going to Barcelona since 2000. Back then you had to be careful of pickpockets in Las Ramblas but I regularly stayed in and around El Raval and never had a problem walking right through the heart of that quarter. The place took a turn for the worse around 2015 when there was a large influx of immigrants living in the area and the few prostitutes and dealers who before would be in the alleys multiplied ten fold and and began to openly deal and solicit on Las Ramblas the most famous Barcelona walking area. The police do literally nothing though in truth there probably isn’t enough of them and the courts probably don’t back them. The Gothic quarter on the other side of Las Ramblas used to be the bohemian but very scruffy area where you’d more likely be more guarded where you walked but now it’s completely turned round. I was last there in 2021 and had three female work colleagues with me who had never been to Barcelona before. I took them everywhere but not into Raval and at all times I was very conscious of having them in my sight and not far away. Once walking down Las Ramblas with my wife a dealer tried to sell me something which I just said no to but then he said something derogatory about my wife. He clearly never expected me to speak fluent Spanish but he got a real shock when I stopped and confronted him shouting loudly in Spanish that I was going to break his face. He quickly scuttled away. I wouldn’t have done in deep in El Raval nowadays. It’s such a shame but as shown in this video this area is a North African and South/Central American immigrant shithole.

20:30 - yes. I’m a journalist based in Europe and the Arabic/Muslim areas are indeed not only the most dangerous but the most hostile against the natives (spaniards in Spain, parisians in Paris). Ironic but it’s different than early 20th century immigration where populations wanted to assimilate to the local culture and contribute. Sadly, the arabs and Muslims in particular want nothing to do with local culture and norms. Entitlement and indoctrination that has resulted in no-go zones all across Europe due to hostility from this community in particular.

This is hilarious! Was just there last week. Cab driver dropped my wife and I off at the first square you mentioned. We asked him to drop us in the gothic quarter. We were ready for a drink after a long flight so we went to the first bar we saw in the square. We had luggage sized backpacks and they looked at us a little sideways. Sat down in the square to drink and definitely saw people glancing as if we didn’t belong. Everyone else knew each other. I wouldn’t say it felt dangerous. But I definitely made sure to move in a way that would show them I’ll handle business if they bothered me. Good video!
@robertbes1122
@robertbes1122 11 месяцев назад
Well, for starts, El Raval is not the Gothic Quarter. If by "the first square you mention", you're talking about la "plaça de la catedral" or "plaça nova" (which would make sense, as that is, in fact, the gothic quarter), I can assure you 100000% that it was only your perception. People 100% don't all know each other there. It's like saying everyone in trafalgar square knows each other. And that goes for most squares in all of Barcelona's city center. You really need to go away from the center to go into neighborhoods where people actually know each other.

As someone who is 6ft 5 and 200lbs, I can completely recognise what he says about how he looks determines how the different levels of criminality respond to him. I've been able to travel the world relatively unscathed and be immersed in experiences most people would feel threatened in simply because the street gangs don't want to mess with you... HOWEVER that DOES change the further up the food chain you go. The people higher up in these gangs see you as a threat to their respect / standing in their gang. Loving this guy though... His humility is refreshing!

I would definitely consider your appearance to be an advantage there! I've been to three notoriously dangerous (or at least shady) places: Darlinghurst Rd. in Sydney, which I understand has been "cleaned up" (bummer!), the Tenderloin District in San Francisco (I was a social worker) and an area of downtown Nairobi that I accidentally walked through. It's interesting how your demeanor automatically changes to match the environment. Some people aren't able to do that, so they need to always stay out of sketchy places. Some aren't even able to sense when they're in a bad area.

I've lived in Barcelona most of my life, and I've worked at El Raval "La Boqueria" Market specifically and studied at the EOI (Language School), I wouldn't say El Raval is the most dangerous, that's La Mina from my perspective. I've grown up having my school shot from a madman in the building in front of it and seeing crowns of flowers at pretty much every lamplight, marking a murder. It's kinda chilled out a bit, but yup, I'd say La Mina and El Raval are up for discussion.

I've lived in Raval for 26 years, I go down these streets every day and many nights. To me it seems ridiculous to present it as a dangerous ghetto. You go round filming people without consent, including the sex workers collective on their street, and someone will say something (BTW: you could have saved the sexist comment). Next time, go to the neighbourhood of big time thieves, people who've got rich ripping off people, locals and tourists alike. It's called Pedrables, up towards the mountain. As someone already commented, in Raval most people treat others with respect (tourists don't always, sadly).

Spanian, I liked this episode - much like most people, I'm sure. I think you should get an interpreter and head to areas like this and try to talk to the locals in the hood. People watch you because you’ve lived this life, if you could connect with the hoods you’re going through it would be much deeper… also you might be able to get an invite into the locals houses and hear their stories. Completly agree beacause it’s not what you see in this video. In the good flats the rents are expensive, in the bad one cheap. In that hood cultures are very mixed. But Raval is not that dangerous if you are smart, but if you go here to visit, don’t enter to raval at night, and don’t go with all your jewlery. Barcelona is very besutifull, it has beach and mountain, and whatever you want. Be clean, don’t be loud, and try typical catalan food, as fricandó, escudella, caragols, and more, don’t pick the rambla’s restaurants, because it are expensive, and food it’s very bad.

Back then i was a Registed Nurse carrying A$10.000 worth of morphine and other meds for palliative care use around the neighborhood. Us nurses didn't wear uniforms, but when we walked those streets people would give us way. It was like the parting of the Red Sea: everyone knew who we were and no one was stupid enough to mug us, we helped the elderly, the sick and dying, the AIDS patients, the tuberculosis ones... there is honor amongst thieves, and one does not shit in one,s own nest. I got my 1st tattoo in Carrer Nou de la Rambla. I still visit my friends in several bars in there and I miss the piss smelling narrow streets with everything I,ve got. Been Barcelona many times, El Raval is not dangerous, it's just a very unlucky place for tourists who aren't street smart. I've been in some weird stair ways in buildings to buy weed etc, never had a problem. I've had friends who have been pickpocketed/robbed, but they were either drunk or dumb enough to put their bags down and not keep an eye out. These petty theives cover most of the center, however there is more around El Raval with it covering one of the main streets etc. Best thing to do is - Don't look like a tourist (advice for any country), and don't talk to randomers that approach you.

El Raval is seedy and a bit rough in some parts with some crime, but nowhere near as bad as he makes it out to be. It's a really characterful "barrio" (not "hood") and mostly safe to walk around during the day. I lived there for 15 years and never had any problems, even walking home late at night as so many people were about. You have to keep your wits about you and take care of your belongings, the same as in many parts of Barcelona where tourists are a target for thieves. And there are drug dealers and prostitutes, but they leave you alone if you don't bother them. In this video it was clearly filmed when most shops were shut so there aren't so many people going about their daily business. Despite the outside appearance of buildings and narrow streets, many flats have been done up - you just have to look on a property website to see how nice some of them are. I lived in a flat on fourth floor with a narrow, shabby staircase and no lift, but once inside the flat it was lovely and light. I was less keen on being serenaded by Filipino neighbours on their karaoke every weekend though :) It's interesting to revisit the area in the video, despite the many adverts which interrupt it.
