Brilliant. The "weekend interview series" is already classic. This one in particular is shaping up to be the most accessible exposition of the mind of Andrew Jones I am personally aware of. Good work Steve.

Wonderful Steve ! I've spent a lot of time delving into speaker design during a period recovering from surgery when I couldn't do much else but surf the Internet. Having an engineering background , I've nearly always built my own speakers to established designs. I know the process to develop a good speaker is immensely complex and expensive. I'm really looking forward to the next parts !

Brilliant, this is already a classic. Especially the way Andrew describe the AES society back in UK. You don’t get further by excessively hiding your work from others, you advance by working together with your competitors as good friends... but there will be some trade secrets of course ... collective learning makes us collectively much stronger :-) Even more Andrew, you seem to be a really likeable guy :-)

I would be interested in what Andrew Jones, and his colleagues, think about Alex and his room full of compression, Alex's zeal for compression, Alex's obsession with compression.
@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac

Engineers compress, and compress more because their clients ask them to.
@NoEgg4u
@NoEgg4u 5 лет назад
@@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac Perhaps some of those clients watch your channel. It would be beneficial to have influential people (yourself, Andrew Jones, etc) also speak about the topic. Even given the reason you mention, above... that should not negate folks like Andrew Jones from speaking about the issue. It seems like we hear only one side of the issue, that ever gets voiced in videos. I speak out (with the keyboard). But only a fraction of your 60K subscribers are reading my comments -- and I have little to no clout with them. We need the makers and movers in the audio industry to be heard, in videos, just as Alex was heard. Compression will never go away, and could get worse, if top names do not speak up. If even a handful of artists listen, it is a step in the right direction. I see no downside to hearing both sides. It is the American way! By the way, where can I get my hands on a new Stereophile T-shirt? I used to get one with each subscription. But that was a long time ago. Cheers!
@NoEgg4u
@NoEgg4u 5 лет назад
One more point I would like to address: I often hear that compression is used, at the request of the clients / artists. Yet, I have never heard that from an artist. I hear it from engineers, and from folks that say that the artists say so (hearsay). Until I hear or see actual evidence, establishing that artists are really saying this, and doing so for reasons other than the engineer advised them as such, then I will keep the jury out on the root cause for the abusive use of compression.
@melgross
@melgross 5 лет назад
Compression, and limiting, is used because radio stations want to play louder, people listen, with earbuds, in subways and other noisy environments. And the more highly compressed popular music is, the better it sells. It isn’t a matter of convincing producers (who have the power in the recording/mixing room) or anyone else in the musical/technical end of the business. It’s convincing management that sales won’t suffer with less compression. That’s a very hard sell.
@NoEgg4u
@NoEgg4u 5 лет назад
@@melgross There is truth to that. However: 1) There are engineers that love compression. Steve interviewed an engineer named Alex. Alex stated that he loves compression (that "he" -- him personally -- loves it). Alex is not using compression with radio and ear buds in mind. He is using it with "Alex" in mind. 2) Folks that love a song are forced to buy it, whether or not it is compressed. There are no alternatives. Either you buy what the record label puts out, or you do not buy it. There is no other version of the song. You have one, and only one, choice to get that song that you love. So I find it difficult to believe that anyone would say "This sounds too real (because of no compression), too dynamic, too open, too spacious, so I am not going to buy it". Conversely, there are likely countless examples of songs that people, who seek out quality, will not purchase, because of the compression. Uncompressed songs sound better. So it stands to reason that they would sell better. Granted, there are some folks that prefer crummy sound from a cheap radio. Those folks, I imagine, probably are not going to buy anything, and if they were inclined to buy a song, I cannot imagine that they give a flick about compressed vs. non compressed. So people will still buy it. And not for nothing, the uncompressed version will sound better, even with ear buds. This is why I believe that #1, above, is the primary and almost exclusive reason for why the world is fed compression. We have children, in adult bodies, at the engineering controls.

Andrew Davis. His place really is cluttered like he moved from a much larger space and couldn’t part with any possessions. It looks like a hoarders cache 👀 maybe it’s due to him getting so much free stuff from manufacturers, for a start, looks like he’s got like a hundred headphones, so yeah he’s a hoarder for sure but the place looks clean really just untidy, Ps sorry for the ramble; just bored 😅 *Perhaps you could suggest he use all that Paetreon money to hire a maid or house boy😂 (not knowing his inclinations).

AJ was doing a great job before he unleashed the ELAC Adante AF61 on us. That has to be one of the most unpleasant speakers I've ever listened to. The high end is TERRIBLE because of it's stridency. A lot of people found the bass lacking but that was just poor QC in China, if you remove the drivers and seal the compartments the bass is very good. I don't know what the problem is but the only way to solve the high frequency problem is to pad down the high end using an L pad.

@dell177
@dell177 5 лет назад
I have a 3.3 cu ft NHT sub that deals with anything at the very low end. I'm driving the speakers with a pair of PS Audio M700 monoblocks with a Rogue RP5 tube preamp. This is the same electronics that drove my Chane Arx5's and those had a good high end, for a small tower the bass was pretty good but can't compare to the low end on the AF61's. BTW both speakers sound the same so it's not just a defect in one speaker. Does anybody know at what SN the redesigned tweeters were put in these speakers? It could be I have a a pair with the old tweeters in them? I have some 10W power resistors on order to build an L pad so I can drop the tweeter level by a few db's, we'll see if that tames things down.
