This physics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into elasticity and hooke's law. The basic idea behind hooke's law is that the change in length of a stretching or compressing an object is proportional to the force applied up to the proportional limit. The elastic limit is the point up to which an object can return to its natural state if the external force is removed. Beyond the elastic region lies the plastic region where an object will not return to its natural length if the external force is removed but it experiences permanent deformation. If the force passes the breaking point, the object will snap in two. The ultimate strength is maximum force that an object can withstand without breaking in two. Stress is the ratio of force and area. Stress is the external pressure applied to an object where as strain is the material's response to that stress. Strain is the ratio between the change in length of the object and its original length. The elastic modulus or young's modulus is the ratio between stress and strain. This video provides the equations and formulas needed to perform calculations associated with young's modulus /elastic modulus, stress, and strain.

Good evening I have a question what is tge meaning of Re Because se gad a question involving that but have no idea about that. This the question:assignment Suppose that the effort in a tie rod is 89.20x104N when the load to be lifted dis maximum. The tie rod is a still cable with elastic limit"" Re=580N/m2 "" and its young modulus E=2x104N/m2 . Consider a safety coefficient of 0.25 and a length of 3m  Determine the section S and the diameter D of the cable such that the tie rod can resist safely.  NB. Diameter available in the market in mm 50-60-80- 85-90-95-100-105-110-115-120-125-130-135-140-145-150-155- 160-165-170-175-180  What then will be the change in length of the cable?

Can we say that the Young Modulus is the amount of force needed to stretch 1m^2 of a material to twice its size? Because if A = 1m^2 and deltaL = L0 (meaning that the material has got to twice its original size), then F = E. If the material stays in the proportional limit during the stretch, I think this is safe to say. What do you guys think?

Between C and D does that mean the object has deformed or can it deform in AB as well?
@ContaminatedWorld

AB(elastic deformation) and CD(plastic deformation) plastic deformation means the material can not get to original position upon removal of applied load it will may fracture if the applied load goes on increasing

Hi. I have a doubt in Hooke's law. It States that within elastic limit stress is directly proportional to strain. But within elastic limit there is no strain BCOS there is no change in dimensions. Then how we will calculate modulus of elasticity?
@ranonymous27
@ranonymous27 2 года назад
There are changes in dimensions and hence there is strain within the elastic limit, but due to the object being in the elastic region, the deformation (change in shape) is not permanent, but does exist as long as the force (load) is applied. Elastic limit is the highest stress a material can withstand before permanent deformation, it's not the only time strain is present. This therefore allows you to calculate the elastic modulus. Hope this makes sense and you find this useful : )

I have a problem, I would calculate the movement about a plastic lever. For example a plastic snap hook. I know the formula that Y = c * (E * (L * L)/H) where y is the movement, c is a constant (physical form about the lever), E is the secant modulus (stress/strain), L is the lenght of the hook, H is the thickness of the hook The main problem is finding E in the material datasheet! Because inside them you find Yield Stress in MPa and Yield Strain in %. Stress at break in MPa and Strain at break in %. So I can't calculate E with these datas

Hey guys I have a doubt if you know it plese comment below In this video it is said that the higher the are ,the higher stress we need to change its area but what if there is a iron cube with less are and a spunch cube with higher area ,so does it mean that iron cube will take less force ro compress as compare to spunch cube.Well I don't think so,but still if you have some idea please comment 🙏🙏🙏
