Sit back, relax and enjoy an elbil road trip through stunning landscapes from my holiday in the electric vehicle capital of the world, Norway. We already know that Norway's cities are well equipped for EVs, but is there a similar abundance of charging infrastructure out in the wilderness, and how will an EV cope with Norway's challenging terrain?
With special thanks to Bjørn Nyland for donating some footage for this episode.

Lovely video and stunning trip, you're right about the charge rate of the Soul EV, I think it peaks around 70kW, we noticed ours charges noticeably faster on the chargers we used at the Irish motorway stations than the DBT units in the UK.

Elbil means EV, (Bensin- or Diesel-) or just bil means ICE 😜 Thank you for a great video of our western lands and fjords. 👍

Absolutely wonderful video - fantastic scenery and Norway is now on my bucket list for such a visit & Elbil hire. Of course, you clearly also took the weather from Scotland with you, Euan ! Closer to home, will you be attending Dundee's Xmas EV parade on Saturday ?

Amazing scenery and that roundabout in the tunnel. Not seen one of those before. Quite a feat is an understatement. Great vid by the way.

This video is wonderful, and I shall be watching it again. What it shares with many others, however, is great variety in sound level so, even for someone like me with battery assisted ears, a hand on the remote is a constant necessity. Even the BBC do this, and I'm wondering why.

Thanks for the feedback, Peter. I did try to sort out the sound levels for this video, but clearly didn't quite get the balance right, sorry! I shall continue to tweak the sound for the next video so that the volume is more uniform throughout.

Love these EV travelogues. Now I don't have to spend 1billion euros visiting Norway! Although an EV-based holiday is pretty damn tempting... Hmmm.

Thank you! Norway is 100% worth the money, and exploring its countryside with an EV is a must.

The Soul can rapid charge at 100 kws and we will have to wait until next year when Polar starts rolling them out in the UK.

The 'other' Bjorn has noted that older Soul EVs seem to suffer from quite severe battery degradation, so might be an issue now when buying used from this era..

Excellent video. Epic. Did you have to stick to main routes though? Although the charging network looks amazing so as you say can't see a reason for full EV adoption. I assume they were all working and reliable. Is it worth filming a video on the state andreliability of the UK charging network and what needs to be improved?

Thank you! We planned our route before we knew what EV we were going to be given as our hire car, so we based our journey around the range of a 24 kWh Nissan LEAF. As it transpired, the Soul that we were given had considerably more range than expected. It would have been nice if Hertz had told us the exact spec of our elbil well in advance, but then again it's normal for hire car companies to group cars in broad categories and not actually tell you what you'll get until you collect the car. We could have strayed further out into the sticks if we liked, but: 1) Rapid chargers are almost everywhere in Norway so we'd end up bumping into a mini hub eventually 2) Everything that we wanted to see on day 1 was along the main-ish routes, with day 2's itinerary being considerably more out in the wilderness 3) We made the mistake of booking our hotel in Bergen before deciding to do our elbil road trip, meaning that we had to double back to Bergen every evening rather than driving further afield and staying in different hotels every night. I'd definitely do that next time. For reviews of charging networks in the UK, check out The PlugSeeker - I wouldn't want to encroach upon his turf ;) ru-vid.com/show-UCsKPCiJSt118nfTRYsR0NZA The charging network situation in Scotland is quite different: the national ChargePlace Scotland network uses a broad mix of charge point suppliers. eVolt have installed the majority of CPS' hardware and have an excellent reputation amongst Scottish EV drivers for fixing issues in record time, but Siemens and ABB units have been known to be left broken for weeks or months at a time; I know from my experience in Norway that ABB could be so much better than they have been in Scotland (as alluded to in this video), but they have been let down by some of the installation subcontractors that they have chosen. DBT units (as used by Ecotricity) are thankfully few and far between, but where they do exist, they are inevitably broken. Chargemaster's Ultracharger isn't eligible for CPS funding because it can't simultaneously charge cars on AC and DC. If you want to see the best charging infrastructure in the UK, check out Dundee's three epic EV charging hubs.

I save 1000NOK a week driving an 24kwh Leaf, just in fuel and toll roads alone. But I’ve only taken it on a long trip once before. 310km up to our cabin. This summer I’m going to triple that distance, you can’t afford driving an ICE car around Norway anymore.

Thanks! So that's why No Tail Pipe RU-vidr is emigrating. Sound. And the charging infrastructure isn't similar in the UK why? For the same reason that the investment in roads, tunnels and electric ferries isn't a priority. Lack of strategic planning. Lack of strategic care.

Great video, but you didn't mention in the costs whether you had to pay a premium for hiring an elbil.
@PlugLifeTelevision
@PlugLifeTelevision 5 лет назад
Good point! I've just checked the latest prices for you. Hertz Bergen would charge £130.84 to hire category C5 compact EV (LEAF, Soul or similar) for 48 hours. A manual transmission category C compact ICE (VW Golf or similar) would cost £119.49, and an automatic category I compact ICE (Toyota Auris or similar) would cost £135.08. So the elbil, which can be driven by anyone with a driving license, is cheaper than the equivalent automatic ICE, and comfortably saves enough on fuel alone to recoup the extra £5.68 per day to hire vs an equivalent size of manual ICE.

@@PlugLifeTelevision Thanks. Good to know that it's not a premium proposition. Would be interested in seeing a survey of EV car hire around Europe.

In my opinion if your gonna go on a road trip best option is still gas, but if you wanna experience elbil in Norway and take it a bit slower I can understand why

I laughed at the title card re shaky video. Stabilizing gimbals eliminate this problem. Here's a video comparing two of the most popular. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QGaheHtY7qU.html (Other manufacturers products may also be available).
