Any newcomers don't be discouraged. This is also my first Souls game and it definitely gets easier the more you play and explore and remember if you can't beat the boss you're trying to beat you can always leave and level up then go back to fight to make it easier!
See it's this shit right here that I love seeing this. gamers being nice and encouraging to other gamers you don't see that enough man just people putting others down and discouraging them from trying to get better at games because they wanna gatekeep like what they play will lose it's coolness factor if they teach others to be better but none of that here which is especially rare when it comes to soul games!!! Hahaha
Nah this game sucks. I should’nt have to RU-vid everything when playing a game . Sick of people telling t me not to get discouraged when I can’t even walk around without dying a million times . What about that is fun ? WhT about YouTubing how to every little basic thing fun ? Gameplay is purposely sluggish and terrible jjst to make it more difficult . Anybody who thinks this game is good is lying to themselves . Yea it looks really cool. Just about it though . I’ve been gaming for 20+ years . This is an over complicated mess . I’m literally just sitting here staring at the screen not knowing what to do or where to go . Can’t move becuase I’ll probably get killed by jjst about anything that moves . They could’ve atleast made the gameplay fun . But nope let’s just over complicate it and make it as unnatural as possible for gamers . Fuck this shitty game
I can’t thank you enough, this is my first souls game ever and it’s been SUPER overwhelming trying to grasp everything. I’ve watch many videos but none really addressed being a total noob like myself. This video was perfect, can’t wait for the combat one!
just throw yourself into the catacombs and you’ll start to get better, after awhile it just clicks - another thing blocking in this game can be helpful if you have a good shield
@@vortexremix678animationtra7 same man. This is my first souls game and even beat a boss or more than 2 mobs at the time is a challenge. This tutorial really helps people like us! haha
This is, by far, the most useful Elden Ring content I've seen. Vast majority of coverage seems to be from the perspective of people who are experts at these kind of games and have pumped hundreds of hours into them. Thanks for doing this for people like me who have never played one!
Lol yeah like the videos telling you how to get the best early gear for your build, but you need to be at least a level 80+ to even get to the places or kill the major boss that drops it... Shit I have been killing smaller things over and over again grinding just to level up a bit so I can take a damn hit without dying. It doesn't help that my brain is still telling my hands I'm still playing the game I was last week, so I keep drinking my damn flasks while trying to attack...I'm not sure I like this controller configuration. I really wish that similar games would use similar controller configurations so that switching between games would be much smoother and easier for people to understand if they play that style of game. And boy don't let corporate know how much money they could make by selling game saves in a store... 😆
@@whispersinthedark88it depends lol I got a nice staff in a high level area while at level 15 I just rode past enemies I couldn’t handle made sure to find the grace points on my way so I wouldn’t get stranded too far from my rune if I died. When I got to the place where the staff was I just rode in and got the hell out of dodge by teleporting back to where I’m at in the story lol
@almostagod I got screwed by ign, I was looking for something and realized that I had accidentally fucked up a side quest then I used their guide to "fix" it...never trust ign. I was also playing dexterity which was kinda ass early on, maybe I should have tried one of their op builds 🤣 But I figured it out eventually
My 1st to, game is so addictive. I really don't know what the hell I'm doing but still having a great time playing. Great vid cleared up some questions I had
Quick tip for getting staffs, bows, other weapons early on. As soon as you go to the roundtable the first time you can find a statue in the back area of the left hand hallway (not the one with the blacksmith) that sells ALL the starter weapons for every other class you didnt choose (bows, staffs, seals, axes, daggers, shields, etc.). It also sells some armor and other minor items. Hugely beneficial especially for finding a bow very early. Also, the Golden runes you pick up (i.e. the ones you find on the ground in skulls, dropped by enemies, or laying throughout the world) these are not added to your rune count UNTIL you use them BUT wait until you are at a site of grace or merchant to use them when youre in need of some extra runes to purchase items or reach the amount needed for next level up. Try not to use them all if you dont need to. They can be a great emergency stash if you die before recollecting your dropped runes. (Edit: Staffs not available at twins but all other weapons def are)
@@fcold9402 Yeah didn't realize they were called the husk twins til the other day but yeah those are the ones. You can also give them bells and other key items throughout the game to add to their inventory to buy. Like unlimited #1 & 2 smithing & sombering smithing stones, unlimited 1 & 2 grave worts, etc. Yeah i think they had a staff but maybe not, i know they sell the seal though
@@benefitsboi7232 Oh really, yeah they can give you a BUNCH more runes on top of what you earn by defeating enemies. You can sell them to merchants also and i think they sell for the same amount of runes that youd get if you used it.
@@rbgilbert11 Yeah i checked, no staff but i do have the other item for what amounts to cleric spells. But i am apparently an "apprentice" to some mage lady except she only sells spells so i have no focus to use them. I have checked all the merchants i have found but no joy. If i ever start a new character i will make sure to pick one with the staff.
One thing I noticed was that while on the map, you can press a button (L1 on PS) to show areas where summoning (multiplayer status) is possible. Seems to work for any unfogged part of the map even without a map fragment, and it shows them in areas (like a cave) you haven't discovered yet; basically pointing out there is something there worth exploring.
This helped way more than you know. Yes more please. 60 hours into the game...I didn't know how to summon the wolves, that I was supposed to get my sword leveled up past +3, and your advice helped me out even more. This is my first game like this.
10 hours in and I’m really enjoying it. It does make me feel lost sometimes, but as long as you travel the world and find Sites of grace, and fighting any boss or mini bosses you see in any order you want, then I think you’re doing ok.
Very nice video. If this helps people as well. You have a quick pouch you can use by holding down triangle and then pressing one of the D buttons. You can find it to the top right after pressing the start button. I find it usefull for summons and buffs. Hope it helps 👍
it seems no seasoned souls players figured the pouch, as it is never mentioned in any video while this is actually the best place for summons (Torrent and spirits)
This is so incredibly useful that I hope it gets incorporated in a future video. Being able to select Torrent with a simple button combo is so much better than having to scroll through your items.
I wish this tip had been in this video. I'm a veteran souls player, but a person in chat had to tell me about it. Super useful for summoning ash, using the spy glass, lantern, torrent, etc. Only four can be accessed quickly with button combinations.
This video will be getting watched a lot when I'm playing this. I didn't even know that you could improve the map. Played this for 3 hours so far and I have struggled a lot with this. Would very much like a video on combat, I am especially dreadful at that.
You will get it, don't give up. Find yourself a shield with 100 Physical negation, go to the first little camp with the soldiers, lure them out one by one if possible, and play with patience, practice your Guard Counter (block one attack and press R2) just practice that for awhile until you keep doing it over and over again smoothly.
Yeah, I've never played Souls, so EVERYTHING about this game is pretty new to me. This video is helpful af lol Still loving the game, even though my Bandit takes a fucking beating lol
@@jasonlarocque2761 I am also not an expert but my vague understanding is that the letters mean how well the weapon damange scales based on your attribute level. Like S is the best, then comes A to E. In general, when you add points to, for example, dexterity, the weapon becomes better. The letter determines how much better it becomes, so if the weapon has a "good" letter in dexterity, the more better it becomes upon each added point in dexterity attribute. Something like that.
@@akuskus That is correct; better scaling in a stat means that having more of that attribute will give you greater damage with that weapon, so using weapons that scale well to your highest attribute (or putting levels into the attribute the weapon you want scales to) is recommended. Scaling can also be improved by improving the weapon, but that's a whole other confusing thing.
Honestly a great guide. I found it late so I found this all out the hard way, but man this is so well done. I never comment, but it was really warranted here. The only thing I would add is some mention of how to use the pouch, since that can be a really handy tool to access commonly-used items.
Never played a fromsoft game before, though my brother was always a fan. Took a 90$ gamble on the game, and despite knowing nothing about it and absolutely sucking at the game, I find it extremely rewarding. Going from dying to wolves like a newb to felling my first boss has given me a feeling inside I havent felt from a video game in a LONG time. I still have a lot to learn, but i will use this video for reference when running into simple troubles.
I completed Dark Souls 1 and 2 without ever understanding weapon scaling. 😂 Even with online guides it was just gibberish to me, so I mastered my starting weapon both times, fully levelled it and 'got good'. It's accidentally hilarious that I got to Elden Ring without knowing what that stuff meant.
that is excellent skill, I must say. those are like bragging rights runs with the simplest equipments. well done. in souls games, timing is everything. 'gitting good' is essentially mastering the timing of dodge and parry and you can finish the entire games. personally I could pull off parries often, but reliably - and that road leads to frustrations
@Edward Hernandez Both are right, and I tested both out just now; you either can run straight to the Gatefront SoG or it has to be 3 overland SoG and the third one doesn't need to be the Gatefront one.
Thank you yet again Aoife! As previously mentioned I’m not a beginner in FromSoft games, and even already have 10 hours in Elden Ring… and still I learned a few new things in this video. I couldn’t find anything when I started playing about the little blue “tombstone” symbol on the left of my screen, but thanks to you I now know it means that I can summon. Sincerely, thank you Aoife ❤️ Now if we could just get a play through of Elden Ring with you and Johnny, I could die happy.
Me, a super newbie to souls games, have almost reached lvl 40 but most of the points you are talking about here, are absolutely new (and helpful!!) - thank you so much for this video!
Defiantly earned a sub! This is my first souls game. I’m not kidding when I say I tried fighting the first boss just outside the castle at a minimum of 25 times. Finally my jelly fish put in some good work and poisoned him just enough so I could stay back and then make the final blow. R.I.P Rogier…. I really tried my best.
Like you say early in the video… “ 1st game I’ve played From Software” So I wanted to come in and say thank you. Before this guide, I almost stopped playing the game. I found myself too lost. After your vid….I’m excited to create a new char s& a new play through. Thanks yall ❤️✌️
Just a heads up, Arcane does more in Elden Ring than previous games and more than just item find. It boosts dragon magic and also boosts status effects (bleeding, poison, rot etc etc)
Wish I could like this video twice 👊🏻💪🏻 I started the game this week with no previous “souls games” experience 🥵 and it’s been a journey to say the least 😂🤣✌🏻
Stay tuned for the third and final video in the series: "Elden Ring for arrow77", where Aoife dumbs it down even more, uses sock puppets with her explanations, and ends every sentence with "you dumbass".
With each new Elden Ring video on Eurogamer, you are convincing me to buy my very first From game. I’m grateful for all the tip videos for when I do eventually succumb...
This was super handy! I've really enjoyed the opening parts of the game but the stats and equipment systems can be a little inscrutable and this helps really break it down (and not end up worrying if I've 'wasted' a level up point)
Great video. Would like to add that most of the pop-up tutorials get added to the Info tab of your inventory. Can't remember what it said about dodging? Just go to the Info tab, find the entry "About Dodging" and press the key/button on screen to see the details. Count me in for a video on combat, as this is my first Souls game (watching Eurogamer and the Oxbox/Oxtra teams convinced me to try), so I'll take all the help I can get.
I think I was just extremely lucky to get most of these off the bat. I like to repeat things before moving on, so that might have helped not missing out on something. This is so much better than their other games.
I often struggle more in these games with managing the UI, and memorizing which items do what. The fighting is also really difficult, but often knowing how to get the most out of the items you have makes the difference. This is the most helpful “how to” video I’ve seen so far for this!
Put the spectral steed whistle in your item pouch instead, the much easier to access in a pinch when you need a quick getaway instead of having to scroll through quick items!! 👌
I can definitely see how someone who’s never played a FromSoftware “Souls” game before not knowing a lot of the stuff that I (or any other souls veteran) absolutely take for granted & just know when playing Elden Ring or any new FromSoftware game
This is EXACTLY what I did. I played for an hour and was so confused. Wasn’t until I saw a gameplay vid that I realised what I did. This video is so helpful!
I want to thank you for all of the new bloods and veterans for whom you made this very well structured and informative overview/guide :) I'm late to the party, just started my first elden ring run, been on Fromsoft since I grabbed Demon's Souls from a friends pile of games for PS3, man I missed these games.. edit: 15hrs into an int build (going int since Demon's) and I totally didnt know about the memory stones :'D ty
This is the first FromSoftware game I haven't bounced off immediately due to not vibing with the atmosphere and the trappings of the game. I'm obsessed this time and it's led me back to Sekiro which I'm also having a blast with. What a masterpiece.
I'll be completely honest, this is my first from software game... and iv gone in blind, iv actually enjoyed learning, without watching tips. Iv died... a lot... let's just say that. But it's all part of the fun of it. I'm absolutely addicted. I'm at godrick atm, not quite strong enough to take him on yet, but searching the castle... getting killed still every now and again 😂
THANK YOU!!!!!! This is my first souls game, and I've loved it so far...but there is a very steep learning curve! Some stuff I knew, but most I didn't...can't wait to play again tonight and use the information you gave in the video!!
Finally, someone to hold my hand and just figure out the basics so I can enjoy the game a whole lot more. Thank you so much, I thoroughly enjoyed your video. Please do a tutorial on the mechanics of upgrading please! I am afraid to upgrade anything for fear of upgrading something only to not be able to upgrade something better and wasting mats. Thanks again for your time!
I watched this, and then 10 minutes later, I beat my first mini boss on first try without dying. Actually, two of them. The two Demi Human Chiefs in the Coastal Cave. Your video made the weight system very easy to understand, and I'm pretty sure that's why I was successful. Im a FS rookie but gaming & rpg veteran. The systems in ER aren't new, they are just obscured a little.
Oh, nice! I chose Wretch (purposely) and was being stubborn (partly naive) with using extra help or changing up my approaches for those fuckers, but I think I got it the 2nd or 3rd time coming back with less gear holes or just better gear, the lone wolves ashes, and a functioning offline golden summon or something. Still between like level 1-6, I think. I didn't know what the summon was exactly besides help I haven't seen again but dude didn't follow me in the second-ish try first rodeo. Played a little DSR but couldn't get past the clunky feel and - I guess, now that I think about it - the abundance of corridors. Gaming has been a hobby of mine a good 80% of my life. Not much RPG history, though. Anyways, cheers to a fellow Tarnished!
I needed this, saving it for reference. I'm deff new, this is my first souls game and have no idea what I'm doing just enjoy exploring, deff gets easier the more I play, this breakdown has given great incite into what I should be doing and how, thank you.
There's so much to this game and it's fucking stupid, I wish I was able to just jump in and play. This game is legitimately made for maiden-less players.
Just started playing this a month ago and now I'm here to figure out some shit , best advice for starters is farming your runes , what I mean by that is find a saving point next to a group of enemies or area where you can easily slay everyone , go back to saving point and pass time so you recover and the enemies respawn , rinse and repeat till you level up
Excellent stuff, many thanks Aoife! Yes please to a Combat for Dummies follow-up, and possibly a very general guide for which areas to try at different stages? I've played a few hours, but still feel heavily under-prepared for any bosses, and I'm unsure what to do next...
I’d recommend exploring most of Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula before venturing into Stormveil Castle. I got to about level 30 before entering Stormveil, and that seemed to work. Good luck!
Start with some of the mini-bosses in the caves in Limgrave - similar kind of flow to the battle but they're easier with smaller health bars. As you play the game you'll get a feel for when you're underlevelled, but a general tip is that the minor enemies you come across in an area shouldn't give you much trouble when you fight them one by one. (Mobs are always a bad time.)
Wow this guide is simply one of the most detailed, comprehensive and clear guide you can ever dream about for a such complex game such as Elden Ring ! 🙏🏻
I've played every souls game and I still get confused as shit and have no idea where I'm going most of the time so guides like this is what helps me climb over whatever wall I'm stuck in thank you :)
Thanks, Aoife! Brilliantly explained and super detailed without feeling (too) overwhelming! I actually feel like I may actually be able to tackle my first FromSoft game armed with this. Combat vid would be AWESOME too!
Here's a tip that came in clutch for me so many times... the AOW barrage, for bows. DOES use fp to fire, but isn't REQUIRED to use the skill... after your fp runs out, you 100% can still use it
Thank you. I’ve been getting very frustrated because the last time I played a game like this was fable two. As someone who pretty much only played call of duty for the past years I’m feeling very lost
OMG! Finally found a video that is helpful. I am new to the souls genre and was really hard for me to understand the game and its mechanics and different features it offer. I have watched many videos that instructs us what to do rather than explain the feature. This video helps us to play with our own style,, as you explain all the features which helps us to decide how to go about the game. Thank you for this
My sister has been playing for a year and she’s level 40 and just found the first boss. And she won’t look up anything cuz that’s cheating. Shes never finishing
Thank you so much for making this. I have never played a souls game before this and it’s been so overwhelming trying to figure out how to play this game. I bought the special edition with the dlc and haven’t even played longer than 2 hours. Watching this video makes me feel like I will actually have a chance at understanding the game.
This is my first Fromsoft game, I'm loving it so far, I started as a wretch to roleplay my own destiny of becoming the Elden Lord. So far as of writing I'm 3 and a half hours in at level 19 going around exploring Limgrave, I've died 3 times so far but this video is the best I've seen for begginers, none of this OP early stuff ruins the experience (personal opinion) as a started to be strength and dexterity I'm definatly going to put points into intelligence for spells thank you for this video.
Welcome to the fold sir! Remember if you're struggling with a boss go out into the world and level yourself up a bit more and dont forget to upgrade your weapon, its a must! Good luck.
THANK YOU THANK YOUUU! I hate how other videos rely heavily on the player already knowing the basics of Souls type games and don't actually explain the basics, they go on rambling about their preferences and such and how ER compares to other souls games, useless. A lot of us have never played a souls game Your video is awesome, clear, concise and just plain USEFUL. Again, thank you!
This was my first souls game and I was so scared to begin but this game is structured so well the more you play and move around the map the better it gets this is truly the best game ever made. Elon convinced me to get it in his podcast with Lex 😅
Possibly the most comprehensive "EldenRing 4 Dummies" l've had the pleasure to watch. I realise in real terms that this game is now a little old and this is a recent purchase for me, however I have high hopes as I was looking for a tough game with longevity. This is my first souls game so this video is extremely useful. I am enjoying the game immensely but realise it'll be a long haul, a little like Skyrim back in the day perhaps, but that's precisely what was required. Something to get my teeth into. Obviously now I'll check out the rest of your content and I'm extremely grateful to you.
Well, I could listen to your voice all day! How pleasant a channel yo find! Thank you!!! I just picked this game up, been 3 days and I haven't played due to anxiety hahahaha I worry I'll miss something, anything!!
This is hands down the best video for beginners out there. Every other video is told from the perspective of veteran players who forgot what its like to start completely new.
Fantastic guide that I wish I'd found sooner! I've picked up a few extra tips that I'd definitely add though. First, Arcane does everything you described but it also scales status effect build-ups like bleed or poison so it's definitely worth investing in if you have weapons that do that too. Second, the pouch is a much easier way to access flasks or Torrent's whistle than the main equipment slots as it's always a fixed, two-button press to use them instead of a press and hold of the D-Pad. Great for quickly chugging a flask mid-combat or hopping on Torrent to flee a bad situation!
Of all the newbie guides I've read, this one was most helfpul. Looking forward to more from you on this infernally frustrating game. Who thought it would be a good idea to allow other people to leave 'messages' in MY game? HUGE waste of time as most people are just saying stupid useless stuff. I play offline.
Im completely brand new to the game only played for 3 hrs so far. My first impression of this game is Wow it feels like playing final fantasy but with real fighting. Im not normally a fan of extremely hard games but haven't got annoyed and I've probably died 100 times in that 3 hours but each death has taught me something new. Cant wait to die more
I was so frustrated with this game and had almost given up completely on it. Now that I have watched this video, I feel excited to give it another try. Thank you so much!
Ok, same trouble for me. As soon as I encounter an enemy - any enemy - I am almost immediately dead. Very, very frustrating as I don’t know what I’m supposed to be doing and I die before I even get half a chance to develop an iota of a clue as to what to do.
Having not played a souls game in a long time this is exactly what I needed. I tend to do/think the exact opposite of what the fromsoft game wants so I really appreciate this guide a LOT. I can finally have a decent start in a souls game.
This is my first “souls” style game but I’ve already put over 100 hours in and this video was still worth the watch. I’d love to see your detailed video on combat you were thinking about doing. Solid content.
If you upload your save to the cloud, and then die, you can just quit the game, press start on the game icon and click on upload, and then download your last save to your console, and you will be back at the point where you saved and then uploaded to the cloud. You have to turn off automatic syncing however. It’s a tedious thing to do over n over because it requires you quitting the game, closing the game app, clicking the start button on the app and then clicking on upload to cloud (or download to console depending on what you’re trying to do) and then starting the game up again. It’s a tedious but SAFE way to save your progress at a particular point that you are comfortable starting over from, instead of losing your progress and starting over. It’s also a nice little trick to keep your runes. If you have a bunch of runes and recently died but aren’t trying to make your way all the way up to where you died in order to get them back? Upload your save to the cloud at a point you feel comfortable starting over from. Like right before a boss battle for example. I always upload my save to the cloud at the start of a boss battle. That way if I die and lose some consumables that I want to use again, I’ll be able to download my save to my console and try again as if I never died. Again, you have to turn off automatic synching. This is common knowledge but you’d be surprised how many people don’t take advantage of this, especially soulsborne gamers.
Thanks to Aoife and Luke & Ellen from OxBoxtra I’ve been a big fan of these games for a long time, but I’ve never really been ‘good’ at games so I’ve stayed away… until Elden Ring. I definitely felt glad I came in with a lot of background knowledge and knew what to expect, but I’ve still found myself googling things and being thoroughly confused- especially when it comes to my stats. The biggest thing so far was figuring out how on earth to use magic 😂 This video is a total blessing 🙏🏼 (Ps I just got to the Altus Plateau by myself and I’ve been repeating Aoife’s Fromsoft motto “I’m not good, I’m just stubborn” every time I find myself hitting a wall or feeling intimidated. Bless Her 💖💖💖) ((I also had to google like crazy when I found myself transported to Caelid and got no answers except one video from a player who just rested at a nearby bonfire and was taken to the Roundtable Hold by Melina…. Not helpful if you’ve already done that. I figured out the solution for myself and left a comment under that video, and every time it gets a thumbs up I feel so happy that maybe I’m helping others who are panicking after being transported to the nightmare rot world 😂🤢))
Whoa, are people not using the Pouch to store frequently used items, and just throwing everything in with their flasks?? (I noticed Aoife’s wasn’t being used and I was shocked. It’s so handy!) For anyone who is unfamiliar, it’s the six boxes on the right side of the menu above your gestures. On PlayStation, any items placed in the top four boxes can be accessed in game by holding Triangle then tapping Up/Down/Left/Right. (Hitting both simultaneously also works.) That’s where I keep my Torrent ring and Ashes, and in an instant I can summon either one, which is especially useful in the middle of a fight. It’s so much faster than having to cycle past your flasks every time to find the thing you need. And as a newcomer to the FromSoftware experience, I’ve quickly learned that every second I can save is one more second I get to stay alive.. haha.
Thanks for the info. I usually jump into a game, and then after a day or so I end up stopping to look up videos and learning the basics. Not this time though. This time I am watching first and then I can play without stopping for a while. Used my brain today. lol
Just bought the game 3 days ago, my first Souls game. Is that the Carian Knight armor by the way? I like the look. Honestly the biggest tip I could give someone is just practice your roll timing and ability to read attack timing. Biggest change in my game so far was practicing my roll timing vs the Tree Sentinel by the Church. Also, don't rely on parry or blocking. Get your rolling down.
Im a souls veteran and this game in particular is in desperate need of a quest log. The biggest problem i have with elden ring is there is a lot of side quests, and no way to track them. Which means youre probably not finishing very many of them without checking a guide online, which sucks. Most open world games have a quest log for a reason.
i love complicated games, having said that, i've had elden ring on my pc for a year and still haven't found the patience or time to learn how to play it. I know it will be rewarding once i'm familiar with the mechanics, but it's all so different from any game i've played before and I'm too busy to want to learn most days. this video helps
What can I say, this is wonderful, I was ready to give up. I’d been running around without any clue, never played a game like this, although it reminds me a little of Elder Scrolls. Thank you so much, I will need to look at this again, information overload, but great stuff.
Thank you. This is probably something I should have seen before starting the game. My head is spinning with the amount of things to learn. I'm absolutely horrible at this game. For some odd reason I keep on going. I'm mostly struggling with where to go and grind for runes. I find myself trying to figure out what to do and just travel for long periods doing nothing. Almost all the guides online are either extremely dangerous (that's saying something in this game) or information is focused on end game stuff. There's no real information yet that guides you a bit if you're stuck.
