I found that the easiest way to dodge this combo is to leave messages around popular locations saying funny things like "fort night" and "up dog" so that you can outheal Malenia when she does this attack.
@@Emperorhirohito19272 That's literally her easiest attack to dodge. I killed her with a colossal weapon and it was one of the few attacks I could confidently avoid and punish her for using.
@@uhqliss8537 yeah a really fast combo is definitely easier to dodge than a slow jump or thrust with a massive windup… when you lie while bragging it makes the brag less effective, just so you know for the future
@@Emperorhirohito19272 maybe he just has a problem timing his roll on slow windup attacks? I personally found that move easier to dodge than most of her moves, if you roll out of the first one, she can’t really do anything, and then she’s left open
There’s a more effective way of dodging this boss, it involves performing thrust and slam attacks with your controller on the hard drive. 100% certified working method
Technically when you do this, you are literally hitting the boss, or at the very least, it's coding. And if you hit it hard enough to damage the hard drive, you can say that you one-shot every boss in the game. Modern problems require modern solutions!
If anyone has difficulty following the video: 1. When you see the attack start, run away 2. When she goes for the second flurry, dodge through it 3. On the third flurry, stay still until she makes ground contact, then roll away That's what I picked up, anyways.
@@threatball This was my biggest issue. I felt like she kept catching me on the first flurry even though I started running as soon as I saw it coming. I finally used bloodhound step which made the fight so much more enjoyable as I didn't run 50 feet from her after getting her under 3/4 health.
Honestly going up against her felt like I was just rolling the dice for a run where she didn't go for it since if she did I was basically screwed, on second playthrough though I'm 100% gonna be trying to get it down to a science thanks to this vid haha
@@awakemarcher in her first phase, you can check if she's going to do this by throwing a knife at her from a distance. If she has the triple flurry prepped up she'll immediately jump into the air.
@@chickenburrito7861 If she starts her combo when ur right next to her u can’t run faraway enough to avoid the initial 1st set of attacks you’ll likely die, might as well attempt to dodge. The best thing to do is once you get her at 75% health wait for her to do it while keeping ur distance once she does it she’ll likely not do it again, it’s rare for her to do it twice in one phase unless ur taking super long to kill her.
See I think the issue is that since the attack is a 1 hit KO most of the time you get one chance to practice dodging the attack per fight. One of the cruelest moves From Software has ever come up with.
To be fair, they've thrown a shit ton of 1-hit KO moves into this game in particular. Recently replayed Dark Souls 3 and most bosses are much better designed imo. Even Sister Friede was "hard but fair" while there's a bunch of Elden Ring bosses that feel as if From Software just bumped up their numbers for no reason. Highest HP I reached was 2k to test it out and some of the moves still simply 1-tap you, I think it's scripted that way.
@@Edge9404 Malenia is actually one of the bosses that does not have 1-taps (the closest is her command grab, which I survive with like 1 hp at around 40 vigor). There's one random knight at the haligtree however you has a command grab speer move that deals about 90% of your health and then applies rot instantly and it ticks down already while you are in the animation so you cannot do shit about it. That's the most recent example. Other examples are pretty much any boss I found in endgame. Demi-human queen has a oneshot, most dragons have a 1shot, the knight and the clergyman in the crumbling azula map have oneshots.
@@Nerex7 You can avoid 99% of one shots (an expectation that comes to mind getting crushed when a walking mausoleum sits down) with 60 vigor, crimson amber medallion 2, erdtrees favor 2, dragoncrest greatshield talisman, pearldrake talisman +2, full bullgoat set and morgotts great rune active.
So run in a single line then at the second barrage roll back timed to it and the rest can be also be dodged by rolling once per barrage or just casually walking a few meters around. Can't believe Ongbal cracked her most BS move that quickly.
I did the same thing unknowingly. I think it's because she reminds me so much of friede and maria (bloodborne and ds3 bosses) so i instinctively knew how to dudge the flurry
@@imbangmaynn5705 Same but for me it was a different reason. Having played DS3 and BB she does remind me of Friede and Maria, but the Flurry of attacks makes me remember Gennichiro. So it puts me in this weird position of, if this is the same Bias that Friede and Maria had then i should be able to i-frame roll it somehow, but because Gennichiro it makes me hesitate considering that his attack is almost unparryable without the Umbrella and it basically stupid if you try to dodge knowing Sekiro's Dodge so i basically make a bet and yeah kinda succeeded in that.
This is what makes or breaks runs with her. I’ve learned to throw in a shield swap, and keep my stamina healthy. Block the first two flurries then roll towards her the next two.
This seems to be the more reliable method as well since sometimes she starts her combo when you are far to close to her to run away from the first flurry. Either nail your spacing the entire time and hope she never starts it as you're going for an attack or use this method.
Pop barricade shield you can usually out run the first on if you have space hold your ground and block the second one and if you don’t mode she will miss the third
Yeah but shielding gives her like 1/4th of her health back, if she does the flurry twice each phase then it’s basically like you’re fighting 3 malenias instead of two.
@@goomba07 It doesn't give 1 quarter, you only shield the first flurry, you avoid the next 2. Shield First Flurry (if spacing is not good), Roll forward twice for second flurry, Third can be avoided by rolling back or more reliable by not locking on and walking underneath her but she starts the third flurry. She's not healing 25% on one flurry.
I know you can outspace her, I know you can juke her at close range, I know you can use a freeze bomb to cancel it or a shield to block it, I know you can get rivers of blood and melt her in a blink of an eye. But I can't help but wonder what method of dealing with this attack did the developers actually want the players to use? I can't believe that juking her at close range is what the devs intended, that's way too counter-intuitive and nonsensical even for a From game. I really want to believe that there is a way to dodge her from up close without that circling around her bullshit and maybe one day someone will find a proper positioning and roll timing for that, but I'm not holding my breath though. Such a weird attack
i think the shield block 1st, unlock boss, dodge 2nd in a direction to set up the avoid on 3rd is the intended path. Having said that, I'm always under the 3/4 stamina I need to block it..so I just spend most of my time running in to the trigger range for the move to check what she has prepped for me.
I have a pretty consistent strat which gets me through it. Very similar to what you see in this video but for close range it involves me dodging away from her at the right time, running then dodging into her (like the strat here but with an additional dodge roll when at close range). It’s not 100% no hit like the strat here but it’s consistent enough that with 60 vigor and only getting clipped, i can safely punish without needing to use a flask
fromsoft expects you to use summons and shit in this game which is lame for souls fans who just want to master the game solo. which worked great in every other game.
Imo a lot of the later game bosses feel like they cranked up everything about the bosses mechanically but kept you the same old dude from ds3 rolling through stuff. So it just turns into you rolling through all their 8 hit combos or arena wide aoes for the one chance to hit every 20 seconds. Atmoshpere wise and visually, cool, mechanically, sekiro still feels better.
That's because in Sekiro your character has options and mechanics to deal with these fused ones from Sekiro and Bloodborne. Which results in many bullshit boss fights lol. The DS3 guy does not have the mobility/defense of The Good Hunter and Sekiro. Which imo is artificial difficulty. If she didn't do this move I would have beaten her 10 times over
@@edwindwicahyo5375 Ah yes, like that one totally not bs move from the monkey, where he screams and you just have to run away immediately or die. Definitely a fun attack.
In essence, the first vortex is the one to avoid. The second and the third one can be dodged. The first one kind of stun locks you for the second and third one to finish you.
This was one of the most frustrating bosses i‘ve fought in a souls game. I love difficult bosses and maybe i just suck but malenia just wasn‘t fun in the slightest for me Edit: i wrote this comment like a year ago and i‘ve played the game a million times at this point and malenia is now my favorite boss in the entire game, fight me. Opinions change i guess lmao
Other than this move I thought she was great but the realization I should’ve beaten her 40 more tries before I did purely because of this moved pissed me off immensely
@@autisticturtle1849 i think i would‘ve prefered if she had like 2 or 3 specific attacks that healed her a lot instead of having every single attack heal her. Like i would‘ve been fine if her grab healed almost her entire healthbar since it has a clear tell and if you get hit by it it‘s your mistake. But punishing every single mistake this drastically was a bit frustrating
*PSA :* Another thing that's quite important that your audience might not be aware of : the lighter the equipment load, and the more efficient the roll. If the character is below 30% load, as it is the case here since he has only a sword and a shield and no armor, then he will have more s on the roll, and it will consume much less stamina. Obviously, i'm mentioning this regarding the last part of your video about the close range dodge on Malenia's ability. The vast majority of the player base will have a 'medium roll' to work with, which is a roll under 70% equipment load, meaning that it will have *LESS IFRAMES AND CONSUME MORE STAMINA* than what you see in this video. This means that for 99% of the players out there, dodging Malenia's ability at close range will be even more difficult, if not impossible to pull off for some people.
It doesn't even look like it's a very consistent solution for low equip load. Ongbal doesn't do that in his no-hit videos of her, he just greatshields or bloodhound steps. It honestly just isn't a practical solution to the attack, it's more like a weird glitch. Pretty much only works because it throws off the AI's tracking. I don't think that was the dev's intended solution But it's enough for git gud elitists to say "oh nah dude the move is completely avoidable, ur just bad."
The manner in which he is dodging (spacing the first, dodging the second, standing still for the rest to overshoot) would indicate that it shouldn't make a difference whether you're at 0% or 69.9%. And AFAIK it's not confirmed that light rolls have more s. They definitely go further, though.
The problem I have is not dodging the waterfowl but making sure she doesn't pop it when I'm in the middle of an attack animation. If that happens, you're screwed.
Yeah but this is when you have range and are prepared. Most of my deaths to her were from her doing it when she’s right above me and when i’m in the middle of an attack or out of stamina.
Same here. That attack is actually impossible to avoid if she does it in that position. Maybe bloodhound dash could get away, but you run the extremely high chance of getting stunlocked with her second volley
i've beaten every souls game and got the plats for all of them besides ER (currently working on it). i've beaten some bosses including ludwig and Orphan of cos with no damage, and i will say that this attack is the most bs in any of the souls games. on my 2nd try i spammed jump attack with my ultra greatsword and beat her easily because she didn't use this attack. it sucks that this community can't accept that souls games are not perfect and has some bs in them. i still love the game and the boss tho
but like this is the most intentional shit this boss isnt a fight with melania its a fight with that fuckin attack its the only thing that kills me so boring
@@bruixotnegre7267 yea, Souls community unfortunately is cancer. Try criticizing one of the many problems ER has (recycled mob, this bullshit here, poor graphic, terrible performance problems) and all you hear is "muh gid gud"... probably those people defeated this boss at lvl 150+ spamming broken weapon art, mimic tear, jump attack, magic and crap like that. MF I finished every souls game beside BB and Demon just because I don't have a Playstation, I finished Sekiro on NG+ without the charm (and I had fun doing it), I did a SL1 all bosses on DS where I had to perfect some of them (especially the DLC ones) otherwise It would have been 1shot, I can see when it's my fault or when the game is just bullshit. This attack feels simply like a death sentence if she decides to do it when you can't run away, remove it and this boss basically becomes a joke.
And they're all shit at the game, trying to make themselves seem good by putting down others. Anyone who comments get gud on a help video for the game, is just as "bad" as everyone. They looked up the same help as everyone else.
Exactly what I’m looking for. Most video just show how to dodge in distant range and I can 100% do that. But I’m playing strength build in NG+ and mostly don’t have enough time to runaway. High doubt I can do it but at least I know there is indeed a consistent way to do it. Thank you so much
The close one combo is the one which killed me the most, it always caught me by surprise even though i always carefully maintaining my distance after 70% of health and timing she usually do it. Your video is my source to beat Malenia with parry strat, i have fun and feels very good to beat her like this. As side effect, i can comfortably parrying most enemies in elden ring after this run lol
Thank you for showing this without using barricade shield or bloodhound step. Those obviously make it easier, but I don’t want to rely on specific weapon arts or spells to beat a boss.
This is extremely useful but in my opinion of someone needs to come out with a video telling the majority how to dodge a move, I think that tells us something about the design of that particular move. Especially when it’s very powerful
theres literally a reason shes on all the promotional material, in all the trailers, has a statue of her, and is an optional boss. shes SUPPOSED to demand the best from you. shes the culmination of every difficult boss fromsoft has ever had. shes fine the way she is, and this move is designed perfectly. it WILL kill you if you let yourself get hit, but theres more than enough opportunity to manage it.
@@wowitsfrostygames155 You can't get that feeling of failure being your own fault if the correct course of action isn't obvious. This takes such a skillful and technical dodge that it's too much for most of us to surmise, especially in the heat of battle. The safer solution requires you to already be far enough away from her to be able to dodge it, in which case the fight just comes down to getting good RNG, which also doesn't give the player the feeling of fairness.
@@wowitsfrostygames155 lmao the culmination of Fromsoft boss design is praying to RNG that she doesn't do it at close range. This move is the worst designed thing they've ever produced. And OP is right, if there is a 200k viewed video on how to dodge a move, it probably means there isn't a very intuitive solution to it in game. Honestly don't think devs play-tested this. That, or they just want you to shield it
@@smickeyYT its perfectly dodgeable not sure what youre on about. yes its hard, but not impossible and it doesent require single frame perfecting to do. and also, if it really bothers you that much have you ever considered spacing? if in the back of your mind you know "if she uses it at THIS range im fucked." why would you engage her at that range? and lets say youre using a slow weapon lets say the great sword. and lets say you know that if she times it in the middle of your swing your fucked. then just bait out the move. she will almost always use it once, but once she uses it once if youre going at a good pace she wont use it again. if she uses it twice youre taking too long and you aint gonna kill her anyways. this entire game has been teaching you timing, positioning, baiting, patience. and somehow you get all the way here and have learned nothing? malenia isnt the first boss encounter that had a mechanic like this, almost every boss has had a mechanic where if you mess it up youre fucked. if this dude can fight her naked, with basically no health, you can at least do the bare minimum. if youre struggling with this fight, and all you do is blame rng, i dont feel bad for you. you have more than enough ways to deal with the move, you just dont want to. im willing to level with you and say that while i think personally the fight is good as is, if something MUST be done with it, give the wind up an extra second. that should be more than enough time for someone to realize whats happening and run.
@@smickeyYT Did we watch the same video? He dodges/avoids it consistently. There are more videos showing you can dodge this attack without rolling. This game is objectively great. There are some issues with performance and balancing, of course, nothing is perfect. Do you think that this boss (its move) is unfair? Imbalanced? Lazy? Is it trash? GIT GUD SCRUB!
Thank you so much, ive been ramming my head into that attack for so long. this helped me a ton! maintaining the right distance to her to properly react to this move throughout the entire fight is still kinda hard for me atm
yeah you basically have to be constantly running away from her, then quickly punish when she whiffs, then immediately back to running away. This one bullshit move really ruins the flow of the entire fight.
@@CosmicAeon yea the thing is I sat down and took my time to learn the parry timings, got it really consistent by now but whenever she does the waterflow dance after I just parried a hit I just don’t find the time to get out of range of the first barrage. Avoiding the second and third is fine, as ongbal shows here but getting out of the reach of the first one without bloodhound’s step feels impossible if you don’t anticipate it and go on distance beforehand which is a gamble
I was a bit too slow reacting to her starting leap for this move to start running. What I ended up doing was taking a greatshield and blocking the first set of slashes and then dodging through the next two which are a lot more manageable. Kinda sucks that the blocked hits still heal her and later inflict rot but at least I didn't outright die lol.
NO matter how hard I tried, I always get clipped, stunlocked, or just outright fuckin' dead. Thanks, ONGBAL. These videos of you showing off how well-practised you are helps me understand things like that Waterfowl Dance just that little bit more. Perhaps I'll actually practise both of these methods, someday.
I used to hate this combo that she does, if most of the hits hit you it's 100% death, even with 99 Vigor, but now I know how to dodge it thanks to you Ongbal, thank you! 🙏
Even with 99 Vigor? From Software really went all out to just make some bosses in Elden Ring this way...it's by far the best game they ever made but the balance on bosses is one of their weakest imo.
@@trytry9992 it still one shots me on NG+3, the only way I could withstand that combo was to just block it with a Greatshield, and even that didn't always worked
@@Nerex7 I am at 60 vigor and can survive the first flurry and rather easily avoid the 2nd and 3rd. Obviously a few random factors play into this but as long as you aren't running with all negative damage negation it shouldn't one shot you at 99 vigor. Imo the tracking on the first flurry is what needs some tweeking since it's possible to dodge behind her during the inital landing hit but she does this weird 180 turn to almost instantly catch you. I do have clips of me successfully dodging it point blank by somehow redirecting her, not sure how I did it tho. Other than that it's a great fight, one of the best in the series even.
This is a real souls master. Out here giving us a video tip on a hard ass boss. This is what the toxic part of the "Git Gud" crowd should be doing instead of making fun of people who are getting frustrated with a boss!
All you have to do is try and you can learn things others never even thought of. And there are gonna be A LOT more trolls due to the success of Elden Ring.
The biggest challenge avoiding this attack is having the time to run away from it. Also, usually you're mid roll or mid attack so that cuts down the time to run away from this combo I've learned that you should always maintain a 2-3 meter distance from her at all times so you have a larger chance of her attacks missing or her flurry combo going out of range Stay strong fellow Tarnished edit: I FINALLY BEAT HER (in 4 mins 28 seconds) My advice, I beat her with a fully upgraded moonveil katana and used it's ash of war to keep the offensive at long range. When she used her barrage waterfowl, I just guarded the first hit (with some damage ofc) and then dodge roll RIGHT AFTER I blocked the attack and then followed ongbal's dodging strategy I also had the DragonCrest Shield Talisman to heavily negate most of her damage on me, and then used fully upgraded a black knife tiche +10 spirit summon to help me out in the second phase I also used -Millicent's Prosthesis (more consecutive attack damage) -Crimson seed Talisman (more healing) -and Crucible Feather Talisman (more i-frame rolling) hope my advice helps. Stay strong ya'll
What happened to me was that i roll the moment the attack begins, an take the remaining hits(of the first flurry) that are not enough to kill, than i can dodge the rest just like ongbal. Works if you are with a good amount of health. With little health, close range is death guaranteed lmao
exactly - you can run away if you're at distance of few steps. There's also no reliable way to bait this out to then unload few hits without a worry of getting caught. I can run away too when I'm just baiting attack and not actively engaged in fight.
I fought her solo with magic so I had spacing. But my plan with melee playthrough would be to be very careful when to commit to attacks. Or have a shield lol.
good advice for sure but the gripe I have with her is that she can start this move whenever she likes. For example right after you hit her which is stupid.
If you use a shield and have enough stamina you can block the first part and then the second and third part is the same. She heals a bit but better than dying if you can't get away in time.
This is one of the only major battles that I felt like I had to cheese with the mimic summon because it just felt so bullshit to die to this seemingly unavoidable move over and over again. You are a god for showing how to avoid this, next time I fight her I’m gonna try it for real
Its funny how souls players act like its not "for real" if you use a summon. The devs put it in the game because they want people to use the new mechanic. Instead players discredit eachother for using them.
Amazing. After getting killed by it lots, I found that the second she junks up, lock off and I was rolling back twice, forward once then back again. Worked sometimes but not everytime.
Bloodhound's Step does alot of work for me in this fight. Bloodhound Step away in the first two flurries, then Step past her on the third is what's consistent for me
It makes me sad that such a cool fight about sword skill gets ruined by this 1shot combo that doesn't seem to have any pattern to it. Basically "if you're close when she goes in for the attack, just get lucky", or that is how it feels like to me after several hours.
That’s exactly how I did it, the first fury it’s impossible for you too dodge if you have enough decent you can run away from the first and 2nd, must dodge the last ones tho
You can also bait out Malenia's flurry if you throw knives at her. Just distance yourself when you know her HP hits the flurry threshold and start throwing the knives. This way you dont have to worry about her starting the flurry right on top of you and just focus on dodging into her 3rd wave. Plus, throwing knives can be bought cheap at Kale in Church of Elleh for 40 runes ea.
Is there a limit to how often she does it? I used to only see it once or twice at around 2/3 and 1/3 HP, but the moment I equipped a shield she started doing it 3-4 times during the first phase alone.
It's a shame that one of the coolest and most challenging bosses is completely ruined by one badly designed attack. Instead of getting Gehrman vibes from this boss, I get capra demon. What a disappointment honestly..
Malenia is a type of boss whereas her atks are pretty decent and easy to dodge until she pulls a almost impossible move that catch people off guard. Which I personally think it's cool, if you are familiar with Japanese turn based RPG. Like preparing your ass when Sephiroth pulls a supernova, or when Penance from Final Fantasy X one shot the entire party if you don't cast auto-life on your team.
It s really good to see your guides. Since Fromsoft put in this noob mechanc of spirit ashes 95% of guides on youtube you see are just "yea use mimic and no damage boss fight, gg ez next"...
Came here because I want to learn how to dodge her without using BHS, really helpful video. Melania could be a really fun boss, but two things hold her back in my opinion; Waterfowl Dance and her healing on hit. Waterfowl is just too much damage and almost impossible to roll through if you get caught in the first flurry, and her healing on every hit is downright unfair. The punishment from a mistake is the damage you take, adding on the health regen so you can watch your last few hits disappear if you make a mistake on top of the massive damage you’re taking doesn’t make the fight more challenging, it makes it discouraging.
The healing is especially stupid when she doesn't do damage. Her healing from 3 extra attacks on a dead and gone summon makes no sense. Her healing off fully blocked 0 damage hits makes no sense. Like with a tank anything and laugh off any damage type build for my first playthrough, I hated that respec was needed for this because they made a boss that just decides there's no outlasting/out-poise-ing her because even with 0 stamina damage, stance broken, and then one shot.
I've beaten this boss 3 times in my playthrough, and yet somehow still feeling unfair especially for that move. Yes, you can dodge it as shown in a video. But it also requires a precise timing to pull it off. 1 millisecond mistakes could kill you. I tried every talisman every armor every build and yet, still died to her which feels cheap and lame.
Honestly the only way to do this consistently is just to expect it after she gets to half healt and already be 10 feet away. If she initiates it when you're next to her, and you're in medium load, you're not avoiding it. Literally the dumbest boss mechanic in FROM history
Literally doesn't even look like we're playing the same game. Even if I bait it and pre run she gets on top of me instantly. If I stay in and try to dodge I always get hit no matter how I time it. Meanwhile this dude rolls once or twice then walks around while she spazzes out all around the room. Ive done 40 attempts so far and she does every flurry directly on top of me. Even on the few times where I dodged the first slash, she does the rest right on top of me.
I... I HAD TO STAY STILLLLLLLLLLLLLL! The first 2 slashes were easy enough with distance but that last part felt RNG with my dodges cause the camera went crazy so I tried breaking lock on dodging forward with mix results, specially duo to the attack also changing depending on terrain height. I would love to see consistent dodging of this attack on phase 2, some rules might also change there.
I fucking love this boss. To beat her you need to be PERFECT. You get hit, she heals. You get caught in her flurry, you're dead. You need to be flawless, and how appropriate for an endgame optional boss. People complaining about it thinking she is frustrating and bullshit, you are correct. That is how she is supposed to be. You wanna beat her? Get fucking good.
Not sure why no one has mentioned it but the key to dodge it as close range is to TURN YOUR LOCK-ON OFF on the first swing (which is so wildly unintuitive), re lock on, and dodge through second one normally, and the 3rd one dodge the OPPOSITE way from where she goes (because the camera fucks with you if you just try to go backwards) Single hardest move in Soulsborne to dodge fully. I think it's literally impossible at close range without locking off. I tried every kind of roll direction/timing I could (aside from Bloodhound step which i think works too)
I've done it close range (as in, her using it at the same time I throw out a UGS jumping R2) and it's possible without lock on shenanigans, just the roll timing and direction is absurdly tight, you won't get out unscathed but you will live
My mimic took it all too but the amount of health she regen from that move is terrified as well. I got so close to phase 2 then but that move on mimic changed it all :((
I can't seem to outrun her first burst, even if I start well away from her. Is there some rubber banding with the attack, or is the terrain the problem?
As most hitboxes are very precise there is many attacks you can avoid just by sticking close to the boss. Kind of easy to figure out are the iron miadens, but there are multiple attacks for Margit and other main bosses. Its actually pretty crazy to just casually walk around and avoiding death :D
The crucible knight have this attack with his shield where he would push his shield up and knock you up. I found out that if you just walk to the right and forward while the camera is locked to him you can just avoid his attack and get a 3 hit combo on him. This makes his first phase very easy. Sadly in his second phase, his tail whip attack breaks this strategy.
Do you run faster or something with no clothes on? Tried running but i guess i mist not have been far enough away. A description of what you look for when dodging would be nice, i seem to always dodge too early and get caught in recovery frames, dodge in the wrong direction, or both lol Thanks
As someone wasted 5 hours couldn't figure out how to dodge this flurry Seeing this attack just automatically rings "I am Melania, blade of Miquella" in my brain
I assume you saw the same video on the dodge as I did because your close range technique is identical. That attack is nuts in any case, in your no-hit run when you pulled out the cyclops shield I laughed my ass off. Great video.
If you are having a hard time with the first flurry, just run away form her as soon as she goes up, and when she start the attack, just do a lil jump away from her. For the second, roll into it, for the third, stand still and when she touch the floor, roll away. It works for me.
Honestly ever thought of making boss guides? It would be cool to see what techniques you have created to demolish the different bosses… although half of it would probably just be “parry this attack” lol
you can block this attack pretty well if you have the jelly fish shield or another shield that blocks 100% physical damage (although i'm not sure how effective the others are), as long as you have enough stamina. ive been able to block this attack consistently, and its probably the easiest way to deal with it, so i'd recommend it to anyone who's struggling ^_^
The trick is to have superhuman intuition and be able to start running the moment she starts the attack. Something I'm inherently terrible at, because my brain needs a few ticks to know what I'm seeing and remember the best response. So failing that, you need perfect dodges, starting in just the right spots, in just the right directions. Mess up one and you're probably screwed because it means your positioning is off for the remaining attacks. This boss seems to exist specifically to challenge people like Ongbal, who practice against these games enough to make them cry. I know there are alternative strategies using Ashes of War (Blood Hound Step is the only thing that I could start using reliably), bleed or frost to knock her out of it, or just having help, but this feels like the only attack by any boss that demands flawless dodge technique to survive, regardless of build. I don't have enough hours in the day or patience for a single game to get that good. What this boss did bring to mind, though, is something that I think makes for a less frustrating dynamic in boss fights. More and more, FromSoftware games (as well as a lot of their imitators) feel like the right way to do difficulty is to punish the player as much as possible for making mistakes. One-hit kills, stunlocks, grab attacks, AoE's and aftershocks, all of this becomes a huge boundary to me in learning how to fight these bosses, because I have to start completely over after one or two mistakes in a row. This became overwhelming by the end, since so many bosses had second phases that used completely different attacks, or just a completely different second boss, and you had to do the first phase over again. To me, Malenia's health drain alone would have made this more appealing, without the ridiculous wombo combo here, because taking hits just prolongs the fight until you begin to master it. But then this move came out, and I never got the hang of it because I would get killed instantly and have to start the fight over. Once I realized she had a second phase, that truly put the nail in it and I just haven't tried it again. Maybe some day. It stands at odds with Sekiro, which gave you a few courtesies - at least one free resurrection per fight, usually enough space to sprint away and heal in any fight, and generally the bosses didn't switch to completely different attacks in subsequent phases. The two exceptions being the Guardian Ape, which I know people take issue with because there aren't really any other fights that behave like that; and the final boss having you fight Genichiro again each time you fail. In that case I don't think it's that bad because honestly, he ends up being quite easy at that point, and he doesn't behave a whole lot different over Isshin's first phase. Compared to that, Malenia just feels like the kinds of boss fights in shitty mid-2000's games that would kill you instantly if you failed a surprise QTE in the middle of it. And so did that Astralborn's god damn teleport grab attack, for that matter. I only ever felt like I got lucky dodging that one properly, because I could never pan the camera around quickly enough to see it coming.
U can roll the firstpart of the flurry combo Just stand infront of her and time your roll perfectly( roll into her ) then run away for the second part (she turns around for the second part AKA doesnt move that far towards you cuz she has to turn Last part she tries to predict you so while you run away, the moment she comes down to do the third part Just perfectly time another roll INTO HER Ez pz never have to run across the arena anymore Pro tip: this is an advance way for dealing with this, you can use this technique if you don't have bloodhound step or not enough time to outrun the first flurry combo I did the bossfight more then 500 times cuz i'm helping random people with my summon sign, wearing the ring that makes enemies more agro on myself so the host doesn't die by the flurry combo i might make a yt vid on how to do it
@@BigDBrian ok i will i do it this weekend , i'm on boarding school rn and only go home in weekends, i'll send a message here again to tell u when i have posted the vid I'll send it on friday
@@hayonflame1574 thank you very much for that. I'll look into it when I get to her on my second character. It may have had to do with you being a phantom, though, have you done it in a solo fight as well? In past games, when bosses do attacks with a lot of movement, it tends to desync a bit, which could mess with the tracking.
This is the first move since freaking 2007 ( Kingdom Hearts 2) that I had to look up online how to dodge lmao. Once you see it it's not hard to execute compared to the stuff in that game, but it still had me stumped 😂
@@Thisisthegreatestatofalltime 10 year old me couldn't figure out how to deal with Xigbar's small square move. In hindsight it's hella easy to deal with, but I was still stumped. Maybe I was even dumber than I am now idk. But it was the last time I looked up a boss guide for a specific move until Malenia
@@pilot3605 Yea that’s one of the few moves in the base game that can be somewhat hard to dodge especially without drives or drive abilities. Even then though it can be dodged intuitively and consistently, both those things do not apply to waterfowl.
Does this work on a mid-weight build aswell? The way you move your character on the third slash is exactly how I learned to dodge it aswell. But using a shield on her first slash and dodging forward on her second seems to work 100% of the time too. The only issue I'm facing is if she decides to do this right after I punish her, I don't have enough stam to guard through her first slash which leads to getting fully hit on her second slash. But it doesn't happen too often fortunately. This flurry looks so dope and I can't wait to beat her and get her sword. Hopefully today! 🙏
Ongbal : OH I KNOW THIS I KNOW THIS!! I TOTALLY OWNED A DUDE THAT HAS HIS NAME AS HIS MAIN MOVE AND IT LOOKED LIKE THIS. Sadly i killed him in cold blood tho cause you know shura thing
Alternatively, if you have the FP to use it, throw bloodhound's step ash of war on a dagger or other very light weapon, then just keep dashing around her and away from her
Easiest way is to do the 2 million soul grind at Mogwyn Palace until level 250, use larval tear to respec stats and become a tanky 1-shot mage with 99 int/50 vigor (dont forget the 40 mind), use mimic tear as a tank, then shred with the Giant Stone spell or when shes standing still the Kamehameha. Okay maybe not an easier way but a more tedious and safer way lol.
This is a sekiro boss in a souls game. And it doesn't work. Everything else she has I can forgive, but giving her an attack that forces you to back off preemptively in case she uses it, is bad boss design. I killed inner isshin in sekiro resurrections ng +7 charmless demon bell, and I think that boss is bullshit. Not hard, bullshit. It's pretty easy to kill if you are willing to make compromises to your gameplay, but if you're good enough, you shouldn't have to be forced to do it. I'm sure that even ongbal would have some trouble finishing the boss without parry or tricks like a frozen pot. And the dude is inhuman.
Being mid-animation or low on stamina make the first strategy harder to pull off. Medium armor also runs slower, so the time frame is even tighter. I beat her by using my mimic to stunlock her so this move doesn’t come out.
