Being queer is like the Dark Souls of sexual orientations.
For many of the characters in Elden Ring, their queerness is essential to understanding the game's lore. In this video, I cover Ranni and her canonically gay wedding, how Rykard is an example of bi erasure, the unsettling historical Japanese practices of wakashu and shinju that may have inspired Mohg and Miquella, and how alchemy can explain Marika and Miquella’s genderfluid natures.
Depending on the reception, I'd love to do a follow-up video that further explores the very gay themes found in Elden Ring.
Also, I use the word “queer” as an act of reclamation and as an inclusive umbrella term for the LGBTQ+ community/gender and sexual minorities generally speaking.
