Right? Even if he would have put it in the bank to save since he wasn't working. Wasn't the follow-up episode the Meathead needs an operation? Who paid for that? Archie of course
During this time he was getting an education to improve his and his wife's lot in life. Clearly you didn't get an education. Today more young people are having to live with their parents as their aren't enough jobs, and life is getting harder and harder financially for them. This is due to self interested decisions by politicians who are meant to be lifting the quality of living for all. Not just for themselves and their rich friends. Open your fuckin' eyes!
@@RickMartinRU-vid I. Am. Not. A. Crook. Lol. But seriously, considering the past three Presidents (Obama, Trump, Biden) and comparing them to the 37th President, Nixon was a competent, coherent, stable Commander-in-Chief and, again, compared to the last three Presidents (Obama, Trump, Biden), Nixon was not as corrupt, unethical, immoral as the 44th, 45th, 46th Presidents. Society, as a whole, has really regressed (not progressed) since the Nixon Administration
Mike was so concerned about the working man, yet Archie was a working man living paycheck to paycheck while his daughter and her husband were living off of him.
Sometimes I don't think Meathead and Gloria appreciated the fact that Archie was letting them both live there, rent free, . For 4 years. That's obvious in this episode. Meathead should have given most of that money to Archie.
They were communist. They don't have thier own money or own anything, just other people's. Although in theory, they should share everything they are able to get. Isn't that how that works 🤷♂️🤣
Even if they love their wife and their wife loves them, eh? It has been persuasively put, that when it becomes easy to love thy neighbor, it i no longer a virtue.
Yep. McGovern won only Massachusetts and DC, for a whopping 17 electoral votes. Of the 521 remaining, Nixon got 520, the only faithless elector was one from Virginia who voted for Libertarian John Hospers.
I was watching the movie "Damn Yankees" recently (the 1958 version). Jean Stapleton had a pretty good-sized part. It was her first ever movie role. It was funny to see Edith Bunker in a different role. She did really well including a song alongside 4 little league boys singing "You Gotta Have Heart". It was funny to see Edith Bunker singing. She actually sang really well. Then, in the winter of 1986, I saw her in "Arsenic and Old Lace" on Broadway. She did a great job in that as well.
Mike was so willing to give the money to someone else, instead of helping out at home. Mike didn't want to give the money to Archie, but he sure didn't mind eating what Edith prepared
For those mentioning mike living there rent free: this was shot during the early to mid 70s, and at that time daughters DID NOT leave the home until married. Often, the son in law would move in rent free but, of course, contribute to the household anyway he can. In addition, this was during a time when college was becoming essential, so often the son inlaw would attend school.
Tricky Dicky. Nixon's dirty tricks. My fellow American's, let me make this perfectly clear. I am not a crook. You won't have Nixon to kick around any more.
I liked this show most of the time but the one thing I didn't understand sometimes is how the Family never saw Archie's point of view on nothing the family know Archie is Right they just don't want to admit it
They sure didn't have a problem with Archie supporting all 4 of them even when it meant driving a cab at night for some extra money AFTER working at a loading dock which is physically demanding work especially for a guy Archies age.
Mike wasn't in the position to be donating money to anyone's political campaign. His father in law and his wife were supporting him. He should have bought Gloria the winter coat then given Archie some of that money.
Mike did not ask to be screamed and yelled at by his bigot of a father in law who was (secretly) jealous of him. Im a woman and it took me a few years to find a job! and im still looking for another one now. at the end of the day it was none of Archies business what mike did with HIS money!
I see all these conservatives in the comments supporting Archie's view. I hope you understand that this show was deeply liberal, and so were the cast-members, especially Carroll O'Connor.
At the MINIMUM Mike should have split 50-50 with Archie--and honestly he should have given all of it to him as a gesture of good faith. But self righteous holier than thou lefties don't think that way!! It's ALL about THEM!!
McGovern won 1 state, maybe because his running mate,Eagleton was mentaly ill...Archie was more right than we thought.Back then we thought he was hilariously nuts.
Calm down folks.... This is a situation comedy designed to get a reaction out of you. However, Michael had some kind of nerve to be sitting at Archie's table eating his food comfortable that he did not have to share $1 (to show appreciation fior the sacrifices Archie made). The writers were very smart in that they showed the Archie Baker character as a bigot BUT also showed the Michael character as fanciful liberal out of touch with reality. It was Archie working during the week and driving a cab on weekends while Michael is 'studying'. With time and distance, the Michael Stivic character has not held-up well.
If Meathead had used that money to buy a good suit and look for a job, or to save as a deposit on his own place, then he should have kept it. Otherwise, yes, it's part of the debt he owes Archie.
I saw the full episode two nights ago. Mike's uncle Alex bequeathed him $500 but 225 went toward back taxes. The remainder was $275. About 80 got set aside for Gloria's winter coat and the rest went to McGovern. Mike worked evenings and saved $150, given to Archie after yet another argument.
I always thought Archie was a jerk when I was a kid but he is completely correct his daughter and husband are freeloaders and they don't care that Archie has all the bills to pay and he's the only one working no one helps him at all and what the heck is wrong with Gloria why isn't she helping him pay for things she should be paying them rent when you turn 18 you should pay your parents rent if you live at home
At 2:58 they mention Rin Tin Tin, I thought, " Yeah, remind Rob Reiner of that ..." I read Carl Reiner's autobiography (did he write two of them)? Carl mentioned that Robbie's favorite TV show in the 1950s was "The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin"; later Carl said he was going to buy a dog for his kids, a pet and a guard dog at the same time. And Robbie was saying, " I want a Rinnie dog! Carl got a German Shepherd , but it was a puppy so Rob was saying " That's not a Rinnie dog!" The dog's name was Rinnie ever since ...
NO ONE should join the evil US (or any other) military. Those in it should quit promptly and shut it down forever. The money saved should address the No. 1 climate crisis. At least Sen. George S. McGovern, though a Democrat, in 1972 proposed trimming the huge US $80 billion per year military budget all-too-modestly down to $50 billion per year and ending the Vietnam War. Nixon, like all POTUSes from LBJ thru Biden, belonged in prison for war crimes and environmental crimes. Carter was the least-worst of that sorry lot.
Mike should have given a least half of the 200 dollars to Archie and maybe a bit more! In real life Archie Carol O*Conner would have given McGovern 2000 dollars to McGovern people why!!? because Archie ie Carol a true liberal made Mike Look like a trump supporter;!
@@CelebrityGamerTV Mike was not a moocher he just wanted to help people, Its mike's money not archies he could do what he wanted with it. archie is always yelling and screaming at mike over " he does not have a job" he eventually got a job after graduation.
@@priestessmikokikyo77 1) I never saw this entire crappy series 2) Wasn’t he living with his girlfriend and her family? I thought he marries her and got her pregnant. You could've filled the last two rows of an SUV with $200 worth of groceries in '72! In real life, though, Carroll O'Connor no doubt voted for McGovern, being a liberal Democrat himself. McGovern carried only Massachusetts and DC that year, for a whopping 17 electoral votes. Nixon got everything else, except for one elector from Virginia who voted for Libertarian John Hospers.
Early 70's would father would drag my brother and I to the s/market my Mother and him. 6 kids- 5 boys and my sister growing up in Boston. We would come with 9 bags and here about it from him. "I spent $100 on you kids this week.." 9 bags...$100.
ten times more than it would have today, I look at the home alone movie when Keven brought all those groceries for almost twenty-bucks, macaroni and cheese dinner, milk, and a few other things, this was 1990, your lucky to be able to by half of that stuff today.
I think Mike was stupid. If he wasn't going to give the money to Archie he should have never read his inheritance out loud in front of Archie and kept it himself but then again CBS and all in the family wouldn't have a storyline.😅
@@gb032645Yea McGovern lost by the biggest landslide in history then the winner ends up resigning from the office over scandal. U.S. Politics was quite a mess in the early to mid 70s smh
AND WE KNOW HOW THAT TURNED OUT FOR NIXON ---LOL -- HE WON THE ELECTION, WENT DOWN AS ONE OF THE NATION'S MOST DISGRACED PRESIDENTS IN HISTORY, RIGHT NEXT TO TRUMP (BOTH REPUBLICANS) ---- LOL
What a clever character that Mike was. Dark money or what? I love how this sitcom series kept everyone guessing about all the other characters other than Archie when at home.
Archie-Type. Bubble-Bunker Mentality. He's Right. And *_HE KNOWS HES RIGH_*, and facts to the contrary are immaterial, for better and mostly worse, for most anybody else, but HIMSELF -maybe. G*d bless 'em‽
Archie -Type. Bubble - Bunker Mentality. He's Right! And *_HE KNOWS HES RIGHT_* !! AND TOO PROUD of it , and facts to the contrary are immaterial, for better and mostly worse, for most anybody else, but HIMSELF -maybe. G*d bless 'em.
Mike should have never wasted that money on McGovern. He ought to have banked it. Archie didn't need it right then but the following year when he went on strike they could've used it then and Mike could've figured he was paying back some of his bill to Archie. I love love love what they said at the last. "For the life of me I'll never understand women! The way they marry some guy who always makes a damn fool of himself but still they LOVE him!" "That's right Archie!" batting eyes. Brilliant!
Someone should've told Mike. Ya know in all the time I've watched this show and this episode (which is one of my favorites) it never occurred to me. Mike could've told Archie he was going to use it to buy books for school, or help with his school bill (we never do hear about Mike being on a scholarship, he must've been because they never tell us how he's paying for his schooling, only that Archie is paying his room and board (and Edith is doing all the cooking and laundry etc. for him) and Archie would've accepted that. Then he could still have given it to McGovern. It would've avoided the argument with Archie. But then we wouldn't have such a great episode. I do this all the time. Figure out ways characters on sitcoms could've avoided arguments and other problems but then the episode wouldn't be as much fun. @@jeanbeget
@@alondralabute2310 .. it bothered me that he could have contributed more to the household in ways other than money but never much did. Classes ,studying, researching and writing papers didn't consume every waking hour, seven days a week, for all the time he lived there.
Exactly. He never did a lick of work, he never helped with anything. I remember 2 episodes where he followed Gloria and Edith from dining room to kitchen and back again, the women were carrying salad bowls, plates with food etc. while Edith told them something and Mike carried nothing. In the other episode he watched Gloria working and didn't help at all. And how many times did Gloria help Edith in the kitchen while Mike and Archie sat waiting for dinner? Archie had at least worked that day but Mike had only gone to school and sitting at a desk isn't as strenuous as Archie's job. And Mike could've gotten a part time job nights and weekends. He could've asked them to schedule him at times when big tests weren't coming up he had to study for. The only time he actually worked was later in this episode when he worked at a gas station to pay Archie back the $200 he gave McGovern. Why didn't he keep that job? Oh yeah, and why didn't he drive the cab now and then and give Archie a night off? @@msr1116
@@alondralabute2310 .... For this situation, it would have been entirely reasonable to have Mike carry some of the load of necessary daily or weekly household chores. All those able- bodied should contribute effort to keep things running smoothly and not burden anyone excessively. I don't know anybody who'd tolerate the Bunker house arrangement these days, unless they're very traditional and expect the educated person to provide for them in the future.
@@user-xe5cz3dw8m Yes, he was, and the shows creators constantly depicted him as a buffoon who always got it wrong. As a true conservative, I find All In the Family insulting.
Mike was right about one thing: the dems needed to put on a telethon for Biden: $100,000 for a picture & another $500,000 for a meeting with him. Yea, they are putting on a telethon "just to keep their heads above water."
