We love electric rideables. Hoverboards, skateboards, scooters, motorcycles, mopeds, unicycles, tricycles… You name it, we’ve ridden it. But electric bikes belong in a category of their own because they are more than just a fun tech fad. They could actually be the future of transportation. That said, there’s a lot to choose from out there, and you don’t want to get fooled, so here’s what you need to know.
Around 5:20 in the video, we say that in Europe, class 1 e-bikes are the most popular. Actually, the most popular e-bikes in the EU are unregulated with motors rated at 250W.

Don't know if anyone has corrected this already, but regarding the stuff at 4:28: Volts * Amps = Watts, which is a measure of power (work done per unit time). Volts * AmpHOURS will give you WattHours, which is a measure of battery capacity. A 500Wh battery can power a 500W motor for 1 hour (minus minor losses due to efficiency).

@tconnolly9820
@tconnolly9820 2 года назад
With a "pedelec" e-bike you will have to pedal to also engage the motor. There are different levels of assist depending on the particular bike. Low is usually about an additional 50% assist along with pedalling. High/Turbo is usually around 250/300% assist along with pedalling. But depending on where you live, the motor stops assisting when you reach 20mph. 15mph in Europe. You might be thinking of an e-scooter? And no, pedaling will not charge the battery. The more you pedal and the lower assist level you select, the less battery you will use. That's all.

My primary form of transportation is an ebike and it really does make a lot of sense in a city like Portland where there is good enough infrastructure to make it work. It’s got me riding again where I had started to lean more heavily on public transit and now I barely use transit. I think price is a real barrier but if you are planning on going car free then it’s easier to justify the cost. People justify spending thousands of dollars on a lot of stuff it just depends on what you are looking to get out of it. Of course it will seem expensive if you are only looking at it as a toy or something for recreation....that’s fine of course but it really can work as primary transportation as long as you have the right gear to make it work.

Great video - expertly explained. I run an eBike tour company, so I know what I’m talking about 🙂 And on that subject, here’s my 5 cents: I totally get the advantages of mid-drive and of torque sensors (in fact I’ve got a bike with that set up, and it’s great). But if you want to experience the most fun (“wheeee”!) feeling on an eBike - go for a rear hub motor with a cadence sensor. And ideally with a throttle as well as pedal assist (if your country’s regulations allow that). Guaranteed fun! 😎

The biggest problem for e-bikes is theft, in places like victoria bc and vancouver there are bike thieves all over, thats the number one reason why i havnt gotten one yet, sure they are great for a joy ride but if you wanna take it downtown and go for a meal or a drink or coffee, theres a good chance your bike could get stolen if it's not within view for you.

One reason I stopped biking to work was where to put my bike. At work we didn’t have a specific indoor place. And locking it up outside was not safe. For some reason the area is safe but for bikes it’s like theft central. Any types on locking out door? Four locks? Or just need to find and indoor solution?

Electric Bikes could be the future. But we need to change the roads to make them more friendly to make that future happen. Most people are too afraid to ride their bikes next to a car. We need to upgrade the bike lane so all people feel comfortable riding their bikes anywhere.

I agree fully with you, but one of the benefits of ebikes is that they make up for some of the problems our roads have right now. It is a lot less scary and dangerous to navigate some narrow busy bit of road with no shoulder when you can basically keep up with traffic when needed. Even class 2 bikes can greatly reduce the number of cars you need to interact with just by increasing speed a little, while still keeping effort reasonably low.

Who is getting "stressed out" pedaling a bike? I am a passionate cyclist and anything that gets people into cycling has some merit to me. Plus there are huge benefits for those physically unable to cycle - my father being a great example. Without them he'd be hanging up his helmet and I am grateful the technology exists to allow him to continue. But for the people that are simply unwilling- not unable to pedal, why? And part of the attraction for me is to get away from technology (or at least digital technology) and ebikes take away from that 'purity'. Still if it gets people on bikes and out of cars I guess that's good.
@kylesmith4619
@kylesmith4619 5 лет назад
Not really something that's unique to regular bikes and not ebikes, but for me the stress comes from trying to stay alive and not get hit by a car when there are no bike lanes, or the "bike lane" is just a marking in the right lane indicating that one is supposed to be shared between cars and bikes
@DononovanKeith
@DononovanKeith 5 лет назад
Maintaining pace with traffic in the summer without sweating through your work clothes can be stressful. If you're not keeping pace, at least in Los Angeles, drivers can get quite impatient and aggressive. Perhaps these aren't stressors for you, but I think they prevent at least some potential cycle-commuters from riding.

Rad power bikes are good top speed about 24. Juice bikes which I have one is awesome top speed 28 mph. Sondors bike is another good company. Just review each site for cost and your needs. I choose Juice for over all top speed and range. My cross current x older model gets 50 to 70 miles per charge. That's if I keep in level 2. But if I place in sport mode I can get about 40 miles.

I have some real questions no one seem to have answered in a non-marketing way. What is the longevity of the batteries? Not counting the cheap batteries blowing up like the ones on the cheap hoverboards, how many charges can the batteries take before they need to be replaced? They all seem proprietary, so how would we know the manufacturer will still be around by the time we need a replacement? And what do they do with the batteries?

I have a Trek electric from 2014. It uses a Bosch central Motor 250w with a battery pack of 400Wh. My bike now has 22.400km on the odometer. It has lost about 20% of range in "eco mode" and about 30% in "turbo mode". I opened the proprietary battery pack by curiosity, and it's full of standard Lithium cells 18650. Bosh still provide that model/shape of the pack now (even in a 500wh version), but if they stop making it, I know I can still replace the cells with new ones.
