Joe Hammond takes a closer look at the importance of cable insulation, and how it plays an essential role in providing basic as well as fault protection. Electricians everywhere have undoubtedly witnessed unprotected conductors outside their elements - but with this knowledge on hand, they can now ensure that cables are kept safe from external forces!

Nice video and it is great to see that the team is growing bigger. But i have to say that the sun scares me more than water ever have. I have seen some old sketchy cables where the insulation falls of to the bare copper just by touch.

As for the meter tails there is plenty for marking tape and cable tys with marking on to enable the grey outer sheath to enter the enclosure.

Hi there, I have just had an EICR done on two flats. The cables running from the meter box outside are double insulated and there is a cut out fuse between the meter and the cables running to the flats. Before the meter is the 100amp supply cut out fuse. The electrician has failed this and says I need to change the isolator switches to fused isolator switches and that I need mechanical protection on the cable that is just over 3m in length. The electrics were done in the early 1990's when the flats were built. I have had another electrician tell me this is not needed.

Minor quibble: Elves and Pixies you referred to section 412.1.1 as "dot 1 dot 1. I'm sure you would not refer to 1.5 as being 1 dot 5. or Period. It's 412 subsection 1, sub-sub section 1 or 412 point 1 point 1.
@efixx
@efixx Год назад
This is an interesting discussion point (or dot) actually, a couple of the IET chaps use the dot format, having said that I quite like sub-sub-section! 😃👍

I can't understand why some Sparks strip the supplementary insulation off of meter tails in the consumer unit before it goes into the main switch? This should be left intact all the way to the main switch. Should the basic insulation be damaged and someone comes into contact with it then they're toast as there's not much upstream to protect them other than a 100A fuse. I've even seen blue and brown flex-tails with the supplementary insulation stripped off. Beggars belief
@PardoeElectrical
@PardoeElectrical Год назад
I agree, when installing grey meter tails, just use brown and blue insulation tape to identify your conductors 🤷🏼‍♂️

If in doubt, then double insulate it. Reminds me of 15 - 20 years ago. If in doubt then bond it.

Right at the start of the chapter 4 of the standard it says you can choose one of the protective measures. When you choose automatic disconnection you don’t need double isolation. Or do you? Then the enclosure seems unnecessary..

So would wrapping the individual conductors up to, and including, the gel box with self-amalgamating tape bring it up to code?
