Great first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole.🦊I'm glad it makes no difference to what you think, but they're metal when they want to be. They know what people think ... the intro song on their 3rd album even has the lyric "This ain't heavy metal. Welcome to the world of BABYMETAL" This collaboration came about because BABYMETAL, who like to mix things up (they have about 70 songs now and each one different to the last - some are good hard metal, some lean towards their pop roots, they do everything in between and they will also mix and blend in so many other musical styles and genres with the metal) were wanting to make a song in the Electric Callboy style that everybody could dance along with, but they felt something was missing. They decided they would ask EC if they wanted to get involved, so as they were both playing in Boston BABYMETAL went to the EC concert and met up with them back stage and chatted before the show. 'RATATATA' was the result and, although it is very much in the EC style, it was a real 50-50 collaboration with a lot of back and forth between the bands with their respective ideas ... and they had something like 20+ versions before agreeing on this final version. They have played it live together at least 8 times already in Tokyo and at festivals in Germany and Spain and you can see they are all having the very best time. BABYMETAL do everything. That's one reason their collaborations all work so well, they are so versatile they can do pretty much whatever style and match up with whoever they are collaborating with. If you are interested in something original and unique BABYMETAL should be just the thing for you. They formed in 2010 creating their own new metal sub-genre. In the 14 years since then we have watched them grow up (they were aged 12 and 11 when they started) to become one of the very best live bands on the planet (not just my opinion, they have international awards that say the same thing). They started as a fusion of Metal with J-Pop hooks, melodies and aesthetics including choreographed dance - but not as you know it. Their choreo is not used to titillate or distract like it is by most pop acts etc, it is interpretive, relating to the meaning of the song or a lyric - very handy for us non-Japanese speakers - but most importantly it is used to engage with, include and involve the audience. They are masters of crowd control and can get whole arenas (not just the front rows) jumping, chanting and joining in, following their lead. As an old school rock and metalhead I had no interest in choreographed dance (and I still don't with any other artists), but BABYMETAL's choreo just enhances and improves everything ... I have no idea how, it just does. BABYMETAL are: Su-metal lead vocalist, now 26. Moametal scream (ie backing vocals, harmonies leading crowd chants etc) and dance, recently turned 25. Momometal scream and dance, she's 21 and became the official third member on April 1st last year. The original third member was Yuimetal (scream and dance). She last appeared in October 2017 then missed the big shows for Su's 20th birthday in December under her doctor's advice. She was missing for the 2018 tour and in October 2018 she announced she was still not fully recovered and had decided to leave the band. Su and Moa continued as a duo for the next 4 or 5 years supported by any one of 3 dancers (the Avengers) for live shows. After about March 2020 only one Avenger was still with them - that was Momoko Okazaki ... and on 1st April 2023 she was finally revealed as the new third member Momometal and got a mic so she can help Moa out with the backing vocals and so on. As I said, they have about 70 songs, each one different to the last. Their official videos are all very good and worth seeing (3 or 4 are almost essential viewing), but they are even better live. Do you want to see them being really metal? Try 'BABYMETAL Death' live at Legend 1997 ... the first song on their first album played as the finale at Su-metal's 16th birthday concert in December 2013 - she was born in 1997. A couple more suggestions if you want to try them - 'Megitsune' live at PIA Arena April 2023, 'Monochrome' also live at PIA Arena April 2023, 'Headbanger' live at Legend 1997 (abr metal has a high quality video you can use for this), 'Rondo of Nightmare' (with Mischiefs of the Metal Gods instrumental intro) live at Budokan Black Night 2014 - this one is a Su-metal solo, Yui and Moa were taking a break back stage.
Amazing info! I’ll be pinning this for sure!!! This was my first full song I’ve heard by/with BabyMetal. I’ve heard others and they were super poppy with a shit ton of crunch. I actually like the melodic tones they bring in to this song and it’s their chorus that is stuck in my head!!!

I'd guess you heard 'Gimme Chocolate' - really not the best introduction to them (unless you find a good live version, those are good fun once you know what else they can do). I'm pretty sure you will like a whole lot of their songs in that case - they brought melody back to metal (I'd almost given up with everybody growling and screaming at me). Su-metal is an incredibly versatile vocalist - she will make you feel all sorts of emotions even if you don't understand a word she is saying.

Welcome to the Foxhole 🦊🤘🔥 It's always nice to see more reactors getting into this amazing group, they're a global phenomenon from Japan and trust me you have seen nothing yet. Here's a brief info about this amazing group: BabyMetal is a Japanese metal dance unit created in 2010 under another Jpop/Jrock group called Sakura Gakuin, they had 11 and 12 years old when started this and become independent after 2013, they created their own genre called kawaii-metal (kawaii means cute) mixing Jpop with metal sound and different subgenres along with many more rhythms. Their name is a reference to a new genre and not related to their ages or "baby" faces, is a pun intended play on words with "heavy-metal" which sounds similar to "baby-metal". They are: *SuMetal* lead vocalist, now 26. *MoaMetal* scream and dance, recently 25. *MomoMetal* scream and dance, she's 21 and is the new official member since April 1st last year. -YuiMetal- scream and dance, former member since 2018. None of them are related. After 2018 you'll see backup dancers performing along with them but none of them are official members, they don't sing, only dance, but remember that status changed last year. There's no other group like them around and teaming up with this group from Germany just elevated them even higher. If you doubt about them being metal enough for you you should go straight with Babymetal Death live at Legend 1997, but also Road Of Resistance live in Japan official MV (2015) as well many more songs are proof enough they got the best blend between heavy-metal and Jpop along with plenty of genres and subgenres that will blow your mind. This single reached Number 1 best selling song in the US Billboard rock/metal chart for the first time for both bands! The last weekend of May they did the live premiere of this song in Japan at FOX_FEST (a festival held by BM) just a few days after the single was released and everyone went wild with this collab, the live version is already out if you don't wanna stop enjoying this song. They played this together once again at Rock Am Ring and the day before at Rock Im Park in Germany twice in the same day, one during EC show and later at BM show. Last month they finished the Europe Tour at Resurrection Fest in Spain playing this collab once again in the same stage twice. The girl in the middle is the lead singer SuMetal and she actually dances less than the other girls (MoaMetal and MomoMetal) because she sings most of the time but regardless she can dance and sing and you won't even notice she's out of breath. About this song: This was filmed in Germany and the concept of the MV is they're breaking boundaries with the genres and they don't care about corporation decisions. The "hips don't lie" is definitely a Shakira reference. The "Fu Fu" part reminds me Backstreet Boys - Everybody female backing chorus but it's also used in Japanese karaoke as well many others songs. I found funny the "push it to the limit" line is used in the Scarface's movie OST, another post disco, dance rock song with some guitar elements. The moment when they're bursting the wall could be an homage to Aerosmith x Run DMC - Walk This Way MV, symbolism of breaking the boundaries with the music genres like I already said. Also one of the singers is holding up the cable with electricity during the breakdown it could be a reference to "The Cable Guy" movie. When I heard the official audio I thought the second "Are you ready?" chorus was MomoMetal doing the backing growling but they didn't show that in the MV, although later fans spotted in the live performance, so it was her after all as well in the third chorus when singing "Everybody". There's probably more references but I'm a little bit far away from pop culture nowadays that I'm probably missing a lot more. Fun fact: EC said in a reactor comment and later at their own reaction video that they did the bursting the walls scene in one shot, there will be a bts so we're waiting for more. The crew had to put all those disco ball on the celling manually just for this song. They met each other last year when BM went to see EC live in Boston and they asked them to work together, this is a 50/50 collab song. Welcome to Babymetal, they are 14-year veterans and are one of the best live bands actively touring on this planet… I mean, really active, they did ~100 shows in ~200 days around the world last year lol. They are not your “traditional” metal, but don’t let that fool you, these gals can go super adorable, or super heavy, or a wide mix of both in between. BABYMETAL are fantastic. They are definitely metal when they want to be. They are also extremely versatile and extraordinarily talented. Give them a chance and you’ll see. If you don’t then that’s your loss.
BABYMETAL are the Godzilla of the Japanese music/metal industry. I would recommend that you start with their more recent music and work your way back to their beginnings. It'll be a fun and fascinating trip through the Foxhole 🦊🤘
Agreed. To be fair, I’ve only heard a little BabyMetal and all I’ve heard was much more in the JPop sound of things. Perhaps a deeper dive is in order. 🤔
I was just going to say it may not be traditional metal but they are metal AF. You want heavy check out megitsune or headbanger live. Or karate and bmc live. They'll melt your face.

Great reaction! I do want to explain why you're seeing such a strong reaction from some of us to "BABYMETAL isn't metal". The band was put together because they felt the metal scene had become stagnant and inaccessible to youth. The name itself is a reference to "the birth of a new metal". The girls are 14 years deep into dealing with, and pushing back against, toxic gatekeepers. I can totally see that isn't you! So yeah, the phrase "they aren't metal" is just a trigger for alot of us, otherwise we're the most chill and supportive fanbase on the planet. I'm just happy you liked it! Trust me... I'd have taken that comment back if I could in hindsight. I've had very little exposure to them and much of what I've heard was similar to this chorus... very JPop with attitude. Obviously I need to dive in with both feet! I'm certainly not the gatekeeper of metal but I can see why it'd be triggering given the history. That said... 14 years?!? They look so young!!!
@@ReactionsThatRock They started in 2010 when the girls were 11-12 years old and their goal at the time was to make metal music that young girls could relate to. So back in the early years their vocals were poppy and were about topics such as wanting chocolate but worried about their weight, or getting ready for school, etc, BUT the music was always heavy AF. As they grew older, the music and lyrics matured too. I really think you would like the songs off their latest album, "The Other One"..."Monochrome" and "Divine Attack" are great songs to start with off that album. For people who love rock, I always suggest "Kagerou" and "Distortion (live at Download UK 2018"..
Oh, Babymetal is definitely metal. One could easily argue whether each of their songs are metal or not. But the girl themselves fit the definition of metal better than most traditional metal bands do. They're literally not afraid to try anything musically. Watching their official video for The One where they're on this pyramid platform connected to cranes way above the audience as it moved around the arena was one of the most metal things I've ever seen. Their stage reminded me a lot of Iron Maiden. I hope you'll try some more Babymetal out. They have a wide variety of music, some you'll probably like more than others. I refused to listen to them for years but after I saw their live video for Headbanger and then Road of Resistance they won me over. Been a fan ever since. Great reaction btw.
Solid assessment. I’ve only seen and heard bits and pieces (and read the old trade magazines) and I think you summed it up perfectly. Their melody definitely had a maiden feel to it. I think I just need to jump down the rabbit hole and hear more!!!

I’ll have to check em out on a stand alone song. I’d seen them at a festival years ago and it sounded more like crunch JPop to me, but they only had a 25 minute set so I’m sure they just did the popular singles.
They did 97 live shows in 25 countries last year. I too missed Blue Ridge @ VIR. But this Nov. they will be in Richmond, VA and Charlotte, NC and a little further north = DC. If you do more BABYMETAL, I am subscribing. 🦊

If no one told you the second "wait a minute" in the "drop growl" is not Kevin it's one of the girls known as Momo Metal she does two more near end "everybody" line. after adding her last year they are incorporating her growls into their sound more and more. Good reaction.
Well it is a basic Formula.You have a Boy theme and a girl theme and in the breakdown both themes Fußes with each other. In this case even Electric Callboy did not know that Babymetal had a growler, so as they realized it Kevin took care of it himself. That even Babymetal was quite shocked. They now started to call it Momos fangs. We will have to see into which directions this will lead them. But it is obvious that Babymetal will be more than Su's Voice alone. And for Momo and Moa it was quite confusing, that someone wanted to dance with them.

What you have to realize is BabyMetal came to Electric Callboys world, and had a lot of fun with it. Baby Metal is metal AF. Check out Monochrome live with Megitsune right after and you will understand.

@@onigiri9964 Actually both and more. Instruments+ melody + singing + song structure. Just "instruments" can result in rock music (and maybe even close to pop music) and not neccessarly metal music. Both bands here, Babymetal and Electric Callboy, are without any doubt very special niche metal bands, that may genrally still be centred in the realms of metal, but definitely with huge overlap with bordering, non-metal genres. And both love to utilize this for their music - rightfully so! I guess to really "judge" Babymetal, you have to check their whole catalogue, find similarities and common elements in their songs and then build your conclusion - which should result in confirming them to be metal (IMO). But don't be too harsh on people who misjudge them, because they only know one or two songs by them - because it is possible to come to a different conclusion, depending on the songs.

And you SOOOO need to check out Babymetal...they can go Heavy, they can go Poppy, they can go Progressive, they can go full on Death Metal... (pick a Metal genre - they go there! I didn’t know they hit #1 but it’s totally deserved. I recorded this 30 days ago and just sat waiting for the copyright claim to drop. The song is STILL stuck in my head! I’ve only been exposed to poppy BabyMetal. I definitely think I need to dig in deeper.

And I think it would behoove you not to say they aren't metal until you've listened to a few of their songs - clearly you are passing judgement based on biased BS you've heard from metalhead purists. Anyway . . . . BABYMETAL has an extensive history (and lore) which I won’t get into but a quick synopsis: they’ve been around since 2010, and started when their lead singer - known as Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) - was about twelve, and the two "cheerleaders" (officially "scream and dance" (backing vocals)) - Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) and Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno) - were both around eleven. And although it is strictly my opinion, I would advise you to not get too caught up in their recent material just yet (aside from "Metali!!" with Tom Morello - last track on the list); they seemed to have lost their kawaii with their last studio album (which tries too hard to be "epic"), and the film editing of their recent concert performances has been, in a word, horrific. Nice reaction. but on this were going to disagree. Babymetal is very much metal. For a guy who says I don't know much about Babymetal and then says they're not metal. You need to listen to way more Babymetal before making a statement like that. And then have to back that up. Just so you know everyone else who did that failed big time. They may not be just one type of metal or the metal the gate keepers like. But they are definitely in the metal camp. While there are those who hate that. Well, that's just too bad. The One could run you lists of songs that prove that is where they belong. And since they have shared the stage with Rob Halford, Korn, Red Hot Chilipeppers, Sabaton, Dragon Force, Polyphia and Bring Me The Horizon. And Now Electric Callboy. Shows where they're at. I’m not surprised. I’ve had very little exposure but I did see them live at a festival maybe 5 or 6 years ago. It was just a 25 minute set and I found it to be Heavy JPop. It was solid though. I can only assume a 25 minute sample is not nearly enough to grasp how awesome they are. 🤘
Not really. A very subjective statement. EC has 6 albums full of metalcore stuff and you'll find pretty heavy stuff in there. You can argue, that Babymetal tends to have metal melodies, that are more classic and lean towards heavy metal or even power metal, while EC has songs more dominant in the realms of metalcore, nu-metal and even death metal.

BABYMETAL IS METAL! just because they arent known for harsh vocals and tend to have a popish sound does not mean they arent metal. Anger Devine Attack If there were no vocals to those songs, there is not a single metal head who would complain or say those songs are not metal, and thats just the heaviest ones.
I saw them do 5 or 6 songs at a festival a few years back and I found it to be quite poppy (even with some serious Maiden style melody). I'm sure there's a WHOLE LOT that I didn't get to experience... so I appreciate your list and will definitely be checking out more!
@@ReactionsThatRock yes they do have a pop sound vocally, the Girls all came from a J-Pop background (there’s too much to write here) but the Musicality and what they do now has really separated from where they came from. Not to Mention Momometal the newest Member does do Harsh vocals on a couple songs including the Second “are you ready” and “everybody” in RATATATA. Overall I just think that the way they look and sound vocally might steer people into thinking they are a pop group with some metal but in reality they are truly a Metal group and have support from some of the most influential Metal Bands out there
BM are MASSIVELY hard/metal compared to ECB - you'll see if you check out anything pretty much live from them :) They created their own genre - still unique after 14 years and utterly unmatched live. You just happen to have run into the most "pop" track I think they've ever done - but it's what worked here. Oh - some of the growls also come from one of the girls - the second "are you ready" when he's holding the wires is not from him ;). Good reaction - and DO check out some live BM (preferably NOT "gimme chocolate")

Yeah I get that… but I also get a dozen trade magazines mailed to my house every month still and most of them have similar takes. Regardless, I’m not a gatekeeper and made an off hand comment based on my limited exposure. What I’d seen to date was more of a crunchy JPop, which isn’t really a bad thing. Still, I’m intrigued enough to dig deeper if I can ever get this chorus out of my head.

I think my opinion is based on a 25 minute festival set I saw them play 6ish years ago. It struck me as heavy JPop… but they only played 7 songs so it wasn’t a solid sampling. 🤷♂️🤘
