Which of these three EVs is your pick and what's the main point that convinced you? What innovations or improvements would you like to see coming on the horizon?
The bz4x is DOA like literally. I told you all before this would happen. I tried to warn you Edmunds but you instead chose to laugh at me and not listen. 😂 Now reality is starting to bite you in the rear end. “Damn naveen was right all along. Can you believe we punished him for it?”
Out of these three it's the ID4 due to price, past history, and quick charging. These are no Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Kia Ev6 though. Those kick these to the curb.
@@Dupont550 Yup, almost everything except rear cross-traffic alerts, radar-based ADAS, labeled buttons on the steering wheel, a quiet cabin, reliable build quality, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM radio, a guage cluster, and a 360 top down camera 😉
The bZ4x is a total failure for Toyota. Underwhelming design, underwhelming specs and now the wheels are falling off. What a shame. If I were Toyota, I'd just kill off the bZ line after this dumpster fire of a vehicle. People who want an electrified crossover from Toyota are better served by the compelling RAV4 Prime instead
Tell me where to put 5 meters cable and if you even have a V-2-L Plug, especially when you have the trunk full? The bZ4x has a poor copy of Peugeot’s dashboard and the steering wheel, but there it fits for smaller drivers and is not made of poor plastics material looking odd. They all three with the same accessories are no competition to the Ioniq 5 or KIA EV6 AWD nor to any Tesla. I even was not convinced of an EQE Mercedes costing more than twice as much with the same equipment on board. Tried also the Ford on my usual test roads and felt not so comfortable on bumpy mountain roads. The Ford is just for American highways a good joice. The Kia‘s setting was done by Alfred Biermann who headed BMW M-Sport for 30 years. The adaptive dampers for example from ZF Sachs are only used by Mercedes AMG and Maserati so far. At quite the same price as a not fully equipped Mach-e the Koreans are another class playing in the league of a Porsche Taycan or the sister model Audi GT e-tron. 😜😎
I’m glad Toyota decided to offer “buy back” on the BZ4X. I was one of the first to buy one here in NorCal. Got my money back and used it to purchase my new KIA EV6 GT Line and I’m very happy with it.
We're choosing to keep it bc we drove a kia and the center console had a lot of play in it. I'm sure once it's fixed we're gonna go back to enjoying it greatly.
The BZ reminds me of Chevy's earliest go at EV's...like a deliberate attempt to make you NOT want a BEV from Toyota...or anyone. Because they're the _hybrid_ guys, and want you to remember that, you silly All Electric kids. And yes, I absolutely do think big manufacturers will design lemons to poison the well in a segment that isn't their bread and butter, or sabotage disobedient engineer's pride with a dud.
Gosh, the bz4x is just so disapointing and ugly. I absolutely hate that steering column design and it makes things so awkward to use. It's far too little too late. An expected showing for Toyota, tough. Their products as of late have been poorly designed, not at all innovatove vehicles that it seems they spent the least amount possible developing, that just don't live up to competitors in almost any category. They get by by their reputation, that's all. Luckily their reputation is great, but anyone who actusally tries a Toyota competitor will be blown away. The bz4x really seems half assed.
Yeah I was very disappointed when I saw the specs. All reviews I've read and watched are consistently, meh. Toyota's lack of commitment to EVs is glaringly obvious with this product offering. Spend less time thinking about hydrogen and reliving your hybrid glory days, and more time with the spec and design for a more compelling EV offering. My last two cars have been Priuses. My next will not be the BZ4X.
Toyota needs a new leader and not my grandfather who was used to horse carriage’s? Actually the are to much bound into former successes with innovative production for mass produce quality. But how comes that bZ4x (what an idiotic name) and Solterra from Subaru kill their reputation with nasty, unfinished cars loosing their wheels?
Toyota was not keen to start producing BEV so early in the first place, so BZ4X is a little bit forced creation to please green-conscious activists pushing industries to jump on BEV production sooner than manufacturers may seen sensible, so BZ4X was very likely not even intended to sell very well, a compliance car for upholding company's green image once producing hybrids does not seem to be enough at the time when Toyota's bet on hybrids finally starting paying off financially on a large scale as Toyota finally offering most models as matured fuel-efficient hybrids not only during urban driving as was the first Prius. Frankly, I think Toyota would probably did better if offered the newest Prius optionally as a fully electric front-wheel power bias car (perhaps with small optional rear motor) as some manufacturers already doing as such solution would likely still have a better range even with a smaller battery due to less bricky shape of Prius compared BZ4X despite the fact that dual option ICE/BEV cars tend to have slightly lower efficiency than cars purpose builld for a single type of propulsion. This would be more than compensated by better price due to the economy of scale of Pruis production and would likely make Prius far more attractive purchase than currently is in times when a large portion of Toyota production is already offered in a similar powertrain configuration. Also not a big fan of fly-by-wire wheel steering without mechanical connection as I personally experienced el. motor for wheel steer assistance suddenly failing while on the road, which may be a rather unfortunate event in BZ4X without a mechanical connection... As for now, BZ4X is in my opinion just a compliance car as were cars from many manufacturers from a decade ago intended purely to meet California requirements on minimum EV production in order to be eligible sell cars within California, this philosophy to do the bare minimum similarly to compliance cars of the past make BZ4X a hard sell, but again, good sales were likely not even purpose of this vehicle in the first place.
@@K03sport Not sure where assembly is, but it seems like a failure in design across the board. The rumor here in Japan is that the new line of Crowns is being delayed by the same issue.
@@K03sport indeed the Solterra in Switzerland cannot be ordered actually. It‘s produced on the same line and just gets other nameplates, so unfortunately two formerly big brands have a problem. I think „grandpa“ Toyoda should make Harakiri or resign, his time is over and they need a new management and not more lousy electric vehicles and „wonder“ batteries that are not available. They where too sure to be #1 for the rest of time for legacy automakers, hoping still to sell to South America or Africa, but the profits come more and more from other markets. Last but not least all Hybrid experience is useless in new EV platforms and change the way they produce now costs a tremendous amount of money which is burned and not earned. That even will be the problem of Toyota and also promising a bunch of new bX cars instead a few that work well e.g. S3XY or upcoming Hyundai Group. By the way also GM and Volkswagen are in that trap. And they all have a problem with products and politics from China.😎
Frunks are such a weird thing to “have to have”. I much would rather a shorter nose to make it easier to drive in tight spaces. IONIQ 5 over any of these for me.
I'm excited about test driving an Ioniq 5 but the dealers in my area are asking $10k over MSRP right now :( At least they're available in limited numbers but man those dealerships are price gouging.
@@trailrunner72 Well, a year+ later (July 14 2024), and we just bought a VW ID.4 for $25200 ($28000 out the door w/ tax, title, reg) after VW discounts and 7500 tax credit (applied at point of sale). We had placed a $500 deposit on a Mach E Standard in September 2022, at $50k MSRP. We waited, and waited, and waited, In March 2023 it was no where ready yet, so we cancelled our order & got our deposit back. We drove our existing car for another year -- March 2023 to June 2024 when we happened to check prices again, and saw how cheap the VWs were. VW was offering $5000 -$7000 off, and dealers were offering $4-5k off. Add in the $7500 point-of-sale tax credit, and we got our car for $25k -- making it $15k or more cheaper than a Mach-E. I did love the Mach-E though.
It looks as if the Toyota bZ4X was in an accident and the damaged panels have been replaced but yet to visit the paint shop. The Venza looks much nicer (if you can find one at a resonable price).
I got the 2024 bz4x, it’s a beautiful car, shipped from Japan. So well built. My husband wants another one. I am not a fan of American, Korean or German cars.
Going forward, it would be nice if your EV tests included charging speeds in addition to your real-world range test. Include both Level 2 and DC Fast Charging measurements. The Toyota has a very slow charge rate, meaning longer stops at public chargers.
You forgot to mention that the Toyota no longer qualifies for the EV tax credit, and when equipped with AWD, it has extremely slow DC charging… over 45 minutes to get to 80%, which makes it DOA for many.
bZ4X was noted has having the best observed efficiency; yet, the mi/kWh itself was never mentioned. Instead, the video focused on range... which makes no sense whatsoever knowing that VW's production of ID.4 for the United States in the United States uses a 55 kWh battery. That is considerably smaller than the 71.4 kWh battery in bZ4X FWD and 72.8 kWh in bZ4X AWD. Again, real-world results for efficiency were excluded. Think about how competitive traditional vehicles became with regard to MPG. Seeing EV efficiency information missing is really disappointing... especially from a source usually highly regarded for thorough reviews.
It's hit. A point with Evs where people want you to mention every little thing about them. The reality is folks arent worried about efficiency. It's still 50 percent more efficient than most ice cars.
Loves the Mustang but hates the price so I placed an order on VW ID.4 Pro AWD. I expected around early October 2022 to get it. Thank you for comparing and pricing.
This seems like a review from last year. The VW is now running an upgraded system. No mention of the Toyota stop sale, recall, and buy back. And what is a review/comparison without any fast charging? I would have loved to know how well the 150 kW front wheel drive Toyota did.
"I would have loved to know how well the 150 kW front wheel drive Toyota did." How? It does not exist anymore! Or does Toyota sell this contraption again?
@@wolfgangpreier9160 The all wheel drive BZ4X is limited to 100 kW charging, and is notorious for being very slow. The front wheel drive model - the model they tested - has a different battery with 150 kW charging. I haven’t seen a test of its fast charging speed yet. I’m assuming this test was done before Toyota recalled all of them and advised not to drive them because the damn wheels can fall off.
@@Hogtown1986 And thats the point where i am getting suspicious. Why in hells name would you call back and even buy back ALL EVs of a certain type - ok its the only one they have "produced" just because some nuts are screwed? Just buy a Polestar 2. Nice car, decent interior, good performance, very good software and no call backs because of screwed nuts. And no: i don't own one. But its obviuous you visitors of Edmunds don't "like" Tesla.
The upgraded 3.1 infotainment system is still poorly designed. I've gotten used to the system, but VW needs some Steve Jobs-like passion for beauty, simplicity, and ease of use.
I find it odd that he mentioned the 1 year of free EVGo charging (which has relatively few "fast" (above 100 kW charging speed) chargers on the Toyota but doesn't mention the ID.4 has three years of free Electrify America fast charging.
Every EV review should note whether the car makes heat with a heat pump or a toaster element. Not relevant to CA, but makes a big difference in range in the north.
Hmmmm correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Toyota send out a warning to BZ owners to not drive them out of fears that the wheels may come off?? Guess I'm not understanding why even mention them when they have a serious issue and no path forward for a fix?
I took delivery of one of the 260 bZs before the recall and the 1400 miles we put on the car including a 600mi and 200mi round trip... trip...were great! It might not have the best performance numbers, but I'll bet in 10-15 years we'll see who made the best car. Can't wait to get it back apparently hopefully this month.
Great reveiw but by the way the differnce between the base-base ID4 and base-base Mach-E is $6K and both are around $40k. So while the ID. 4 is cheaper it's not by much.
Oxford Definiton: "a road vehicle with an engine, four wheels, and seats for a small number of people" Yes they are cars. Sorry. If you want to change your language i recommend french!
Good review, but you forgot the most popular EV on the road: Hyundai Ioniq 5. The Mach E has Recall problems with battery contactors and rear room and range is small for its size, the ID.4 has less range and room also, and the BZ4X/Solterra is...well, late to the party (and is an EV after thought). Maybe bring I5 back for a 4-way (but I already know who will win).
Very popular indeed Here are the sales numbers of SUVs of the first quarter of 2022: Hyundai Ioniq 5 7,448 Toyota bZ4X 232 Volkswagen ID.4 1,659 Tesla Model X 7,000 Tesla Model Y 53,000 Pfff.... 😂😂🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣
They all would have been better served had they taken their “normal” cuv and just done an ev version. Instead, they spent all this money developing new interior, exterior styling, etc. Just do ev RAV4, Escape (Bronco Sport) etc. They could sell cheaper and would be more usable & reliable if they shared more with the main platform model.
"Kind of a strange thing for a Mustang." Yup. That's what we've all been thinking since that car was announced. They should have just called it "Lightning" or simply Mach-E and none of these comparisons and criticisms would have been made. The Mach-E is a great car. The Mach-E is a very poor Mustang.
The BZ reminds me of Chevy's earliest go at EV's...like a deliberate attempt to make you NOT want a BEV from Toyota. Because they're the _hybrid_ guys, and want you to remember that, you silly All Electric kids.
Anyone know what the resale value will be, say, after 5 years? Will the original batteries still be strong enough to last another few years or will the depreciation be huge because of having to replace the battery?
I think it has a lot to do with past brand reputation. Ford always sells for a lot less. Toyota holds good value. VW is about average resale value. The batteries typically at 10 YO are warrantied to be at 80% or greater of original value. So, think 100 miles new at 10 years it would be 80 miles. I assume it's no different than a combustion powered car. As those age there are more things that can break or go wrong so value goes down with age and miles. These should be the same.
Probably darn good based on evs holding their current values. Don't forget the U.S. federal ev battery warranty of 8yrs or 100,000 miles minimum coverage. That bumps to 10yrs or 120,000 miles in Cali. After 2025 the standard changes again so that all states and evs sold here in the U.S. require a 10yr 120,000 mile warranty in ev pack coverage. 🤔
@@jacobbwalters8133 yup they are not which is why for the average family it's a terrible financial decision to buy a car that with taxes and interest is close to the median annual income.
Gas guzzler? I get more and or about the same range with my 2011 Subaru Forester with a manual as these do. And I got the best all-wheel drive on the planet. These cars are nothing but a fashion statement. Like the new electric Lighting it's for people who want a truck but don't want a truck. If I wanted something that got GOOD range I'd go find a used well kept TDI Jetta wagon with a 6 speed manual.
On just how many gallons of non renewable particulate emitting petrol fuels? These cars all only have the total energy capacity onboard to 2-2.5gallons of gas. Gas is listed at 33.7kwhs of total useable energy per gallon. I'd bet your Subaru goes just 15-25% of the range per gallon as any of these can go. 🤔
@@4literv6 The raw materials for making the car have to be mined, and the process of mining creates a lot of greenhouse gases. Then the raw materials have to be refined before they can be used, which again emits more greenhouse gas. Soooo
@UCwygtV34RiWsiZonWuMGvLg same as a gas car then right? What about all that cobalt the fossil fuel industry consumes, are you even intelligent enough to realize they consume the 2nd largest annual amount of cobalt for refining? Or that the mettalurgy industry is the 3rd largest consumer of cobalt? What are most cars made out of oh yeah it's metals. 😀 Then there's the water and electricity used at every refinery just to turn crude oil into barrels of petroleum products that can actually be sold and burned. But wait? We had to find that crude oil right. We had to drill/frack&extract it. All of that used energy and created emissions. Then the crude has to be transported from the wells to those massive refineries. That uses energy to. Once refined those 300#barrels of crude only yield about 33 gallons of various useable products. Those have to be moved again right? Can't just sit at the refinery afterall. So more energy to move them via trains, trucks, massive pipelines or even ships again. All of that is causing more noise heat and particulates from the combustion engines moving it. Plus accidents, deaths, spills etc. Except pipelines of course, those suck down mwhs of electricity to push billions of gallons of different fuels around every country. 👍🏻
@@4literv6 yet your still okay with with the greenhouse effects created by creating batteries If you REALLY want to be mad at someone be mad at the people who fight push back electric trains/ solar power, etc.
But it doesn't qualify for the $7,500 credit, which makes the entry-level ID.4 about the same price. For that you get rear-wheel drive, far more refinement and much better styling, inside and out.
Um this comment is a bit misleading. The recall states that their is a possibility that the wheels may fall off due to hard braking or heavy cornering. However, there has been no reported instances of the this happening.
@@CarStory Seriously??? Toyota is concerned about the safety of it's customers unlike Kia and Tesla which has reputation for spontaneously combusting. Because Toyota cares the company suggests that it's customers do not drive the vehicle until the issue is resolved. @@romairoblackstock5100 You're right. Don't know why people are saying "the wheels are falling off." But Toyota needs to come up with a fix. The cars have been off the roads for months now. They need this car out on the road and people buying it.
Have the ID4. At the time did test out the Mach E. It was fast and fun. But find the suspension too bumpy for my taste. One pedal driving got me to the point where I hit my head on the steering wheel. And a bit expensive. The ID4 is fine. Do wish they could’ve come with the AWD version from the getgo. Just now waiting on the update 3.0. I do like the massaging seats! Just not sure why they don’t put ventilated seats. I don’t really have the problem with the glitch of the infotainment as it works fine for me. The Hyundai and Kia twins they look great and all. But when I was test driving it, it feels like if I was just test driving my own ID4. Didn’t really wow me to the point where I wanted to trade the ID4 in. The range is great don’t get me wrong. But I’m a bit disappointed especially the Ioniq 5 interior where I thought there should be a bunch of soft tough surfaces but there isn’t. Not to mention how turn off I was with the dealer markups. The Toyota is definitely a bit bland and not to mention wheels falling off. Like cmon Toyota. But now, definitely can’t wait for the Lyriq and Blazer EV!
How can someone hit his head on the steering wheel? If i sit down and am buckled in i can not in any perceivable way hit the steering wheel with any part of my upper body or my head!
The lighter interior is a winner. If you put your 3 vehicle pictures side by side the lighter interior looks bigger and you can actually see all the nooks and crannies. Families do not want all-black interiors where junior can hide disgusting stuff. The jetblack reflecting on your eyes is a glaring example of designer's addiction to black.
What a disappointing "It's fine..." tag line for an EV made by the world's largest car manufacturer with decades of battery-hybrid knowledge... It's almost as though they didn't WANT to have to make an electric car, isn't it...??? What a surprise... NOT... 🤣
I can't believe that Toyota let that car out of the stables with the name BZ4X. Truthfully I won't even read material about this car. Come up with a new name and I might take a look.
The Model Y is good at 2 things: Software and fast charging stations. But for people who want things like rear cross-traffic alerts, radar-based ADAS, labeled buttons on the steering wheel, a quieter cabin, better build quality, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM radio, a guage cluster, 360 top down camera, the $7,500 tax credit, or to not be the Camry of EVs, it wouldn't even be on the list
I'll be honest I am so disappointed with the ID.4. It had a great goal of competing with the regular compact/midsize crossovers and I was rooting to it to he a good, boring EV to commute in. But the stupid infotainment trying to be futuristic just damn ruins the whole experience of the car. Not to mention having 2 buttons for the 4 windows that you toggle with a capacitive touch button that gives no feedback. VW was so close to making a good car and then shot themselves in the foot
Been driving our ID4 AWD for 3 months. It's anything but boring. If you feel the RWD is boring you need to try the AWD. Infotainment is slow to start up sometimes, but it really doesn't bother me much once it start working. Also I use Android Auto most the time so it doesn't matter to me. The only time I use factory infotainment is when I adjust the AC or checking on battery etc. Yes, there's A LOT to be desire for this system, especially coming for the easy to use Hyundai system. However, it really doesn't bother me on a daily driving basis. Window control can be annoying if you constantly roll down your window or sit people in the back. Our car usually just sit 1-2 people so it's really not an issue for me. Only rolled down the back window once for the dogs for the 3 months of ownership.

I drove an ID.4 and found it a perfectly nice car. Didn't care for the controls and infotainment but it was comfortable and pleasant to drive with a nice interior and good roominess. The MME was much more appealing however. The Toyota/Subaru EV is just a poor first effort.
Id4 is much better with the latest software that isn't shown here. Toyota couldn't even keep the wheels on the BZ4X. Mach E is pretty solid, but there have been some teething issues as well.
This is a paid Toyota ad trying to make the BZ4X look better than the trash it is. Dude says it doesn’t need to be weird and out there, but that’s literally what its styling is - very out there. Slow, slow charging, low range… it’s just a subpar EV.

Because you don't understand simple economics. If you did? You'd know over 80% of all new car buyers are homeowners with well into the 6 figures in combined incomes. Which is why the average new car sold without markups this year is over 48k. If you could actually do a total cost analysis competently? You'd also know a 46k tesla model 3 over 60months is even cheaper to own than a Toyota Camry costing 30k. For 2021 the average toyota Corolla sold for more than 31k. 👍🏻

Yeah but it's also more 40% more expensive than these models so not an apples-to-apples comparison. A better Tesla comparison are EVs from Audi, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes.
@@trailrunner72 wrong on all levels. None of these will be earning credits anymore under the ira. Toyota already hit the phase out selling hybrids.
