"Evil Woman" by ELO was written by Jeff Lynne. Lynne wrote the song quickly when their album 'Face the Music' was almost complete but he didn't have a lead single.
Lynne said, " I wrote the song in a matter of minutes. The rest of the album was done. I listened to it and thought, 'There's not a good single.' So I sent the band out to play a game of football and made up 'Evil Woman' on the spot. The first three cords came right to me. The quickest thing I've done. We kept it slick and cool, kind of like an R&B song. It was inspired by a certain woman, but I can't say who!! She appeared a few times in my songs" Lynne described the structure saying it has "receptive cord sequence and then the melody turns into a chorus."
When released in late 1975, the song reached the Top Ten on both side of the Atlantic in early 1976.
The lyric "There's a hole in my head where the rain comes in" is a tribute to The Beatles song "Fixing a Hole"
In 1978, ELO were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In 2017, ELO members Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, Bev Bevan and Richard Tandy were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for their 'boundary breaking approach to rock'.
In 2023, Jeff Lynne was inducted into The Songwriters Hall of Fame.
