Out of the blue was my first ELO album, Christmas present 1978, my all time favourite ELO album, and JUNGLE is one of my favourite tracks from this outstanding album

1~ Out Of The Blue 2 ~ A New World Record 3 ~ Face The Music Discovery Eldorado and Time are very close. Jeff Lynne's catalogue of music is absolutely incredible. The man really is a genius.

Out of the Blue was my first album of any band. Got it when it came iut. Still have the same copy and plays perfectly to this day. Arguably my favourite album of all time, by anyone. But I also love Time which altjough is quite different is a masterpiece. I agree with your top 5, and like you I vould have these 5 in different order from day to day. For me the weakest by far is No Answer. Wasnt a big fan of Zoom when it came out, but it has grown on me a lot over the years and I now play it a lot. 1. Out of the Blue 2. Time 3. A New World Record 4. Face the Music 5. Eldorado 6. Secret Messages 7. Zoom 8. On The Third Day 9. ELO 2 10. Balance of Power 11. From Out of Nowhere 12. Alone in the Universe 13. No Answer 😊

Very nice ranking video, excellent presentation and knowledge about the albums, thank you! I haven't heard all of the studio albums, but from the ones I have ( about six or seven ) my favourite has gradually over, errr, time, become Time 😁 Out Of The Blue served as my introductory record to the band and it's no doubt my second favorite.

Great video, Andy! Like a lot of the back story you're adding with each album. Best video on ELO album ranking! Did you know "Do Ya" from New World Record used to be old demo from The Move which Jeff Lynne resurrected for ELO's NWR album recording sessions? Cheers

Hi Kevin, thanks for your kind comments. It's great when someone gives me positive feedback, makes it all worth while! Yes I knew of the Move track as I started listening to them quite early on after I discovered ELO. ELO also used to play DO Ya live before ANWR was recorded as part of a melody with 10538 Overture!

Aquí en Chile 🇨🇱 ELO es una de las bandas favoritas. del rock británico🇬🇧su álbum más famoso en South América (Argentina,Brasil,Uruguay Perú,etc.) con seguridad es el álbum Discovery de 1979. Se desprenden de ahí hits. cómo "Last Traín to London","Confusión" "Midnight Blue" "Dont bring me down" "Shine little love""I nerd her love" "On the run" Wishing". Greeting from Santiago de Chile.

Another excellent video, Andy. Again, we disagree on a few. I would have Balance of Power and On The Third Day much higher while Discovery would be lower. In answer to your question, did the ELO Megamix from the 12" of Getting to the Point ever get a CD release?
@andysvinyl1565
@andysvinyl1565 2 года назад
Hi Richard, thanks for your comments, no I do not believe the ELO Mega-mix ever got any official release on CD. Jeff does not regard it as canon. Epic apparently released it without his permission!

Forgot Discovery when doing my list, I'd have it at 7a, between Zoom and On the 3rd Day.

Great list, Andy! I always love to see ELO2 rated highly. Just curious, have you heard From Out Of Nowhere and where would you place it?
@andysvinyl1565
@andysvinyl1565 4 месяца назад
Thanks for your comments, yes I do have a copy of Out of Nowhere but TBH I would have to re listen before passing final judgement! However it’s difficult to think that I would place it anywhere other than low as everything post BOP is essentially a JL solo project and therefore outside the scope of this video.

I know all ELO- albums in period 1971- 1986, They are so different in the style, so it i hard to list the from the best to the worst. But here is my list : 1. A New World Record 2. ELO 2 3. On the Third Day 4. Eldorado 5. Face the Music 6. The First Album 7. Out of the Blue 8. Discovery 9. Time 10. Balance of Power and 11. Secret Messages. Two comments, Out of the Blue was overproduced but contained good songs for a single album. And Secret Messages, planned double would have been in my list at the eighth position. And plus extra Xanadu of the ELO side was better than the Discovery album.

Hi Jussi, thanks for sharing your list, it's interesting that you have placed ELO's earlier albums higher up your list than mine but still have ANWR as your number one!

Thankyou for the review - very interesting. I agree with your ranking of 'Out of the Blue' as number 1. Even though I got into ELO through 'A New World Record' as a 11/12 year old back when was it was released, the following album just gets ahead of it. There's not a bad (let alone average) song on the double album. However, Livin' Thing is my favourite song period - it has sentimental value being the first song of ELO that I got to know. Like you, I am less keen on their newer stuff, apart from the Time album. Enjoyed hearing your review...

Don't bring me down, number 3 XANADU number 1. ELO'S only number 1 which is a shame because they are a outstanding group in my honest opinion and I've been a massive fan since 1978 when i first heard sweet talkin woman, and bought out of the blue followed by the entire back catalogue

I always loved ELO but was disappointed with all the albums after Out Of The Blue. I thought Discovery was their worse album other than Balance of Power. It sounded thin and weak compared to Out Of The Blue. They just started giving in to current music trends and Lynne got rid of the string section and choir which made them unique. I do not think any of their albums were bad though. I also would have left out ELO Pt. 2 as I consider them a separate band, and the last three ELO albums were not ELO but Jeff Lynne solo albums. I always forget about Xanadu, but I thought those songs were a bit watered down. Eldorado was always my favorite and you hit the nail on the head with that one. I also could still hear the string players on that album and not so much afterwards. I remember reading a long time ago that the string players actually did not play on the studio albums from Face The Music through Out Of The Blue, but do not know if that is true. Also, on Can't Get It Out Of My Head, you can hear part of the melody of Over The Rainbow on parts of it and thought Mr. Kingdom may have been The Wizard!! lol. Why not? Dorothy's slippers were on the cover!! I would rank the ELO albums in this order: 1. Eldorado 2. A New World Record 3. Out Of The Blue 4. Face The Music 5. Time 6. ELO 2 7. On The Third Day 8. Secret messages 9. No Answer 10. Discovery 11. Balance Of Power

Hi, thank you for your reaction, our top 5 appear to be consistent, I agree that after OOTB Discovery was a bit of a let down. I believe that the string players were involved in studio (at least for some of the time) up until ANWR. OOTB marked their departure (despite appearing in the credits they didn’t use their instruments!) However I heard that Melvyn Gale was around the studio and contributed Honkey-Tonk piano at the beginning of Wild West Hero as Jeff couldn’t get it right. Andy

ELO' s Eighties albums are as great as their Seventies material. " Time" is magical and very mysterious, I love the SM double album version ( which was released in 2018), and there are some fantastic tracks on BOP, too. I'm glad that Jeff tried out a lot of different things with ELO. Yes, the string sounds made albums such as Eldorado something really special, but do I really need them on every album? No. ELO wan't just about using strings. There was a lot of experimentstion, and why do people always overlook the fact that synthesizers and electronics played a significant role since ELO2. " Discovery" is the all-time fav album by electronic music maestro Jean Michel Jarre.

Interesting list, you put ANWR as 1 and ELO2 as your second choice despite both alums being very different in sound and style. I see your list is top heavy with the earlier progressive albums despite your number one choice. I’m presently getting back into the progressive era, once again listening to OTTD & Eldorado. It’s refreshing sometimes to hear the actually string players (double tracked!) and remind myself what a great progressive live act they must have been. Cheers Andy
