-- 2009 Ford Escape electric power steering unit has a relay board. When the relay gets old, then it only works intermittently. Relay board is NOT sold separately. You must replace the whole unit. Junk yards sell them for about $150. They are fairly easy to replace .... If steering doesn't work. Turn car off. Count to 30. Turn key switch on. Count to 30. Start car. Relay gets slow to click on when old, so go through the starting procedure slowly like described, and often times the relay will kick on.
Thank you so much for posting this video! I had just taken my car to the shop because of the steering wheel and decided to google the issue as I waited and saw your video, but because you mentioned there was a recall, I was able to figure out that my car under recall so I told the shop to hold/stop work on it to take it to Ford. Thanks again!
Thank you so much! We took a road trip from KC to North Dakota, and now driving from North Dakota to Iowa and THIS just happened. Now you can imagine... In the middle of no fun**ing where how scary that can be!
My mother's 2011 Escape did this to me last night after a 45 minute drive on the freeway with no issues. No dash lights came on, no warning. I came up to the freeway exit and was going to turn right and bam! Steering was incredibly HARD, I'm amazed I got home in one piece! I hadn't turned the vehicle off and then on again (like you did in this video), it happened during my drive.
@@harveyib114 Thank you! I had my daughter with me so it was extra scary! I thought the vehicle used steering fluid so I was able to get into the parking lot for Walgreens and bought fluid but then opened the hood to see no steering fluid reservoir and then looked up some info about it. When I started it up again, the steering was fine. My boyfriend sent me your video. We're going to call Ford, my mom has a recall notice about some other part/issue so she's going to bring this up. I also have a Ford 2011 Escape, hers has 6 cylinder and mine has 4 so they are different models. I'm scared to drive either vehicle now, Ford needs to recall all of these vehicles, I could have easily gotten into an accident and am thankful it didn't happen on the freeway >.
I’ve had this issue with a ‘12 Ford Fusion. It was “fixed” under a recall and has happened 4 or 5 times since. Right now it’s sitting at the shop needing a $1200 steering rack replacement.
I have this same issue with my 2011. Now happening frequently. Thank you for this info. I hope you were able to get your vehicle fixed. I will definitely go to my local dealer to inquire about service and make a stink if not addressed. This is ridiculous. It has happened in my car a few times through the last few years but is now a big issue. Happening more and more. It is a real danger. You are driving along and the power steering just stops working. Be careful.
2009 Escape: On 07/2014 Ford dealer performed Open Campaign 14S05 Electric Power Steering "checked for DTC's and reprogrammed the PSCM and IC Module". Mid-2017: Intermittent power steering failure, normally identified when started the Escape. Sometimes power steering returned after restarting. 7/2017: Problem STOPPED after alternator replaced by independent shop (they thought reason was related to better electrical system performance). 8/2018: Intermittent power steering failures returned, with one failure while driving. Have to drive with no power steering when it won't reset. With the number of these failures documented online, amazed no Ford/NHTSA safety recall for Ford to address this!
Same issue here. I paid for the repairs, and 2 months later the same problems re-surfaced. Now, the steering fails when I'm driving, and is progressively doing it more often.
Thanks for the concise and to the point video. I have a 2008 Mazda Tribute with a issue that's behaving a bit differently with the steering. It jerks to the side and there is a dead zone in the middle.
Thanks bro was thinking that but I've changed it 3 times now I'm guessing it's getting changed a 4 time I was a little worried it was the rack this time and thank you for your reply
@@timmydgrows4729 you should be able to tell, if you rotate the steering wheel, there should be no play in the u joints. If the joint itself has play it is bad. Good luck
Thank you! That just happened to me on the way home. I ran for the fluid.... No power steering fluid reservoir in my Escape. Now I know it's electrical.
My pops has a 2012 xlt Escape and just started having issues with his EAPS rack and pinion not returning after a turn is completed as a normal working power steering assembly does. It's not as bad as your situation but still almost caused a couple accidents. Also his was built at the Kansas city plant.
This is the problem I am having now with my 2014 Ford escape titanium. When I turn to the right it feels like the right wheel doesn't turn back as quick as jt should. I thought the lugnuts were loose or something but I checked that and it's fine. The problem is getting progressively worse in the last two weeks. What do you think I should do? I am a single women. I have more knowledge about cars than a lot of women I think (I change my own oil, tires, and can figure out the issues usually) I'm thinking this is the rack and pinion. The steering wheel is also making an obvious rubbing noise when I turn the wheel especially when parallel parking or just straightening out the wheel after pulling I to a parking place, I know it isnt normal. Tha k you for any advice you are able to offer. ✌️
I have a 2009 mercury mariner premier. Same thing as an escape. Having the same issue. Very dangerous. Ford has lost my business FOREVER. I have had so many issues with this vehicle... recalls and things that should be recalls. Thank you for this video.
Tracey Smith this should be reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
Just bought a 2009 Mariner a couple months ago and I would still fall under the recall requirements of mileage and and the year to have it fixed but for some reason mines not on the recall list either. Obviously considering it’s the same issue that I’m having as the ones that were recalled it should be covered. I can’t afford to fix it so what damage besides it being dangerous to drive could happen if I drive it like this? Mine hasn’t done it while driving it’s like yours in the video it happens when I start it I either have it or I don’t but today when it happened I had it for a couple seconds and the all of a sudden the wheel spun out of my hands like a rubber band unwinding and it was tight again. So frustrating!!
I had this problem fixed by my Mechanic, he did it, and it was very difficult to align properly. He had to get another sensor. Big question: Will this be permanently aligned? I am afraid that when I drive the car, it will suddenly freeze or turn to full left or right when I am driving, especially during high speed.
I'll NEVER purchase another Ford Motor Company product ever again. They quoted me $1500.00 for a new electric steering rack because Ford refused to honor their product with 50K miles on a bad power steering issue.
2011 Ford Escape - I was just quoted $2400 - they won't honor because the even though it was produced at the Kansas City Plant - they say he wasn't built in the time frame they they suggested - ended September 2010...so if 2010 is when they produced the 2011, I am completely stumped as to why my 2011 isn't covered under the recall. Always thought a recall was a recall.
Had the steering rotation sensor replaced and computer module reset and the power steering is still out. They did a diagnosis and said the whole steering column needs replaced. Anyone have ideas?
Have an issue with my 09 mariner premier. Loud clunking/clicking noise while driving and making a turn. Replaced rack and pinion, cv shafts, stem joint, that sensor you shown and still cannot figure out what the issue is.
Did this part fix the issue? I’m looking to fix it man cause it happened on the way to work . Definitely don’t have the budget for a new car so I’m kinda stuck having to fix it
Yeah my power steering 2009 Ford escape does exact same thing but mine's not from Canada I don't believe. Does it matter how long I've had it before I can take it and they fix the problem or
My power steering goes stiff on me randomly while I'm driving it's very scary but my escape is 2011 so there is nothing I can do about it I think we'll I mean as far as the recall any advice would be great
So did u get it fixed? I’m also having that issue with mine right now... I was able to unlock it but it finally locked up after a couple of weeks of doing that.
My feh 2008 just did this to me today! But I don’t have any engine light on or anything pops up. It also doesn’t have any noises. Mine is also from the Kansas City plant same sticker like this guy. My battery is also low too but what can I do to fix this issue! I got school and work to get to Mann!! Can anyone help me
My 2009 Ford Escape is doing the same thing. They said there is not a recall for this problem on mine. My throttle body went out but they wouldn't fix that because even though it's recalled I'm over 150,000 miles. Something else is saying to check fuel Inlet which might mean that the purge valve is bad. I also have a oil leak and my oil light is on. I have not had this vehicle for one full year yet and I have had nothing but problem after problem. I I have always heard bad things about Ford and I guess I just had to see it for myself! By the way these problems are not only on the Ford Escape I've heard similar problems are also on the Ford Explorer, the Mercury Mariner, Ford Fusion, Ford Flex, Ford Edge, and probably some other cars that I can't remember. I would be very careful before you buy any Ford products!
Well today I reached my boiling point, I have a 2009 Ford Escape. In my case I did get the letter for the recall about the electric power steering. I took the car in October because they send me a second letter advising me to take the car to a near dealership, telling that if an accident occurred without this taking care, I will be responsible. Since second letter was more aggressive make me worried and I took it. Well they call me 3 hours later telling me that my car was ready. I ask if they took care of the recall and they told me yes. Couple weeks later my car started to act up out of nowhere it started to shake on the steering wheel, but stop by about 3 days later. in the middle of march the shake started again and was at all times this time. I start to look into it and research the problem and find out that it was the power steering. I went back to the dealership that suppose fix the problem and when I drop the car I found that they never change anything, what they did was reprogram as they told me, not that I believe it. Well they told me that it need to be reprogram again, so I leave the car again. This time they call me 20 minutes after I drop it, telling me that this time is not part of the recall, that this time is the steering column that's was the reason my steering wheel was shaking. they told me that it will cost me 1200 to fix it. I declined and pick up the car letting them know that I know the real problem. I contact ford and let them know what happened, and they told me that my case with the recall was closed because I took it the first time and my car didn't have the malfunctioning when they check it. I told them that wasn't what they told me at the dealership when I took it the first time. they told me that at the moment when I took it if the car didn't show any problems they just upgrade the code and because it show in their system, my recall case closed. they told me that they will put this into there data system and if it any more problems with more customers they will recall it again. Well the end result is now I don't have power steering in my car because of the recall and ford telling me that sorry for my luck, that I should take the car when the problem was there not when they send me a letter telling me that if I cause an accident they not responsible. Now saying all this we need to get together and with everyone here been together get a lawyer and really make a case. We cannot let ford get away with this. Hope we can do this, I'm willing to spend my time and start a petition that way we can sing and make the difference. I do have paperwork and I been documenting everything including the conversation with the personal of ford. Together we will make ford acknowledge this....
Mar Mer Yes, I am willing. Im glad you recorded the conversation. They need to fix the issue and reimburse those who have paid out of pocket. They are being cheap, stubborn and have no respect for loyal customers. except when they are trying to sell them a car.
How many people in here want to get action about this??? reply and let me know. K Smith have videos that we need to subscribe. I'm also with post a video this week also. find a local news in your area and let them know about us. I'm going to share this in all video related to this problems. call this number 18664367332. This is ford customer relationship center. document the conversation you have with them. even when they tells you you don't have a recall, dont worry this will be prove that they will not want to help. LET'S DO THIS..... TOGETHER WE WILL MAKE THE DIFFERENCE....
I have same issue only Ford Escape 2011 Kansas assembly. Used to only happen when it's hot outside but now its happening regardless of the weather . What did you to fix and what did you change ? How much is the cost ?
I changed the entire steering column. It cost me about $800 USD. I got it at a discount from a friend at Ford. Had I not had that friend it would cost about $2,500.00 USD for parts and labor. Its a Ford only part. You have to buy it at Ford Dealership but you will need to get your own mechanic to install it as for will charge you alot. My mechanic charged me only $200.00 USD to install.
I hear you all. I to have a 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid and the Steering Column is starting to fail. The day I take the SUV in for another issue with the key assembly failure and as I was backing out my garage, bingo, steering reminded me of my Grandparents old 1950s car without power steering. At ford, they conduct Diagnostic and sure enough, $1400 for new Assembly. On ride home, no issues, at Ford, no issues. Steering Column Assembly must not be communicating to axle.
I have that same power steering fault issue happened on Christmas day. It was recalled in 2014 and repaired by the previous owner. They refuse to fix a recall twice and is charging over two grands for repairs
I have 2008 ford escape never got recall letter either. And this just happen to me yesterday as we were driving from Houston to Dallas worth my girls. So the curves were freaking dangerous. Took to a mechanic today said its the stearing module whatever that is said the part jacked up and cost around 200. My stearing wheel also shakes when at a stop. Anyone know how to repair, or who can help this bull
I have the same issue on my 2011 Ford Escape... There is a trick that works for me. I turn the wheel to the left and give some gas while starting and power steering will turn on... I have a lose serpentine belt, maybe it causes something ... Since the power steering is electric I think when I rev up it gives some electric boost than let the power steering start correctly... I have some play in the wheel, I think replacing the U joint can probably help. For others with power steering problems, please know that some people have been able to remove only the power steering motor without removing the full steering column and it has fixed all their problems. Find a power steering motor and replace only that. Don't buy the full steering column. There is a video on RU-vid on how to replace only the power steering motor easily...
Mine started doing it too. Went online and got the recall number called the dealership they said my car is not part of the recall I asked why they give me a number to call I called a Ford representative and they go and they say it's not part of the recall it's happening to my car I don't understand
Hey My 2016 Ford F-150 The Power Steering Assist Fault And Advance Trac Turn On And The Steering Went Completely Stiff I Can Not Steering At ALL! What is the Problem?
Same problem happened with our 2016 Explorer limited. EPAS electronic steering system failure required replacement of entire electronic system rack, cost to replace... $2200.00. Please report this to www.nhtsa.gov. If more people report this issue then perhaps they will issue a recall.
Bro i have a kia it's EPS when I turn little bit for the right side only at a certain angle the steering make unusual sound like something is grinding inside and when i complete turning it the sound disappears, What is the problem ??
My 2008 ford escape just started doing the same thing a few days ago. It came from the Kansas city plant so that means it should be under recall correct? If so what steps do I take to get this fixed?
Kevin Kassinger It being from Kansas plant actually won't guaranteed that it will be recalled. That's what they will tell you. Ford will need your vin number to see if a recalled part was used in your vehicle. Again that's what they will tell you. Call them. If it's under recall just take it to the dealership and they will fix it free of charge which they hate doing.
The steering column is ONLY available from Ford dealership. Nobody else has them new. And I mean no one else. Order it from Ford and have your personal mechanic install it. It's way cheaper. It's only like four bolts holding it in.
I have the same problem you had. Now my trouble is that i cant find the part. I have looked at Auto Zone, Oriley even on Rock Auto is there anything you could suggest me ?
Angelina Hinojosa Yes. I have looked as well and have learned that no one has that part (sterring column) except Ford Dealerships. Which adds to my suspicions and beliefs as to Ford should pay for it and make it a recall. Pretty much all stores have told me they dont carry it and can be purchased only from Ford. A cheaper route is getting one from a salvage yard for about 200.00 but you run the of risk of something going wrong as you dont know exactly which car it came from. Good luck.
I have an 09 scape same color lol it those the same thing the only diffrnces is when am at idle it starts to vibrate if it gets hard like the une in the video I cut it off an let sit for a couple of minutes an it goes bck to normal but I need to fix it if u get eney more info pls share
I have a 2010 Ford escape and the steering panel just failed. It was made in the Kansas plant but I'm being told the VIN # isn't part of the recall. Has anyone made any progress on this issue?
Susan Taylor same issue with my 2009 escape that was also made at The Kansas city plant . I called Ford dealer in NY and one in NJ . Unfortunately my vin is also not part of that recall . 😖
people, at first sorry for my ugly english, but i have a question - i am going to buy ford escape 2010 (y) hybrid ... can someone advise me worth it to buy or not ? :/
I have a 2008 ford escape and this is happening right now to our vehicle, shortly after we bought it we had our steering column replaced, ever since then the blower for the heat and air only works on high, also the wind shield wiper fluid is no longer connected and the radio doesn't work. Never had these problems before they "fixed" our vehicle. We cannot afford to have these things fixed to how they were before it was worked on
I have the same issue, NOT all the time, but when i stop at stop signs some times it does it, i have to turn the car off and back on, I have never really had it do it when i was driving down the road, mostly when it is stopped, and I sure hope it never does do it when i am driving
Samantha Fowler you may have an electrical issue not just the steerig column. Check all your fuses first then go from there. Sounds like an electrical short or some type eletrical issue.
I have a 2012 Ford escape and I'm having this issue but I turn it off and it comes back on just once but I had my windshield replaced that had the sticker for which plant it was assembled at but could it be this issue or something else?
How often does your escape do this. I had this happen to me for the first time this morning. Didnt drive but down the street & brought it back home. When I got home from work I checked it & the steering wheel is fine. I have a 2012 Ford escape but bought it in 2011
This is happening to my escape (2014) and when I called ford, since my VIN doesn’t match up with the recall VINs, it’s all on me. Seriously? Clearly multiple other people are having the same issue, how many people will have to get in accidents before they extend the recall?
My Ford Fusion Hybrid is the same, they say my Vin is not on a recall though the electronic steering assist has gone out twice and has cost a small fortune to fix.
Mine is an 08 escape hybrid.. and all of a sudden the steering shaft assist failure sound came on while I was driving down the highway and went off... then today it just stopped turning completely and locked up absolutely.
same here. now i am thinking that any one who has posted here and read all these statements, if goes to buy a freeking ford again, shame on that person. i have had ford cars about five of them in the past, but this is my word to ford, i will walk but not give a duck to ford. ford is out of laegue . done with ford. give me a ford car and a million dollars, i will refuse to take.
Mine is an 05 with electrical power steering. Unless its refurbished an they messed with the info an turned it to an 05. What im saying is every time mine has had an issue its been a issue newer models have had. Both my front ball joints fell out an almost wrecked. The power steering went out an couldn't find the fluid resivor an found out its electric. An the front brakes get hung up an wont release till its cooled off about twice a month. I need help. Im clueless on these new vehicles these days. Electrical on the motor is bs. I need an older vehicle.
I so sad .. I have the same problem... If someone knows how fix it by yourself send me the link fixing because it too much money if I go to the shop... help people Thanks
My 2010 escape is doing this , did you ever get it fixed and if so how much if it wasnt under warranty , I looked mine up and it has a different recall ..
joe ready I got it fixed myself. Had friend at fors who sold me the part for $800+ regular 1000+ and I had my personal mechanic install it for about 150.00. So I spent a total of like ***$950.00***.
@@miintyfresj4699 it should actually be around $230 for a steering sensor. please look it up and do not spend $1200 on an entire steering column. I would recommend getting ur obd2 scanned, if it says error B2278, it should be just the steering sensor that needs to be replaced. Ford dealerships typically will tell you its the entire steering column but it is not.
I have a 2012 Ford Escape. *Power steering issues *Door latch issues I can definitely relate to this issue. The steering wheel locks up while driving and car has to be turned off and then on again for vehicle to turn in direction driver would like to go. Along with that, these vehicles have door latch issues. The door latch doesn't latch on my car. My door also flys open while driving and refuses to close. It is a shame that 2012 year model has not been recalled as this is the only year that does not have recall for this issue with this Ford model. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY MALFUNCTION.
@@jealkrl7 I ordered a part from Ford and replaced it. However, I still noticed not too long (less than a year later) the steering wheel locks up issue persists.
My truck is doin the same thing wht should I do they said I was in recall but the time went out in 2015 please I need help I just paid it off Jan 10 from American mothers in cahokia I'll only transportation I have help me uotplease
Our 2008 Ford Escape started doing this two weeks ago the first time a light came on and I took it to ford they said the torque sensor was bad replaced it cost me 800 and sent me home a week later this happened to me coming home after having electronic brakes put in for my camper no light no warning just super tough to turn the wheel what needs to be fixed to stop this?
My car is at Ford right now. They just told me that i would have to have a ensor replaced in the steering column to the tune of $900 plus labor. When i arrived the steering was fine just an alert that went off. I have never had any trouble with my steering; however, it has never been able to turn it with just one finger as you show in your video. How do you know if you are a 1 or a 2 for the recall?
If you go have some one read the codes for your car you can find out pretty quick if it's the sensor. also I'm not sure if it happens everytime but your steering wheel while kind of be jittering if it's the sensor. If it is the retaining ring is almost impossible to take off and put on if you don't have the right tools
If your steering wheel jitters back and forth while driving or stationary at a stop with the wheel pointing straight ahead, it’s the torque sensor mounted on the steering column under the dash. If you’re a DIY person, better get the best circlip pliers available that open at least 2 -1/4”. It’s a big ring. I ground a pair of long nose angled pliers to form my own retaining ring remover.
Alot of these issues are actually the Gauge cluster solder connections. The can bus messages have to go through the cluster. If they are delayed or distorted, the epas will error out. To know if it's your cluster, push on the upper right of the cluster while starting the vehicle and see if the power steering returns. If so, then you just need the cluster repaired.
Im having this issue now🤦🏾♀️ And I have the same color too. I was driving when this happened to me. I had my niece in the car with me it was sooo scary 😱my uncle had a Ford Taurus that had a power steering issue like this and I used to park the car for him. If I didn’t know how to drive with this issue I could’ve crashed😱 Can Ford fix my truck with the recall if I have the Kansas Sticker? Thank You for the video.💯
Having this issue right now, had the entire electric steering column replaced 3 months ago and it went out again today. Same thing, no power steering, only manual. $1400 down the drain.
I have an 09 Escape, it's not under recall but I"m having this issue as well. I'm so frustrated, it was fine last week, sigh. but nothing is working, haven't gotten it to turn enough for me to even drive it - if I were the Hulk, maybe, lol
smart choice. 3 fords, 1 mercury (same thing isn't it?). Mother owned 5. Not once using 8 vehicles inside of one families experience has the Ford motor company designed an automobile without constant electrical issues. Henry Ford should have stuck with the reliable model T.
I have a 2009 Mercury Mariner, just reached 151,xxx miles and mine is doing this :( mine would work for a while and then go out. Now it's completely out
I have a 2012 ford escape xlt and i went to start it last night and out the blue this started happening. It just out the blue the wheel was hard to turn
Good luck I thought with the Ford and the national transportation safety that does the recalls and he told me in a nice way go screw myself all day on the phone with Ford and people that put out the recalls best of luck for a lawsuit good luck they have too many loopholes so Ford is protected and they’re not liable do you have a look up your vehicle and make sure it’s not made in that plant pretty much it’s a simple fix if it does it intermittently clear the codes and re-calibrate it with a scanner not just any scanner advance pro scanner just got function testing recalibration abilities
