We retrofited an electric power steering motor from a toyota prius into a 64 ford pick up. This video gives you a step by step guide on how we did it.

your issue will be the shift linkages will not be able to pass through the space where the Prius motor resides. You’ll have to go with a floor shift of some type
@christopherjpeters
@christopherjpeters Год назад
It already has a 4 speed floor shift But yes your right this wouldn't work with column shifter.

I am going ahead with this project. I have a 1967 Ford F100 4 speed 352. Is there anything that you can think of that would prevent this from working if I installed it the opposite way? The clutch and brake mechanism prevents me from installing it the way you put it in. If I install it "backwards" and put it in front of the dash essentially between the dash and steering wheel, it is not as "aesthetically" pleasing but the EPS motor fits pretty well and I can essentially use the column mounting bracket to clock it in.
@christopherjpeters

That should work there too. Your right it might not look pretty and that's why we choose the spot we did. Plus we were able to integrate it with the mount for the steering column. The measurements in my video are going to be all different for you too.

Your steering wheel has to be on the same side otherwise your tires would be getting the power to turn the steering wheel and it would probably rip out of your hands.

Project completed. I ended up installing it on the engine side of the firewall. I had to cut the opening in the firewall a little. Secured it to the inner fender wall using a u-bolt and filled in around the firewall opening with foam insulation. Put the control box under the dash. Works great.

We considered that as well but didn't like the idea of cutting into the fire wall after we painted it. I'm glad it worked out.

great info vid! but, do you NEED to use the part that adjusts steering effort, or can you just run it at a constant ?

You dont you can run without it. There is default setting.

Hey Chris, you mentioned a deuce and a half, do you think this would work for that application? I’m about to try myself which is how I found your channel. Let me know your thoughts on this! Thanks I appreciate any insight you can give.
@christopherjpeters
@christopherjpeters 3 месяца назад
I am not sure if the Prius motor can handle the duce and a half. That's quite a bit heavier than the Ford pick up. However it is just a motor assisted application. If you keep the large steering wheel in place it may help.
@KelRay1
@KelRay1 3 месяца назад
Being that it’s going to be altered and still be a straight solid shaft just like the original, that’s the thinking of a few people, it’s only meant to help lighten the steering, not actually do the steering. If the motor fails, you still have a solid shaft to steer with. And yes, definitely keep the original size steering wheel. An adapter would probably need to be made to size it down to the Prius shaft. Oh, and Saturn Vue EPSA units are readily available.
@KelRay1
@KelRay1 3 месяца назад
Oh, and it’s not a motor cross event so the motor should not be overworked with turning back and forth. Any further thoughts? Worst case I finish converting to hydraulic power steering.

So you used the prius unit? Did the bruno box actually change the ammount of assist it provides? I cant find any post anywhere saying that the Prius controller that Brunosteering sells actually works. Allni find is that it does not work. Doing this to my 69 mustang. Thanks and great video!
@christopherjpeters
@christopherjpeters Год назад
Yes, we found that it does actually work but there seams to be a delay connecting to GPS. After a while we ended up removing it and leaving it at the prius default 40% and it works pretty good that way.
@jerrycordova1971
@jerrycordova1971 Год назад
@@christopherjpetersoh it did work?! So without the controller at a stop on the "fail safe" mode, can you turn wheel easily? And how much of a delay for the GPS unit to start working?
@christopherjpeters
@christopherjpeters Год назад
Yes it works fine. The delay on the GPS depends. Sometimes there is none and sometimes it's like a minute or two. We just found it un reliable. I probably should have added it in the video but did realize it until a few days later.

Frat tips. I am glad I read your comments. I had concerns about return to center issues. I’ve been considering for my 64 c10 Chevy and was looking into the gps signal but seems like it might be best to just go without that.

Is it possible to have this work with a three speed column shift?
@christopherjpeters

I don't think so. The only reason we were able to pull this off is because this truck was converted to floor shift.
