I just built this exactly based on your design. I even "tried" to think of a way to improve it based on my criteria of efficiency, as I do with everything I fabricate. I couldn't come up with a better design. I imagine that's why your video is the only one that pops up. Only thing I might add is rings or hooks for the straps. I'm using it for tree work so I have to move it around more often. Good job and thanks!

Excellent solutions to hauling and lifting in many places. I’ve been thinking about this for tree pulling, vehicles, boats etc. What I like about this is portability, speed of winching and deployment. Congratulations, I love this ideas, thanks for sharing, God bless from the sunny side of the pond 😉

Thanks for the video info. I'm using it to load my powered wheelchair in back of my van. Before my accident I was 6`- 5" and 250 lbs. The winch lifts the 90 lb. Heavy duty chair, then my friend and I made a sliding dove tail slide to push the chair in, lower it and done and on my way outdoors in my all terrain powered wheelchair.

Good design, I made a modified version. Didn't use square stock, used round for the sides to reduce forces exerted on corners of yours, also flat bar bridged closer to the receiver...this ensures more welding to receiver and side bars for added stability and strength. I'm pulling stumps with an 8 to 1 pulley setup, 32k lbs max distributed. Only done a test run on smaller butterfly bush....pinched the winch cable but it does work great. Might replace with synthetic rope.

Fyi, you will never need to worry for pulling a deer but if you start pulling heavy loads using a bolt like that to secure the tube to the mount can shear off the bolt. Pins are surface hardened and much less likely to shear off. jist a notr fellow DIYers

Very nice video I seen so far! Ive been searching the web for this kind of application with the winch used solely by battery. I just bought one and trying to use it to pull 3-4 sacks (50kgs) per load from a hill like 80m down in a slide or cart. I also need to transport like 30 sacks (One time in a day). Here is my question, really appreciate if you could response.:) 1. How long was your continuous pull with it? Can the winch work like at least 20m straight? 2. How long you used the battery while continuously pulling? I am thinking to respool the rope with 4mm which could reach like 30m, considering only pulling not too heavy loads (I think). Sorry for lots of question, but really appreciate your feedback. :)
@PhilCrockett
@PhilCrockett 3 месяца назад
Those are very good questions. 1). My continuous pull was the length of the cable in the spool. I really don't know the exact length.. The Winch wood rest for a little bit when I would re-extend the cable to my rope for re-hooking. I believe that was long enough of a rest, because it took me at least 30 to 45 minutes to get my dear from the bottom of the hollow to the top of the Ridge. I also used it recently to pull a woodstove (on a 4 wheel dolly) up a hill from the backyard to the front driveway and then up a ramp onto the trailer. Once again, I would have to stop to draw the cable out and re-hook to the rope. This was probably an hours worth of use with probably 5-10 minutes of rest in between. 2) I'm not sure what you mean by how long do I use the battery? It's the only way to operate it so the battery is in use the whole time.. Hope this helped

I suggest drilling an extra pair of holes in the receiver tube in the other sides. Then it wouldn't matter which direction you use the winch mount. You could also use a hitch pin instead of a bolt. Pick one with a big red handle so it is easier to find if you drop it. You know Murphy is going to be involved sometime.

This is great!!! I need something like this to pull my pontoon boat out on to the shore each fall. I am not mechanical and will not be welding any time soon. Do you think the PVC Tree Mount from amazon PVC-1263 will do the trick. It looks exactly like what you did. But, they seem to only recommend it with a honda gas winch which caps out at 2200lbs. I would like to get a winch at 4-5k lbs. Do you think the PVC-1263 will work?
@PhilCrockett
@PhilCrockett 4 года назад
Not sure if that Pole Mount would work or not. It all depends on the weight and drag / friction of what your dragging the boat over.... also grade of the bank. I once had this idea about being able to launch a boat without a boat ramp. I could make long runners (kind of like atv ramps) that would connect to the rear boat trailer and end up in the water. Then.... I would winch up on the trailer. thought about rollers vs carpet surface.....anyway...Still working on that one in my head. My point... is.... it's kind of the same thing. There are a lot of variables that you have to figure in. or...... just trial-n-error.... you could just simply put a log chain around the tree, and hook to the base of the winch somehow.

This is a clever implementation. I was working on something similar except I wad trying to figure out how to get around the 50ft cable length issue. I think the winches have a limiter and are not continuous run. It you had continuous run, you could wrap the end of say a 300ft rope twice around the take up wheel much like the crab trap pulled the have on "the deadliest catch" where the rope reels of the back of the wheel ass new route is taken up in the front. This way you don't have to keep going up and down every 50 feet.
@PhilCrockett
@PhilCrockett 6 лет назад
I thought long and hard about this issue as well. It's really the only flaw in this idea, but walking back and forth 2 or 3 times is WAY easier than dragging a deer up hill. I even thought about making a 4 wheel low-rider cart (kind of like a creeper but only with large wheels) and mount the winch on the front of it. then i would just simply pull the whole load in that fashion. I'm still thinking about how to improve it. That's part of the fun. Thanks for the comment, I enjoyed the idea!

I've been looking into a drill winch for the same purpose. I have a spot I hunt that the deer has to come up a steep hill. I can drag it if my friend is there to help but if I'm by myself it would be impossible. I thought about doing this method but with a boat winch. Its public land so I can't leave anything there it would have to come in and out with the game cart.

Have used a gasoline winch for several years but it is rated 2000 pounds. I removed the steel cable and replaced it with 3/8” rope. Strap it to my deer dolly. This drill winch is so much lighter. Made by Warn. I got mine at AutoZone $199. And purchased a Dewalt 1800 rpm drill and two batteries. $159 at Rural King. I now use a jet sled instead of the dolly. It works much better. Great idea! Thank you for taking the time to put this excellent summary together. Have you used it to pull heavier loads than a deer? I'm wondering if the portable battery set up would allow enough power to pull a vehicle out of a ditch or similar application.
@PhilCrockett
@PhilCrockett 6 лет назад
The only thing I've pulled that was "heavier of a load" was a big dead branch that was hung up in a walnut tree. I tied on and ripped it from the trunk with this winch. As far as using it for a vehicle, you would have access to a real battery under the hood if you rigged the wires right. It would be interesting to test a load like this on a ATV battery though. I hope I never get in the situation to know if it works! If you ever try it, please let me know.

I suggest starting the truck before winching so it will never be an issue. Drawing down truck batteries isn't good for them. If you need portability you can use a quality (not the Schauer junk Walmart sells) jump start pack. I've used my JNC 660 to run my much heavier Ramsey winch for short periods before I wired it in. I've had it for years after using one every day at a used car lot. You can recharge 'em off your cigarette lighter too.

Just the solution I was looking for, how is that working out for you? Does the battery have a shorter life with it being constantly drained? Or does it go on a permanent trickle charge?
@PhilCrockett
@PhilCrockett 6 лет назад
I made this strictly for pulling deer out the hollows that I hunt, so really haven't used it much since deer season. I did pull a huge dead limb from a tree not too long ago with it. So it's working out great. As far as charging.... I usually put it on trickle charge in my barn. However, right now it's sitting on a wood shelf and I haven't had to use it to know if it's still charged. If it doesn't last until next deer season, then I'll buy another one. Pretty cheap when comparing it to back or knee surgery which is what I'm trying to avoid by using this thing. Thanks for the question and feedback. So glad you like my idea.

HA! I'm not in the welding-for-hire business. I'm more of a hang-out-with-my-buddies-in-the-shop-and-weld type of guy. Love playing in my shop. There are a lot of guys out there like me. get to know one and I bet he'd even teach you how to weld. Thanks for the feedback, John. I'm glad you like my idea. Please share my video with your friends. Better yet.... drop the link of social media and ask if there's anyone in your life that could help you with this project.

Get it done by a fab shop with a liability policy, because no one in their right mind makes such things for sale without insurance coverage. Instead of a portable 10K winch (giant hassle to move and power with zero benefit) I use chains and snatch blocks to guide the winch cable from my truck. It's easy to extend a truck winch with a second cable and appropriate fittings if you max out what's on the spool. I unreel the cable, rig to the snatch block or blocks and apply force where I want it. Snatch blocks let me stay well away from the axis of falling trees etc. The Army rigging manual is available free online (it's public domain and your taxes paid for it). Study rigging and you'll do a lot less grunt work.

How far can you pull a deer on your battery before it dies?
@PhilCrockett
@PhilCrockett 10 месяцев назад
I'm not real sure about that. I've never had one die on me. I've pulled deer out of very deep hollows where you can see the tops of trees. From the depths of those hollows to the top of the ridge.

@@PhilCrockettmost winches have a recommended duty cycle of around 15 seconds then you're supposed to cut it off and let it cool for a few minutes. I honestly don't know of anyone that does that though. From a mower battery you should be able to run it nonstop for about 2mins before depleting the battery. But you'll be out of cable to pull in before that happens.

How long does the batter last before you have to charge it??
@PhilCrockett
@PhilCrockett 5 лет назад
I've never used it long enough to run it down to know. I charge it overnight, take it with me, usually pull 2 or 3 deer up out of the hollow, and then I'm done for the season. It was in storage on a wood shelf in my barn since November. I recently (3 weeks ago) went to start my mower and the battery was dead from the long winter, so I decided to try this battery out. I put it on the charger, only to find that it was still fully charged. I didn't expect that. I can probably use it again this November.

Good idea and great video, very nice job. I'm thinking about something like that too but for pulling a moose( with a sled like "animal skidder"). I think i will use a small generator 950 W connect on a car battery for more autonomy with the winch. What do you think about it? Another question: do you think the winch can work in continus for a long distance? Thanks for the anwser Mr Crockett
@PhilCrockett
@PhilCrockett 6 лет назад
Most winches like these aren't really meant for long distance. In fact.... I had to test it out before making this, just to see what it can do. I figure if it's too far, then just stop and let it cool at intervals. Would be good to see what kind of heck a fellow could give it. Let me know how it works for you, if you decide to pull a moose.

@@PhilCrockett Cool! I paint homes for a living my own business so anytime I'm looking to purchase a home to live in I always exclude condos. but there's one that's super inexpensive on the second floor of a place because there's no elevator and I had this idea to hook up a little swinging arm and platform on a winch so I could load up my tools pick them up swing them out over the balcony and lower them to the ground down below. first thing that comes to mind is how loud the motor might be morning and night when I'm taking tools and equipment in and out. I don't know. Is that a crazy idea?

Justin !!!! That is a genius idea!!! In fact..... electricians use a similar process when pulling large wires and cables up several stories. I was walking through a local hospital and got to see a winch in use for that purpose just a couple years ago. They actually anchored the winch to the floor with concrete anchors. I think your idea is fantastic!!

Do you eat innocent meat at the market? If you do, then maybe stop being so liberal. The hunters use the whole deer for food. And it’s so much cheaper than the grocery store pound for pound. Maybe you come from some rich family where your butler shops for you. A dead animal is a dead animal. And this is guaranteed organic unlike your cow meat 🥩
