When you R1+R2 a ring, the values should be the same at each point on the ring. Spurs will be higher. This is what your results demonstrated in the video. Try operating the switch a few times in the socket that gave you the 0.7 value. It’s probably just high resistance in a switch that hasn’t been operated in years. A few quick on and offs will loosen it and give you a better reading.

Came here to say this. 😂 Yes, r1+r2 should equal the line continuity plus cpc continuity, all divided by 4.

My understanding is that safety is a key part of why you do things in the order of chapter 64; by doing Zs first then R1+R2 later you could inadvertently leave a CPC disconnected from an accessory and not know about it later. First thing I do is identify circuits and functionality, turning all lights on, checking for true 2 way switching, going round with my plugcheck, disconnecting loads. Last is RCD tests followed by Zs and plugging loads back in.

How come at 13:56 you say the resistance of R1+R2 will increase as you reach the opposite end of the ring? I always thought that by linking opposite ends of the ring with the jumper wires, you're now measuring at 2 opposite points of a circle. Meaning no matter which 2 point you chose, the length will always be the same (and therefore the resistance). Then any high points are things like a ring within a ring, spur etc. I've not got years of experience like some, so I'm just curious.
@effervescence5664
@effervescence5664 3 года назад
Although you've linked them in a figure 8 the test is carried out by bridging the cpc and live conductors and as electricity will take the path of least resistance the reading will always climb until you're at the direct opposite end of the linked ring where both legs are equal in resistance. Edit: To clarify I would only expect it to vary by 0.05 ohms (excluding spurs) at most but from experience in commercial and domestic I have found this to be a quirk of the test.

Earlier I made a very similar comment. It’s possible during the editing of the video the sections have been shuffled out of place and that section should be with the little r1 and little r2 section. That or just a pure memory lapse, which we are all prone to.

Your correct , if you get higher and higherreadings as you go around the ring , that means you have the wrong line & earth connected togeter , common on commercial installs where singles are used, afraid to say Corey got that wrong!!
@Mr1980Stu
@Mr1980Stu 3 года назад
@@pault4793 it's because of the difference in size of conductors. the earth being smaller than the live so it will rise to the furthest point from the cross connection due to parallel resistances being added together but it will only be a very small amount. On another point testing at the socket will give false readings if any appliance is connected to metal pipe work gas hob ignitions boilers etc

Great work starting back at the gym - a little (big) note on nutrition though - healthy eating isn't eating less... eating salad... eating celery and humus. This is a really common misunderstanding which probably causes so many people to give up. Eat plenty. What matters is eating clean. No ready meals. No takeaway. No processed foods. Rice. Chicken breast fillet. Potatoes. Vegetables. Beans. Eggs. Oatmeal. Cows milk. Greek Yoghurt. Banas. Fill your boots mate, and keep the protein intake high. Favour a nice chonk of fish, chicken fillet, or eggs over bloating carbs, just enough carbs to fuel you through what you want to achieve, but not heavy carbs. No wheat. Nothing processed whatsover. Season your chicken, make it nice. Lather it up in a good bit of jerk BBQ seasoning. Whack on the franks hot sauce. Make your morning shake interesting. Banana, a few raw eggs, actimel, greek yoghurt, frozen fruit. Pop it in the brevville. Lovely smoothie. Add some dried / frozen fruit to your morning oatmeal. Eat enough good food early enough, and regularly enough to not have any desire for snacking. This my dear friend, is the key to a successful long term table of perfect nutrition you can sustain and be happy with (I never refer to good nutrition as "Diet" as diet implies temporary. Respecting yourself should never be a temporary act)

It can be a problem when they're too sensitive. When they age they become more and more sensitive. When they trip below 50% of the rated tripping current we replace them. The same thing happens with MCBs over time. They'll then trip, even if there's no reason for them to do so (no short-circuit, no overload). I'd say the high reading is caused by the contacts making contact to the plug. After inserting and removing the plug a few times the value was lower than before. Also the contacts of the switch can cause that. I found out that the targeting system of cats is sometimes a bit off, and cat pee is very corrosive.

Just a note , R1+R2 is not a requirement when doing EICR's , possibly do it on ring mains to establish interconnection etc, R1/R2 is only a requirement on initial verfication , new works etc, more and nore companies are limitating this , when i ran this past IET & NIC they both agreed Also if you get higher and higher readings as you go around the ring , that means you have the wrong line & earth connected togeter , common on commercial installs where singles are used, afraid to say Corey got that wrong!!

Contact resistance on sockets, push it in & out a few times & operate the switch. Should lower readings. R2 wander lead would be fine on periodic, no need for crossovers. Crossovers are for initial verification, to prove polarity as you have no live supply. End to end, R2 at sockets & Zs is all that’s required.😉
@PJB71
@PJB71 3 года назад
End to end
@PJB71
@PJB71 3 года назад
@Main Switch the reason for R2 is the readings you would get from sockets doing crossover are normally useless due to contact resistance & meaningless. It is very common on a periodic in domestic situation to use the wander lead to all earthed equipment. You can touch the screws of the socket, which proves the earth is the correct place. End to end & sampling checks for loose connections & zs for polarity & disconnection times. The main problem with EICR’s is lack of knowledge & what your actually trying to prove.

What’s the big deal about testing the circuits inclusive of the parallel paths? The reality is that those paths exist during normal operation of the circuit. I’m from Australia and here we generally do not disconnect the protective earth(CPC),except from the neutral, when testing! In older installations the earths are all soldered as there in no earth terminals..By the way Corey, your gym session is already showing 💪look out Nick Bundy
@felixmoran1
@felixmoran1 3 года назад
Because the parallel parth is likely to include a metal pipe going into the ground or to a metal tank that is also connected to another CPC. these are not part of the electrical installation so if the metal pipe or tank is swapped out for plastic, nobody is going the check how it effects the Zs, then the Zs increases to the point that the circuit no longer meets the required automatic disconnection of supply timing, creating a dangerous situation. Where in Australia are you that you test, definitely not in NSW from my experience! The soldering annoys the f*ck out me me, it's definitely still practiced in NSW and VIC. But even the twisting on conducters does tbh, be all the earth's soldered at a switchboard, in 2021...
@JJ-kr6ky
@JJ-kr6ky 3 года назад
@@felixmoran1 I’m from Victoria Felix and I always check the earth integrity by using a trailing lead to ensure I have a good direct connection. having an alternative path made of galvanised pipe will not give a meter reading that can skew the results to the point where it is assumed to be a direct connection other than the dedicated cpc. If the reading is less than 0.5 ohms it requires further investigation. I’m not sure if your from Australia or just worked here, but it is also common practice and acceptable to pick up an earth from the nearest socket to earth light fittings if not “earthed “that we’re previously only wired in two core cable. Twisting conductors is again common but only necessary when using stranded conductors to ensure good bite in a screwed tunnel connector of a switch plate or socket outlet. I suppose the brits don’t do it as they seem to use a lot of solid core cable and have these completely outdated ring final circuits that always seem the be very problematic when doing testing.
@felixmoran1
@felixmoran1 3 года назад
@@JJ-kr6ky so the cable feeding your water heater has a break in the cpc, you take your long lead and test for earth continuity at the water heater, you get 0.5 ohms so you're happy with that and walk way from the job. But what you're actually reading is the continuity from the water heater, down the copper pipes to the water bond, now a plumber comes along and replaces the copper pipes for plastic. Do you see the issue now? It's impossible to test for this if all the earth's are soldered, that's why I hate it. Been in aus 3 years now, I try to stay away from domestic work (c clips and single insulated cables in walls, wtf) so it's news to me that you can pick up the earth from another circuit, that's insane. I've always had a problem with running just a twin to a switch, you guys don't use many metal switches, but in 2021 you'd hope every accessory has an earth (supplied from the same circuit!)
@JJ-kr6ky
@JJ-kr6ky 3 года назад
@@felixmoran1 I’m sorry Felix but if I disconnect the cpc from the water tank and test it with a flying lead to the main earth terminal at the switchboard, I’m pretty sure that I can test whether or not it is intact.. I do understand what you are saying and accept that there is a possibility that someone alters the installation after you leave but the possibility exists from the minute you leave any installation and I have seen that time and time again. (Just as well I took photos and could prove that’s not how I left the installation). I can only allow so much for the “what if”. I do also agree that our system is not perfect but I don’t just work to the minimum standards. There is always room to improve on all regulations and tbh sometimes it takes a tragedy to make changes but your venting your frustrations to the wrong person. Maybe you should contact EnergySafe who is the electrical industry regulator in Victoria. I’d be glad to assist you to get your point across..
@felixmoran1
@felixmoran1 3 года назад
@@JJ-kr6ky haha, I'm only joking venting my greivences! The weather over here more than makes up for it! But my point about disconnecting the cpc at the board still stands though, you're only testing at the last point, there could be something with a parallel path half way on the circuit, the only way to test properly is to disconnect the cpc from the main incoming earth and bonding. As for altering the installation, yea any monkey can come and mess with the electrics, but the water pipes aren't part of the electrical installation, the best plumber in the world could come and swap the metal for plastic pipes, or it could happen on the street. You need to ensure cables you run (and nothing that isn't part of the electrical installation) have a low enough r1+r2 to safely energise, the only way to do that is to test the cable and nothing else.

It is used to have a cheaper rate of electricity at night (Generally between 12-7am). The downside to this is you have a more expensive rate of electricity during the day. Its used in properties where gas or oil hasn't been installed so they need the electricity to be used for heating.

@@Jakee3_ The 7 meaning 7 hours of cheap rate. E10 was also a thing, mainly in the north I think. The 10 hours being divided across the 24hr period

@@tperrin70 Level 1 won't be the 5357 C&G qualification. It's more like health and safety, theory behind electricity, how to terminate wires in a plug top/socket/ceiling rose. They might get you to design and install a ring main and a 2 way lighting circuit into a wall bay, but I doubt you'll be actually testing the circuit like this video shows.

@@marcusstonham yeah it is but nothing beats the full test and it proves each socket is working correctly as I've seen many with only one side of the socket working and high readings from loose joints all can be picked up through the testing at each point. I'm not saying your wrong just I like to go a bit deeper into and install
