I completely agree with Cory the use of those old work boxes in ceiling should be the go to standard instead of hidden away Wago boxes this makes them more accessible and better box space for wiring connections and improved testing. This should be the go to standard for light fittings as well and that also allows automatic fixings as well. That’s the recommended approach in the USA where we are not allowed to have non-accessible junction boxes.

I fitted two of these over 5 years ago they work very well one mains powered the other battery and have only just changed out the Lithium batteries. In that time Google took over from Nest which has made my setup of them with the wifi a little more complex than the original install with Nest. Apart from it not being advisable to fit them in kitchens I think they recommend hallways landings and locations where TVs and PCs are used. I can honestly say I have never had a false alarm from mine and they are a quality product that is reliable. The icing on the cake would be working with Apple Homekit which they don’t currently unless you use a Homebridge device for that would of course also bring the possibility of working with the Nest Thermostats you fitted recently as well.

I have just stumbled across a tool in the U.S called cable claw x 2 models. I was going to order all plastic long nose pliers to work on consumer units but I think that these are really useful. Also if you use Werner step ladders, with some models you can interlock various boxes and tools to them which I find very useful.

Good idea with the plastic cover following installation but perhaps a warning streamer of similar should be put on it to advise the customer to remove before use. I would not be surprised to see some of those covers still in detectors several months after an install.

Hi, just a thought but does the plaster board insert box provide fire integrity when used in a ceiling? I do know that there are boxes available with intumescent protection built in to them which might be a better option in that kind of situation. Keep up the good work and stay safe.

That ceiling was not fire integrity ceiling it only had on layer of plasterboard, and ceil or walk that has a fire integrity would have two lays of plasterboard, if you do come across a fire integrity wall or ceiling or you need to do is put an intermittent pad into the back of the box

6:25 You just reminded me as well, that the same thing happens on the AFCI breakers in the US as well, if you tie Neutral and ground it will trip those as well. That is without any GFCI protection on those breakers, just the AFCI by itself. Would be interesting to know if you do that to your AFDD breakers with the combo RCBO which does the breaker think it tripped out on, arc-fault or ground fault? Which blink code does it give?

First install I've seen of these. Very impressive. I know these have been about for a while so I'm a bit late to the party. Just wonder how reliable they are. One thing I do is I always over sleeve and earth any unused cores in a cable, in the unlikely event a fault could cause the conductor to become live and it's just floating and doesn't trip the protective device.

The cable tie thing on the wago boxes is daft. Have you ever managed to open one without jamming a screwdriver in it? You'd also usually need a tool to even access the box, seeing as you generally put them above a ceiling/under the floor. Still, regs is regs.

unfortunatly, yes it does, if its not a false ceiling set away from the original floor/ceiling construction, then it was never designed for holes to be put in it, no matter how how many layers of board there are, extra measures are required to maintain its integrity, at the very least, intumescent pads or hoods

@@tomorichard Hi, im not sure exactly what your refering to but the original question was "Does cutting a plastic back box into the ceiling reduce the integrity of the plasterboard as a fire barrier?", fire barrier or protection from spreed of fire in this instance amounts to the samething and unfortunatly, yes it does, if its not a false ceiling set away from the original floor/ceiling construction, then it was never designed for holes to be put in it, no matter how how many layers of board there are, if in doing this works you must use extra measures as required to maintain its integrity for fire protection, and to comply with this at the very least is to use intumescent pads or hoods, hope this helps

I rate them mate. They carry the MF symbol and all in one box without the separate connectors, box and tie wrap.
@petermichaelgreen
@petermichaelgreen 3 года назад
IMO the hager/ashley boxes are good for the simpler situations and because they are "one piece" there is less to screw up (for example with the wagobox series if you want the MF certification to be valid you have to match the right terminals to the box and/or use adapter plates). OTOH they are certainly less flexible than the wagobox series, with only 4 cable entries, only 4 independent terminals and only supporting conductors up to 4mm² I can see from a sparkies point of view that if you need to carry wagos and wagoboxes to handle the tricker cases you may as well just use wagos and wagoboxes for all your MF needs.

How does this comply with BS 5839-6:2019 for fitting into a kitchen?
@gordonbennett2945
@gordonbennett2945 3 года назад
They don’t unfortunately. Looked at them earlier in the year to comply with the updated Scottish legislations for Feb 2021 to have smoke detectors on each floor, main living area, heat in kitchen and carbon monoxide beside gas boiler etc. However they are explicitly called out on the government information website as non-compliant with that very BS standard: www.gov.scot/publications/fire-and-smoke-alarms-in-scottish-homes/ ... “Please note: the Nest Protect System will not meet the standard. This is because they do not meet the requirements for a heat alarm under the relevant British Standard. British Standard (BS 5839-6:2019) makes it clear that only heat alarms should be installed in kitchens” So until they release an updated product that will meet the requirements, stuck with the traditional providers by the looks of it :(
@arod9998
@arod9998 3 года назад
@@gordonbennett2945 yeah I had to take out all my nests for this reason as they need to be interlinked to a heat alarm to meet the new regs in Scotland. @clark5551
@clark5551 3 года назад
Thanks, that’s what I thought, they didn’t comply but was surprised at Jordan fitting one in the kitchen. So England has a different set of regs and don’t need to comply with the BS 5839-6:2019?
@clark5551
@clark5551 3 года назад
@Ellis The DJ the regs say ONLY a heat alarm can be fitted in a kitchen and these combine heat, smoke and co. Therefore do not meet the regulations as has been pointed out below. I’m curious if England don’t have to comply with the same regs as in Scotland or if that they just ignore the specific part of the regs that makes them unsuitable. What would the comeback be should the worst happen and insurance don’t pay out due to not complying with the regs. I’d love to have nest fitted but it’s just not legal in Scotland but as it’s due to a British standard, then can’t see how these can be legal in England either. 🤷‍♂️ be helpful if Artisan Electric could comment.

I didn't think a CO/CO2 detector would usefully work at ceiling level. The ones we have installed instruct they should be mounted around head height or lower (such as on a side table near a gas fire) at breathing level (where your mouth and nose are). The gas is heavy, or similar to air, and will asphixiate you as it rises up from the level of the floor, or disperses through the room
@buckyswider1
@buckyswider1 2 года назад
The vapor density of CO (Carbon Monoxide; CO2 has nothing to do with these units) is 0.97- or slightly lighter than air, which is 1.0. So yes, it mixes well with air. If you have a concentration of CO high enough to cause a hazard, a unit mounted on the ceiling will almost definitely sound with enough advance notice to keep you safe.

They don’t do it all, they are not heat alarms, and nest do not make one, and they will not link with the aico IC connection, pretty useless if you want to comply with building regulations if you ask me, had this on a install a few weeks ago and we left a heat alarm standalone in the kitchen and nest hall and landing, not ideal but customer insisted they wanted it as they are away from home a lot, come on nest make a heat alarm!

You shouldn't put redundant smoke alarms in the bin, they should be disposed of responsibly , come on, get a grip 😂😂😂☘️
