Electrifying Journey: MG4 First Drive As A New EV Owner

It's time for the first drive of my new MG4 Long Range Trophy. I've not driven an electric vehicle before, and so far have only sat in the car and synced the MG iSMART app to it. But now, it's time to see what it's like to drive, the performance, comfort, projected range and some of the features this car has.
Being a petrol head, do you think I'm going to like it?

Once you get an EV you won’t go back. Great drive and the MG 4 is great value. We need more small cheap EVs.

We do. I was dead against 'having' to opt for an SUV or crossover type vehicle (personal hatred 😆) so was pleased to see the MG4 was a similar size to a Golf - perhaps marginally taller, but not drastically so.

@@OfficialMacMotors I moved from a Golf to an MG4 (SE) and it's very similar. It takes up the same space in my garage, and it has slightly more length in the back for my bike.

I've not driven an iD3, so cannot comment, but I struggle to see how anyone who's already got a small EV wouldn't like the MG4. It does everything you could possibly want, and then some! For a lot less money than its rivals too.

Nice to see a balanced review from a petrol head. I have the original MG5 which is basic compared to your car but it is a fantastic car to drive and I have had no issues in 3 years of ownership. I drove all types of ICE cars in 40+ years of driving but nothing compares to the smoothness of drive of the electric cars. The only downside for me is the fact that you have to plan for long journeys and when/where to charge, this is getting easier with the rapid expansion of the charging network. I hope you enjoy your MG4 as much as I enjoy my MG5. Keep us updated.

Thank you! I'm trying to be unbiased and have entered this stage of vehicle running with a completely open mind (unlike some of the knuckle draggers that have made comment during my time with the car!) I've yet to do a really long journey and I'm sure that'll be an experience, but the charging network seems good now, from what I've heard, so I'm not particularly worried. Plus, with the range I'd ordinarily be stopping midway through anyway for a toilet break and coffee - at which point I'll stick it on charge whilst doing so. Not really an inconvenience.

I've had my Trophy long range since November. I really like it. It does take a while to understand the software and how it "thinks". Really smooth drive and loads of power when needed. The 0-60 is around 7.5 seconds but it feels much faster than that off the lights. With Octopus (7.5p/kwh at night) I can put 100 miles of range into it for around 2 quid ! The best range I have seen so far in this cold weather is 215 miles. As soon as I put the heating on about 10 miles of range vanish (and return if switched off again) Tip: Do a bit of research on your Ohme home pro charger settings before you get it. There are a few videos on here that help.

It's a great car and I feel I'm really going to enjoy running it. The performance is really brisk. On paper it's the same speed as my old Octavia vRS TFSI, but this feels much quicker due to the instant torque. Maybe not as quick as the Mk2 Golf, but that's just daft. 😆 Thanks for the advice on the Ohme Pro Home charger. I'm waiting on a cheap tariff now, but it's taking a while, so charging is costing a fair bit right now... although still cheaper than diesel!

Great to see you’re enjoying the experience of driving an EV and yes, it’s very different from an ICE but in good way. I took a test drive in a VW ID.3 and couldn’t stop smiling so I ended up buying one 2 weeks later, that was in July 2021. My wife was scared to drive it but finally got the courage and she absolutely loved it, so much so she asked me to get her one too! I would have bought the MG4 as it’s a cracking car to drive and probably the best value 300 mile + EV on the market but I got a massive discount on an ID.3 Tour back in October. Look forward to your next video! 😊

That's great to see you're happy with your iD3. Certainly a good car with a really impressive range with the large battery too. I have had my Trophy long range since September and i am still very happy with the car the economy of running this car is really good i have Octopus Intelligent Go with the Ohme pro charger i do about 200 miles a week as well as a 180 mile round trip once every fortnight the total cost each week is about £3.50 per week with an additional £3 for the fortnightly long trip. I used to spend £50 to £60 per week in petrol and the extra trip used to cost another £30. Like others have said, i would definitely not go back to an ICE car by choice. The car has a few small niggles with the software but they are only minor issues. I like the quiet smooth drive and the lack of smelly dirty fuel etc. also i am impressed by the instant power delivery especially when a boy racer sits next to you at traffic lights revving trying to show off. i love leaving them standing lol.

That's good to know an owner for a few months is still enjoying their ownership. I'm guessing the 180 mile round trip it can manage without a charge too? Even in these colder months? And as for the performance, I was overtaken by a Merc A250D, with a bumper sticker "You've just been overtaken by a girl." I couldn't have that, so left her for dust. 😆

Hello there, I can see you're smitten with the car so far! But what is the story with servicing? Is it an annual thing or perhaps milage based? Do you know what a service will cost? And what indeed does the service of an electric car entail while it's in there? I think I'll find your videos very relevant, hopefully sooner rather than later. I'm very curious to hear how your actual commute goes. Great vid, keep up the good work.
@OfficialMacMotors
@OfficialMacMotors 7 месяцев назад
Thank you. With regards to servicing it will be done through the leasing company and is once a year or 15k, whichever comes first. So for me that'll be after about 8 months! As for what the service entails, I really am unsure. I'd assume a battery health check, brake pad inspection and pollen filter change. There are also two coolant expansion tanks under the bonnet, so I'm thinking they're to do with the battery cooling/heating system, so imagine they'll need to be changed like regular antifreeze every so often.

I have had my MG4 Trophy for just over a year and love it. It had it's first service last week. Not sure what they did apart from giving it a wash and vacuum. They charged me £120 and it took about an hour and a half. It's a real pleasure to drive and have had no problems after several 200-300mile trips.
@OfficialMacMotors
@OfficialMacMotors 7 месяцев назад
@johnrubber1144 that's reassuring to know that it's been trouble free. I'm still baffled by the servicing, as apart from brakes and suspension I wouldn't have thought there's much to check, but I'm not an expert by any means. Whereas on my ICE cars I've had the engines stripped down on them so know of all their workings.

Not sure what you had the regen mode set to bur it looks like it was probably "adaptive" whuch is what i prefer if driving motorways or A roads. For town driving Iprefer the High setting. Also for the range as I am sure you know by far the biggest factor in range is temperature- as i said on your previous video my range has dropped massively in these cold months and my efficiency is generally less than 3 miles per kwh whereas in summer i was getting 4.5 on my commute and sometimes over 5 when poodling around town.
@OfficialMacMotors
@OfficialMacMotors 7 месяцев назад
When I took it out on that first drive it would have been set to normal drive mode and medium regen. I tend to stick it on eco and adaptive now, and if driving in towns use 1 pedal mode if it allows me (depending on charge). But yeah, the cold weather really clobbered the range. Thankfully not by enough to affect my commute. 😁

Which model Leaf did you have? The Mk1 or Mk2, as I've heard positive things about the Mk2, so if you feel the MG4 is an improvement even on that then that's good. The infotainment system I haven't had too many issues with personally. It's perhaps a little slow to respond and doesn't seem to like my fingers pressing it so I find myself being quite pronounced with how I touch it for it to engage. So wonder if mine has the latest software version? I'm not a great fan of touch screens in cars in general as I do find them distracting and a but frustrating having to cycle through menus, but I've not found it too bad so far. Better than a BMW iDrive, where everything is hidden away under sub-menus within sub-menus. The mileage in winter I'm finding around the same, which I'm very satisfied with.
