This is probably the best pedal I ever even touched. The tone is Eddie Hazel, Jack White, Jimi Hendrix and just about anyone with his head screwed on right. It can get you some of the horniest tones on planet earth.
Got my BIG MUFF Pi today... its amazing!! I love the overall sound of the BIG MUFF Pi and the appearence of the pedal itself especially those chunky dials. Great demo.
although many claim that this is a distortion pedal its not...its a HUGE fuzz. i ve only had it for about a year now but this was one of the best pedals i have ever bought. i am a freak for full sounds and this thing SCREAMS. i play both an hss strat and a gibson les paul through a fender hot rod deluxe. when i turn the amp up a bit i compare the sound of this pedal to a train going through the room. i recommend this pedal to anyone who plays classic rock and/or 70s hard rock
Around the time of The Wall, Gilmour was using the Big Muff "Ram's Head" He used the same Big Muff on "The Division Bell" and Pulse, although he also had a Sovtek Big Muff during both. He also used his Pete Cornish pedals.
The mids are scooped in the big muff, thats why its sounds "thin". You really have to tweak your set up to make up for that, but once you do it, you will realize why its so awesome.
First time I tried one of these was through a Randall amp when they had just came out about 1979. Randall wasn't much for distortion back them but plugging a Big Muff made all the difference in the world.
If you have a strat, and it's single coil 60 cycle hum, Lace Sensors are an option. I like the Red Silver Blue pack with Red in Bridge Position, Silver in Mid, and Blue in Neck. They handle all fuzz/distortion effects WONDERFULLY, including this pedal. They seem like the perfect compliments to each other. If it's just proximity feedback, play further from your amp.
sounds so f'in awesome. I had one a couple years back but sold it because it wasn't the sound I wanted. But now I love that saturated fuzz tone and WANT ONE NAO!!
I used to have one of these, best thing about it was if you turned the sustain up all the way and hit the low e and played with the whammy bar you could get it to sound just like Excite Bike from NES.
It's the pedal's VERSATILITY that makes it such a WINNER! I mean, check out the description...from Hendrix to Korn to Chemical Brothers! THAT, in itself, is remarkable!
thanks for the lazy eye cover, you are truly the best reviewer out there, you provide us with a good mix of different styles no matter what the effect, and you always help my disicions on which pedals too buy!
How does this original one compare with the "tone wicker" one, the new deluxe, or the new germanium ones? I have these small computer speakers. and Guitar Center does not have them all, and I will never go back there again, their service sucks so bad.. I will admit this one is a monster!! I have this one, but have not heard the other ones..
man I appreciate the thorough reviews of pedals and amps and guitars I just picked up this pedal and I love it. I used to have the black russian and it made my guitar sound like a blanket was over the speaker when I tweaked it but this pedal makes it come to life. ss72
It took me some time to get used to the Muff and get a good sound out of it, but once you do, it's awesome. Just be careful with the tone knob, high tone makes the sound super thin.
Hey guys, I'd this pedal today, he's arrived! I'm very happy, It's a very nice pedal, recommended for every most qualited guitar players, who wanna play cool music! :)
I've tried getting some feedback with this pedal on the neck pickup on my strat and it did this low bass ring. It shook my whole house. It's a pretty badass pedal
I quite like the low end it has. I never like an instensely treble tone. To me it just cuts through the ears like a chainsaw. Having it lower just gives more clarity and versatility. I can see why everyone rates it so highly now.
Nice demo. Can someone help me out though? If I wanted a nice fat tone, with as much low end, which muff would do that best? I was thinking it would be between the USA, Bass big muff, and the tone wicker. Something good for a nice thick stoner/doom sound, something that I can kick in for heavy riffs.
That's why they made the "Little Big Muff" it's the exact same guts. Also you should look into getting a pre drilled box and swap out the guts, you can have your own custom Big Muff, my buddy did it, it's looks way cool.
Verse: Clean, Chorus: Boss DS-2 Distortion, Bridge: EHX Electric Mistress Flange ,Solo: Big Muff Pi USA I think on the record the solo was done with a DS-2, but live he usually uses the Big Muff
Are there any pedals that yoiu know of that can come somewhat close to to the actual vintage Muffs? These reissues arent doing it for me, and I've played through every one of them available and actually owned four of them.
You sir are awesome, not a lot of people listen to Volume 4 (well at least People I know) My favorite Sabbath album. Any who, this pedal is awesome. Thinking about buying one.
i play in an alternative rock band and a punk band and im buying this pedal mostly for my alternative band. could i possibly use this pedal for punk? any things i might keep in mind with the settings when i get it and try playing with the punk band?
@seanypants91 So would the tone wicker be better than the Pi? I really love the tone of the Big Muff Pi so if I were to get the tone wicker would I still be able to get the same sound?
alot of people say they sound the same but i bought a little big muff and it was less as over the top as the regular big muff so i then bought the regular big muff and i prefer the Big muff for tube amps and the little big muff for solid state amps
I think that all but the 808 are distortion pedals, so that would be digital tone. The 808 is an overdrive pedal which is boost, not artificial distortion.
What is the pedal that the guitar player for the black key uses? I've heardhe uses a russian big muff.. I want this pedal though.. could I get the same sound as TBKs from this pedal?
Consider that proguitarshop has many video demos of MUCH more complicated pedals that don't last half this long. I take this as proof (to which I myself can attest) of how much huge fun this pedal is.
i just got one of these used - pretty sure it's an older model as it's got a switch on the back of the casing that turns off the tone knob. also, above the tone knob it says "tone bypass," which is something i don't see very often in pictures of these. here's my question - this thing hums like crazy when it's turned on. is there any way to mitigate that? i'd love to use this live but that hum might be a deal breaker. anyone have any thoughts? thanks.
@BnHwrd It was an original Big Muff Pi, fed into the low gain input a 100watt Marshall JCM800 which had been rebiased to use KT88 valves. You can get a close approximation using a Marshall JMP-1 preamp's clean channels + the big muff PI via the effects loop..
love the sound of the pedal, just one question, i play down, c.o.c, led zepplin, deep purple, blues that type of music, currently i have an ltd viper ow with seymour ducncans pick ups, think it would do a great job, what you guys think should i invest in one ? cheers
