At the + side, all the - ions will form. At the - side, all the + ions will form. In salt water, there are the following elements. Hydrogen. Oxygen. Sodium. Chlorine. Hydrogen and Oxygen from the water. (H2O) Sodium and Chlorine from the salt. (NaCl) Sodium's ion is Na+. Chlorine's ion is Cl-. Hydrogen's ion is H+. Oxygen's ion is O-2.* *Note, this is not O2, but O with two (2) negative charges, or otherwise said as, oxygen with two missing electrons. Therefore, at the + side, chlorine (Cl-) and oxygen (O-2) will form, because their ions are negative (-), and so at the positive (+) side they will reform into atoms. At the - side, sodium and hydrogen will form, because their ions are positive, and so at the negative side they will reform into atoms. Summary: + side: chlorine and oxygen (they're negative ions) - side: sodium and hydrogen (they're positive ions) You will not see metallic sodium forming, because it will immediately react with the water to form Sodium Hydroxide, which will dissolve in the water. Sodium hydroxide has 1 negative charge. (NaOH-) Since there is nothing to balance out the sodium hydroxide's negative charge, the solution will be basic! Hope this helps, I still don't have metallic sodium, but I am working on it!

helo mam i heard a lot about electrolysis of water but i never heard about the important part that is the quantity, i mean for example in 1Lt(one liter) of water how many oxygen or hydrogen do u think you can extract? don't you lost something in the process of electrolysis? like the water is used up or the iron rode for +ve/-ve ware out! anything? I do know that electric power is used to activate the electrolysis so power is used up and what else are limited?

How on connecting the two rods bulbs light, what are the rxn taking place? How the circuit becomes complete when connected the two rods?
