What is hypermagnesemia, and what are the key concepts the NCLEX wants RN nursing students and LPN students to know about fluid and electrolyte imbalances?
Hypermagnesemia is fancy words for high magnesium in the blood, or high blood serum magnesium. Normal magnesium levels range from 1.5 - 2.5 mEq/dL according to the NCLEX (NCSBN boards). Magnesium is an electrolyte that helps mellow out the muscles, therefore electrolyte imbalances like hypermagnesemia lead to the unique signs and symptoms of flaccid paralysis, muscle weakness, decreased DTRs (deep tendon reflexes), reduced respirations, low blood pressure and very slow heart rate (bradycardia).
This video is part of a 12 video fluid and electrolytes series to help registered nurse RN students and LPN students with electrolyte imbalance memorization tricks. In this video Michael Linares, RN from Simple Nursing helps pinpoint the exact causes and treatments for hypermagnesemia, which is expected to know for the NCLEX, HESI, ATI, and Kaplan proctor exams.

How do you treat hypermagnesium?
@jamiepenzie7472
@jamiepenzie7472 2 года назад
I am so confused. You said signs and symptoms would be diminished or absent reflexes and weak muscles. But then for treatment you say to give calcium gluconate to help settle down the tense muscles, and to monitor the labs and the increased DTR's ?? But you just said they would be weak and absent DTRs? Or are you meaning that after treatment, to watch for an increased in those areas?

When you talk about causes of elevated magnesium, taking magnesium supplements to help with sleep is never mentioned. As we know, people often take supplements without knowing what problems can arise.

Love your videos, but some of the information is inaccurate. Under the chart of things that cause hypermagnesemia, DKA (you mentioned correctly drains magnesium) so that would categorized not as something that causes hypermagnesemia, but something that causes hypomagnesemia. Also, at 3:01 you say that with high magnesium "muscles tense up from all that pressure", however high magnesium creates flaccid muscle paralysis. But the antidote - calcium gluconate, you are correct would calm the muscles that are twitchy. Calcium gluconate also antagonizes the receptor sites affected by the mag toxicity too.

My baby has been having seizures from day 10, he's one year now, after many failed attempt to stop his seizures and cp ( he's yet to gain neck control) I was looking Tru all the blood tests we have done so far and discovered, his magnesium is 3.1, his phosphorus is 5.7, and creatinine is 0.4. I'm tired of going to the hospital, those doctors just look at me with pity as if I've gone mad, I don't know what to do

Why did you say DKA drains magnesium from the body but causes hypermagnesemia?
@SimpleNursing
@SimpleNursing 8 дней назад
In DKA, body magnesium deficits through urinary losses are routinely encountered and are the consequence of absence of insulin. However, magnesium exit from the cells may cause hypermagnesemia.

Weird, ever since I've been taking 400 magnesium glycinate for a month. My tourettes tics have gone down. But my eye muscles have been twitching for the last 3 days. & my skin gets prickly in my hands feet im not diabetic. I gave mom 1 magnesium h she felt prickly before I even mentioned my own issues. She has high blood pressure normally she takes meds. I have 60 blood pressure usually. I've never taken drugs.

This guy tries too damn hard to be a Cartman Brah and to also try to be seen as a real professional, and that can't be done when it comes to something as serious as medical/nutritional knowledge and information, and that annoyed me and made me stop the video after only 30 seconds. It's like bro, be a doctor be a professional and make videos as such. For the sound effects and for the cartoon graphics and for all of the nice light shows that kids find pretty and funny, go review movies or go review video games if that's the image you want to take.
