Love the video, love the way you use the SEM, reminds me of when we built the SEM in the garage by cutting the screen of the old oscilloscope (you get x-y control for free) and mounting it into the vacuum chamber to inspect flat panel display traces (if you energize them you can see them - sem can pick up 5V difference in float voltage). We got very wide field of view (>10cm) at high enough resolution. Post more!

Carbon nanotube-coated kevlar armor has been on the market for years. The coating greatly improves the kevlar's structural integrity and shelf life, even making it waterproof. Bullets that are stopped by the kevlar weave tend to embed themselves in the material, but the coated armor can protect it enough for bullets to bounce or barely stick to the vest itself.

I have to say, any one of your videos would have me thinking the person behind it was very well versed in the subjects being discussed. But to see how many subjects you cover, and at the depth/degree you dive into them, it is really very humbling I must say. Most science video channels I don't feel intimidated at all, but this channel is a different story. You have to be one of the very brightest people on youtube. Again, namely because i don't think i have seen another channel that goes into the same depth on such a breadth of subjects. I don't know of another channel that comes close. Glad to see your subscriptions are growing, well deserved... thanks again for producing these, super interesting stuff...

Almost everything is glossed over, hard to find or inscrutable. Like just looking into carbon fiber means having to sift through the mountains of "DIY carbon-fiber" thats about bloody vinyl stickers. But here you *literally* show discrete parts of it, thanks.

Just a small tip, because I noticed you use your fingers to set up your sample in the chamber: It's best to avoid touching anything going into the specimen chamber with your bare hands. There will always be at least some residual oil from your fingers. Over time you'll wind up with a carbon deposition over everything in the chamber, inside the column and in the electron gun itself. That will continually degrade image quality and cause serious problems in the microscope down the line. If the carbon deposition gets bad enough it could cause arcing and serious damage to the microscope. It's a good idea to always wear gloves when touching any part of the specimen chamber, samples or sample stubs for SEM, or to use tools that can keep your fingers away from them like forceps designed for sample stubs. Sonicating sample stubs in acetone and allowing them to air dry on filter paper before use is also a good idea, to remove anything like oil or other contaminants that may have gotten on them prior to use, then storing them in a container that will keep them from touching anything else until you're ready to use them. Also, while the duct tape for mounting your setup was probably the most convenient way to go at the time, I would avoid using that for mounting if at all possible. The residue left behind by the adhesive will get burnt off by the beam and have the same effect as the oil from your fingers.

Great work, I am a few months away from retirement but around 20 years ago I did something similar with the head of an insect in an SEM. QuickTime VR had just been released so I took pictures of the insect every 10 degrees thru 360 degrees and at 5 degree tilt angle for 90 degrees. Fed the 2D array of images into Apples QuickTime VR object creator and bingo on the screen was an SEM image that you could manipulate with the hand cursor.
