This is my latest build, from May 2011. To date, Jan 12 2013 I have 29,262 kms on it. It has a trailer hitch, but there's enough room inside for a weeks worth of groceries.
I have been using this as my exclusive transportation.
Although this vehicle is capable of higher speeds, It's kept at a legal speed and power output using a cycle analyst computer, tied into the controller.
How fast, 60-65 kph
How far, ~ 200 km @ 35-40 kph, with some pedaling
How much, batteries, electronics, frame, canopy, shell ~ $3700
Weight, ~ 160 lbs
Batteries, 60v, 20AH LiFePO4, + Occasional 48v 20AH LiFePO4 reserve
Motor Crystalyte 3548, installed june 2012
40A infineon controller
Cycle Analyst, V2
100w DC-DC converter for lights, fan, heater and radio
Front brakes Sturmey-Archer, laced to Sun CR-18 rims

Thanks Harvey. I installed a small propane radiant heater to keep the canopy fog free. It also warms the interior. The side flaps open to keep CO levels low. Couple of weeks ago I took a 150km trip with temps at -15 to -20 and lots of wind. Since then I installed small electric blankets around the lithium batteries to stop cold temperature sagging. This has worked really well. Cold weather and salty shushy roads are good tests for any vehicle.

Thank you. Okay, you might want to build or buy a trike the braze or weld on some attachment points. I did that plus used heavy duty HVAC hangers for the live loads. I used 18ga 6061 T6 bent into U channel and cut into 1" strips for the woven body shape. Check out the video description for photos. The body is 2part 2lb urethane foam on stretched 10 weight Lycra skinned by more 10/weight Lycra and polyester resin (west system) the body was built to match the trike frame to the 8' RV-8 aircraft canopy which I cut into three pieces. There are lots of small fabrications and a few additions since it was first built, like for example, a ducted cooling hose for the controller and a 12" pre stressed monoshock with variable tension. This vehicle has been a real learning experience and will help me in my next design which is heavier but more roadworthy at higher speeds.

What I like about your velomobile... it even has air conditioning inside. It is very professionally made. I mean if we are going to built Mersedes it is here. Not in terms of high quality, but in terms of spacious cab, good view and features. It should not be light weight, but should have good powerful electric motor and batteries.

Ken Bell zero emissions, 100% green, pure electric, I like it. if you ever build more of these you can make a serious business with that, and not only that but helping to put out the use for gasoline and oil, even making it an Eco-friendly Bicycle/Vehicle for environmental benefits it has.

The police here have been very good and seem genuinely concerned fir my safety. I've been asked about lighting by officers and asked how I feel other traffic responds to me, so I have to say my experience has been good. Although my velo can go quite fast, just as a car can, it's design optimized for 32-40kph so concerns of speeding haven't really come up. I've always been a cautious driver and those habits translate to this vehicle. Thats what keeps me alive.
@kokopelli314
@kokopelli314 11 лет назад
I sure will Amanda, Thank for your appreciation. One day I hope, this kind of vehicle will be very common. Recumbent riding is much easier on the back and legs than sitting in a car.

Very nice! I love it. I've been riding electric bike the last three years. I have several hub motors. Mostly BMC, V2, V3 and V4, with a Ping 48v 20amp. I'm in the process of a couple really big builds. using Phasor frames, Cromotors hubs at least 100v 25amp batteries. With what you need a Schlumpf highspeed crankset 34T/ 84Tooth. I love to put my big setup in a clean Velmobile like yours. My systems got regen braking too. More video please.

ThankYou Ernesto. Yes a couple times I've ridden heavy summer rains. A little leaking around the black rubber side flaps. Repositioned the bottom of the flaps to the outside of the vehicle to shed water. Visibility not too bad because of the large viewing area, but I had to slow down.

Thanks for the comment Mike. I imagine that a cromotor at 100v would drive a velo 70-80kph easily. An 84t crank might be a bit of a squeeze though.

I started with the frame design. Needed suspension as my last vehicle was pretty rough. Videos of that are on my YT channel. Might end up using this shell design for a plug. Anyway, for basic building tips go to Atomic Zombie. For detailed suspension and design go to Recumbents.com . For all electrical including motors batteries etc go to Endlesssphere forums.

Thanks John. People who make canopies often have ones they either can't sell or certify for flight. I got mine from toddscanopies in Florida. The controller comes from Ebikes.ca although I have infineon, crystalyte and no name controllers from other sellers and manufacturers. Lyen mods infineon controllers. Check out his stuff on the "endless sphere" forums. Of the 4 motors I use, two came from ItsElectric.ca one from Ebikes.ca and a high power electric motorcycle hub directly from China, through a friend.
