Christmas eve 2021 dawned with the first snow covering South Sweden. This, with the temperature drop, caused what Swedish birders call "avalanche migration"; when large numbers of birds migrate in a relatively short time window. On this day gulls dominated, but several big flocks of skylarks passed as well, and the occasional meadow pipits also migrated.
Gull migration is arguably among the most elegant migrations. The grace in their flight facing strong headwind is stunning; seemingly effortlessly they advance towards southwest as a height of their choosing, and a flight style matching the choice of height.
