Fall decorating and cleaning are in full swing and you are invited to "stop by the farmhouse" and take a look! I'd love to get your feedback on the new porch designs and some thrifted finds, as well. Thank you for being here!!

Aside from your dress being a wee bit short, the porch chairs encroach on the entryway. Cue up to 18:39 and see how your left leg almost hit the chair arm and you had to go around it. As a designer, never have large objects in a small space that arent for actual use like the doctors handbag and the logs (especially on a table like that). You can do better dear. 😊

Sarah, I don't think you know how much your soothing, creative, and lovely videos help me. I feel like I could show up at your doorstep, drop my things, and share the inner workings in my mind and heart. What a blessing to learn from your experience...of finding thrifted items for specific purposes...of maintaining a balanced life with family, faith, chores, and work...of showing your struggles as you try out new techniques and items. I'm thankful for your gentle nudging to create a cozy home, no matter the budget or size of the home. Hugs...

We live in the PNW also, in Sammamish and our 1895 farmhouse had a raised wood back porch and one in the front. We redid the back porch in herringbone red brick, made it larger and and it is now covered. It's very durable and is the main entrance we use. The front porch is not covered and we had to rebuild the rotted wood years ago and it never feels safe in Fall and Winter. With all the rain we get it never fails to get green algae and get slippery, so even though yours will be covered, the upkeep from dirt and damp on a wood porch in our climate is not for the faint of heart. I wish ours was cement quite honestly! I love your decorating for Fall!

I think the idea of the Swedish columns is interesting. Wasn’t your house built by a Swedish family named Swenson? Using those columns might be a nice way to pay homage to history of your home. But whatever you choose, I have no doubt it will be tasteful and beautiful! ✨✨✨

Such a beautiful and calm space. We bought an 1825 farmhouse in Tennessee 12 years ago. It also has a wrap around porch. It had wood flooring and I fought with them for 11 years. They were painted gray when we bought it, but had been painted many times. We were repainting and constantly doing touch ups and replacing rotting boards. Finally, we decided to start over and have a professional come out and sand and stain them. They were beautiful but that didn't last either. Our contractor literally just finished last week re-screening and putting our new flooring down. We chose blue slate. We love it and I'm so so happy with it. It will be there forever with no maintenance. Possibly something to consider... Whatever you do will be magnificent! Everything you touch shows it was done with love 💗

I would do a herringbone brick porch and apron. The pillers I would do the second (the Swiss). I would also paint the bench your daughter brought home a sage like green. Something?that looks sophisticated in your foliage.

Your stying on the porch is very pretty and cozy. I like the Swedish style pillars, but I can’t remember the style of your house exactly, so it’s hard to decide. About the wood floor for the porch, I have a house built in 1910 and when we had a wraparound porch added, we chose to use vintage fir flooring that we had salvaged out of old houses. The builders we hired started to lay the floor flat, like a deck, because they had never built a covered porch with a wood floor before. My husband had them redo it to slant away from the house for drainage purposes, I think about 15 degrees. They also had to put a metal flange around the bottom of the wall to keep water from seeping into the house. So, make sure you address this with your contractor. Ours was used to building new houses or remodeling in a newer style, so it was like pulling teeth for a year to get them to do things the way we wanted! It was important to me that it turned out looking like it could have always been there.

When I retired, I redid my office back into a craft room. I found a big old Art Deso desk at goodwill for $20. I needed some bookends to hold my planners and journals but just couldn't find any that would hold them up. I remembered that I had picked up 2 wooden shelfs that came out of old phone booths. Do you remember those?! They were from the really old wooden booths and were to help hold up the phonebook I think. I used to work at the phone company back in the days when you could dial zero and get an operator for collect calls, person to person calls, etc., so they had kind of a sentimental value when I found them. Anyway......they work great as bookends! and YES, we need to bring back bookends as decor!

A tip to keep squirrels away from the flower garden is sprinkle dried corn kernels nearby but away from your plants. We did this to keep them away from our bird feeders and they don’t bother them anymore. It’s better than putting out corn cobs because one squirrel will haul it away and not leave some for the others. Don’t leave it in a pile either. They will fight each other over it

Don’t give up on your cut flower garden dream! Five years ago I desperately wanted a cut flower garden. I’ve had many failures, but now I have more flowers than I know what to do with and give away bouquets! Dahlias are more vigorous if you take fresh cuttings from the saved tubers in the spring. (It’s also a free way to get MANY more of those expensive plants ). I’ve had more success with transplanting my own sunflower starts than direct sowing. It’s a good idea to put a cup or some kind of cover over them until they’re established. If you like them, cosmos and zinnias are lovely and vigorous. I like nothing better than a huge, wild bunch of cosmos. ❤ Your porch will be so pretty. I like the Swedish columns, but I do think those gothic ones were amazing. We replaced our rotten wooden porch when we bought our current home (built in 1922). Despite our best efforts. new wood has also weathered pretty badly and needs some help. My husband is frustrated with the maintenance of wood and he’d like something else, but I love the look of it on our old house. 😊

Can’t wait to see the porch reveal. I found two cast iron bench ends at the Springfield flea market a couple of years ago. I showed my husband and he made the wood slats out of cherry wood we had in our garage. It turned out beautifully. His dad was a furniture maker so we have a lot of wood. I was thrilled to put it to good use. It has aged with time but I think it just looks better.

My favorite book ends are made from my husband’s first little cowboy boots which looks like they are from about age 3 years old. His mother had them bronzed and made into book ends. I have seen bronzed baby shoe book ends but never befits have I seen little cowboy boots. You can see some wear on these little boots. So unique and special and they are quite heavy because they are on a marble base.

I dont know how you find time to do everything, I have a massive yard in small rural city. house built in 1889. Farmhouse Victorian. The tall johnson grass has taken over my large bank of flowers down the back hill of our property, My produce is coming in heavy with all the preserving that follows. Im blessed but overwhelmed at the same time. I admire your graceful ways and the peace that your home exudes. I think what speaks to me is that your home is Graced with treasures that speak of differnt times. Its not show casey but left as if it would be in the days of old. I would keep it simple slightly bolder thicker posts than what you have but dont make the entrance feel tight. Maybe a antique chandelier or pendant over porch ceiling. Definiitely paint the ceiling a sky blue. it really does help with the bugs and spiders.

We have a 100+ year old home, which we love. We love our wood front porch, but as my husband and I get older, low maintenance is becoming more and more important. The wood on our porch/stairs has been replaced many times and the stain is always peeling, etc. Just something to keep in mind for down the road. I'm sure whatever you choose will be amazing. Can wait to see it when it's finished.

Off the top of my head, I count 12 bookend sets but there are probably a few more scattered here and there. I also will buy a single if it is interesting. I often kant my books at an angle on the shelf so you can see the bookend or I will put one facing out and put books with pretty covers or a favorite author behind it also facing out so you can see the cover too. I will tuck one in amongst plants and use in my closet with a purse behind. Also, you can prop up artwork so it doesn't slide off the mantle. All kinds of uses!

Don't be hard on yourself about the flower garden! It takes a few seasons to figure out what seeds like your growing conditions. Your dahlias look great! As for those squirrels, next year you might try planting sunflowers through a piece of bird netting laid flat on the ground, pinned in place with landscape staples. It will prevent digging critters. I think the bench would look good painted all black--wood and metal or black metal and unpainted stained wood. Swedish columns from the first photo would look nice on your house!

I'd put a marble top or something on the bed foot board and make a table. Perhaps paint the the bench wrought iron a medium green and then antique it and then paint the slats white? How about perhaps sticking to the style of your home for the porches? It's Victorian, right? I'm sure whatever you decide will be lovely.

This is lovely , so relaxing ... Just wondering about all these nice pieces being weatherproof ! Even in Fall we will have some days of heat & humidity . In central Illinois , it's common to have fast changes in weather - even watching forecasts closely it's not easy to plan ahead to move pieces in & out of sheltered areas. 🥰

Sarah. After all my years I feel simple is the best! Simple columns, wood planking deck and brick walkway. Herringbone is a classic. I’d make some sort of seating with cushions ( then add pillows and blankets) out of that foot board. Child’s bench charcoal paint for iron work and then boards in a creamy or light grey color. That creamy vase looks like the ones I have and they are vintage wedge wood. I absolutely love mine and use them all the time since they are the perfect color and size. Hope you have a fantastic week.

I love your porch decor. Just my opinion but the fur throw seems too much. I love the plaid one. I would place the basket of wood on the floor. It looks too top heavy on the table. I would paint the cast iron of the bench black but not sure about the rest of the bench. I am facing the same dilemma. As well, I hope you use square and not round pillars. Coming through Brimfield this past weekend from a weekend getaway in Rhode Island, they were setting up the tents for the September show. I always think about how much you enjoyed going there. We are planning on going one of the 5 days (if the weather cooperates) since we live only 45 minutes away. Looking for vintage linen and Christmas gifts.

Wouldn't it be pretty to have two vintage amber wine glasses in front of that ice bucket? For 20 years I owned White Oak Studio & Gallery and my logo was made of oak leaves and acorns as was my sandblasted varnished natural wood and painted road sign. We took our name from the 27 MAJESTIC White Oaks we had on our five-acre property.

It feels good to get deep down and clean then the satisfaction of decorating what you have cleaned. Yes I agree. Love the outside cabinet perfect for a porch. I think I would turn the foot board into a bench, I am not sure about the porch swing I think it belongs in the house with beautiful fabric on it. I love the looks of the Adirondack chairs but not comfortable for a long sitting. Maybe a cushion?

I think the pillar round columns, wood floors and the herringbone patterned side walk. The bench black rod iron painted a color that ties to the house accents. I love the acorn bookend. I am on a bookend journey for unique ones. I so look forward to your videos.

When I saw the footboard for the bed I immediately thought about a fireplace cover and how beautiful it would be in front of a fireplace when fire and heat are not in season

My suggestion for be larger smooth round that taper or square with detail. Either one would work on your home. Round would soften the appearance while square would sharpen it. ( I would highly recommend not going to slim on your pillars 6” plus if possible.) I learned the hard way really could not stand round slim stick pillars . From the road they looked really small and didn’t define the porch well. Personal opinion. I come in peace.

Beautiful! As for the book ends, aside from the dogs, the others have more of a seasonal aesthetic. Personally, I always gravitate towards the menagerie. I have a rule. Each room must have at least one. BTW, I forgot to mention earlier, you really had me at the alabaster lamps.

As usual, I loved every design choice in this video. One question I have is, how do you handle blankets and pillows outside? Do you leave them our always? I did last year on my covered porch, and the pillows were okay due to an outdoor fabric, but my blankets got faded in some areas and full of dry leaves and insects. I want the cozy vibe, but I don’t want to have to clean it all season.

Our porch is well covered by the roof, so I haven't had too many issues with fabrics out there, unless we have weather coming in sideways!

I would do something slightly bold with the bench like a deep brick red color or a forest green with black wrought-iron. And paint you can always change.

Sarah, I feel your pain about your cut flower garden. I had to put my dahlias in a 8x16 enclosure so the deer wouldn't get to them. You'll love the herringbone pattern on your bricks. My husband made a patio area and a walkway in that style 30 years ago. I still love it! Can't wait to see your new porches. Love your fall styling! ❤

Whatever happened to Halden Garden? I subscribed to their flower box, and soon after, they closed shop. I can't wait to plant some of the seeds I got from them for next spring. Also, I loved hearing your rooster in the background.😊

Hmmm, the last time I talked to the owner, he said they were shifted their focus to only selling mums. But, I just looked at their site and you are right. They must have decided against that. Thank you, I love that crazy rooster!
