That was nice but I would do better if you had a step by step process for making this from scratch where we can follow along, complete with the materials and tools and hints. I would say, do a how-to video doing another screen, showing every step and testing it out on your van, as a backup item or make it a giveaway for someone following you who has the exact same model van as you.

I used a bamboo skewer to hold my screen up inside my windows, I sewed my curtains to the bottom of the screen rolled up with little ties and when I want privacy I just unroll the curtain and it has snaps on the screen and curtains and I snap them up in place. I've not had any issue with the skewer coming out of the window or the sliding doors catching on the rolled up curtains. I like the idea magnets but I also like that the curtains are stored just below the window attached to the screen but my curtains don't have a lot of insulation. I may add a washer and make a window covering with padding and magnets later. You are always full of good ideas.

Thank you for another great video. Fortunately for me the Toyota Sienna is level and straight in the second row windows they are also 3' so gorilla tape for the edges and the gutter covers work really well. I also have an abundance of fine grained ballet tool and magnets for when I want more ventilation or less. Humm I may try that garden edging over the vent window on the outside for rain protection... A really good source of coroplastic board is political campaign signs. I snagged a few that were left up beyond the time they were allowed, by city ordinances. Thank you for taking the time to film your how to. I always get new ideas for them. Safe travels.

I built a pair of gutter guard ventilator panels for the rear windows of my Ford Explorer based on another RU-vid video I had seen. The double edge fits well over the glass & I cut the top & sides to fit in the windows channel. Front windows have curved glass edges so couldn't use them there. They do leak when it rains, but I do not have rain guards yet. I painted the white ones dark brown to match car color better.

Hi MJ! Yep, it's definitely one of the more complex processes in my build. But I knew I couldn't handle screens pasted up with velcro. Or magnets on the outside. I bought custom made window covers from Heatshield...so I am just going to use them for any template for any of my windows ....just a suggestion. The window covers have a gold side and a black side so when camping in the cold you can flip them (except for the back window on the dodge GC) but when in the desert this winter you can put the gold side out to reflect the light...they are the bomb and well worth the price just in the time it would take to make all those patterns...I will use them in the back to make the screens for the back windows, too.

Very clever, Leslie. I like the way you used the landscape edging and you helped me realize a mistake in the set of screens I’m currently building. You are right, to my knowledge nobody has done this before. I will make one suggestion. Rather than paint, use 4-way stretch carpet over the corrugated plastic. This is the stuff they use on subwoofer boxes and 3M 90 adhesive will hold it to the plastic. Nissan actually uses this same construction for the door panels on the NV200. Anyway, just subbed :-)

Oh man! I spent a good deal of time and effort to make the gutter guard screens, which look pretty good considering what it is, but I get nervous trying to close power windows with them in place. I did not want the screen sock which, IMO, looks worse than the gutter guard. This is so much better!! Thank you for sharing your design in detail and so articulately! My Sienna has a funky curved plastic piece on the back windows that I will have to work around but I’m going for it!

Hey PJ, I agree with you about the sock thing. I also hate the look of holding a screen up on the outside with magnets - aaaargh! But I get that sometimes you just have to get the job done. However, why not spend some extra time in a sweaty garage trying to figure out a way to make it practical AND elegant, I say!?!! LOL! Congrats on going for it, you got this.

Question: what are the magnets attracting to, the washers? I see many videos using magnets but there is nothing inside my car that is metal. I don’t want to go outside after dark to remove anything or attach anything. I guess I’m dense but I couldn’t follow this demonstration at all. I’m in a SUV and have twice ordered screens specific to my make and model, the slip over the door kind, but neither fit over my door. I’ve made the privacy boards, but the screens are killing me. And, how can I use the privacy boards and screens at the same time; it’s hot here! Thanks for sharing all your hard work! Very creative!

Hi Metro! Yes, the magnets and washers attract to keep the covers in place, that way I can put them up from inside the van. I don't have much metal around my door, either. I know this was definitely a confusing process to follow. There was no real easy way to explain everything I did. I like your idea of keeping the screen up permanently. I made vents with the corrugated plastic (i found there is a glue specially made for the plastic). Mine are 3 layers thick with the middle layer (the screen in between 2 of the layers) being the one that goes in the window groove. Also a suggestion: put more washers on the sides so that u can attach the reflectix at different levels.

Your van videos are great. Thanks for making them. I like your window screen design, but I watched the video twice and there are a few things I don't get. 1) Is the top gutter guard piece connected to the coroplast sides? How? 2) Why the gutter guard strip on top? Why not coroplast on all four sides? 3) Does the whole frame sit inside the groove for the window glass? If so, it must be wider than the actual window opening. If that is true, how do you get it in and out? And if the screen frame is in the window groove, how does the window go up and down with the screen in place? 4) If the screen frame is not inside the glass window groove, then what holds it in place? Thanks!

Hi Dirk, Thanks for asking. I realize how (over) complicated I might have made this and I know there are probably 1,000 other configurations that would also work. But to answer your Q's: 1) No, the top gutter guard piece is not connected to the coroplast pieces. They all just stay in there, god willing. 2) After I did this, I asked myself the same question. You probably could use a frame made entirely of coroplast, staple the screen on it and stick it in the window groove. The coroplast does buckle and bend when you insert into the groove because 3) Yes, the whole frame sits into the groove and is about 1/4" to 1/2" wider than the window opening. I don't try to take it in and out, as there's no need to. The only time we open those windows is when we're parked, so we wouldn't ever have the need to roll them down while driving on the highway, testing the screen against 70mph wind. To get it in initially, I gently bent the coroplast until it fit inside the groove. And still it bent a little. And somehow (I just discovered this through testing) the window does go up and down with this contraption in place. No problems so far. 4) Yep, the screen frame is inside the window frame. I know this is not the easiest process to follow. I came up with this solution after shoving various materials in various places until things started to make sense. I translated that as much as I could but there's no substitute for just trying stuff out and seeing what works. I hope this is at least a little inspiration, if not a real "blueprint" for you. Are there any other questions you have about the screens so far? I hope you let me know if you find a good solution for your van.

Hey Rose! You can tell the window is open because there's no glass, just screen. We leave it down all night when we camp in perfect weather in perfectly safe campgrounds. 😃 Otherwise we just crack the window down a few inches under the rain guard and start the fan. Thanks for asking!

I am confused about this. Also, can you roll down the window more than an inch or so? My sliding door windows go down several inches. If you want to open them as far as possible do you remove screens?

Hi Kimberly, Yes ma'am the screen is in there all the time. I never want to mess with it ever again! We roll the window down or up with no problem. Only thing we can't do is drive with the window open or the screen might blow out. Thanks for asking!

Hi Sue, I just cut out reflectix to the sizes of the windows, glued down fabric and sewed around the edges. They work great!

Looks super. Have you tried gaffer's tape rather than duct tape? Gaffer's doesn't get gooey/slimy in heat, is matte not shiny.

Don't play around when it comes to the shelter lol to me it's the most important thing because your van is too small to be inside of for the most part.... I went with the clam escape they are super pricey I was lucky and found a damaged box the case was ripped but I got it for $150 the clam shelter itself is fine I thought a bag on Amazon that will fit in it was for outdoor furniture that was $50 waterproof bag 7 ft long lol... You can get the side panels at camping world right now three for $49.... You need six of them you can easily put $500 into a clam shelter but it's worth it as soon as you pull up at the campsite you can pop that thing up in 60 seconds and have a weatherproof shelter to put all your things in or to hang out in you can use them like a tent you can cook in them you can set up a movie screen and watch movies endless possibilities... Don't be fooled there's nothing like the clam except maybe the gazelle.. the advantages all the parts are integrated and it has the hub wall design which are practically indestructible in foul weather... There's no other gazebo or sun shade or anything that will do what the clam or gazelle will do unless you get an off-brand hub shelter you could be wasting your money on crap quality tho

So, for $100, you can order sun screens for just about any car. These have a high UV rating, and the mesh will keep out the bugs while letting the breeze through. They are a factory fit, light, and easy to store and are made for hundreds of different makes and models. Save yourself all the time, effort and endless frustration of making them yourself. Not to mention all the materials and supplies. Even after all that work, you end up with something that looks like shit and never fits that well.
