I'm pretty sure a sword which folds entirely into its handle is impossible. At least if you want it to be even semi-functional as a sword.

Ah, I really like that you guys talked about Sai being defensive weapons; you're absolutely right, they're meant to bind a sword and break it. They're also good for- when you do the flippy thing and stab, you could also swing them like clubs; that's their armor-breaking potential. Hmmm... weapons... Roronoa Zoro's Wado Ichimonji?

Elektra actually wields bladed sai. It's not a real world accurate weapon, as sai are never bladed, but in order to call them "Elektra's Sai" they should be sharpened into blades. Otherwise, they're just normal sai.

Thing is these are for cosplay and as they’re made from metal you’ll probably end up in jail if caught in possession of them if they were pointed even if you were caught with them and questioned they wouldn’t accept cosplay as a valid reason

So let me see if I’m reading this correctly. Elektra Sai = Bladed and operates like a dagger. *(Offensive Weapon like the sword or dagger)* Real World Sai = Not bladed, has the look of a screwdriver with a more rounded tip. *(Defensive Weapon like Escrima Sticks or Tonfa?)* If that’s the case I don’t know which one hurts worse. A blunt edge being driven through your body or a sharp and clean cut!

@@Gemini053well for one you don’t actually drive someone through it’s middle prong, it’s basically a medieval police baton so you bonk someone on the head with it. And if someone is too close you flip your grip on it and start punching people with the thing with it’s pommel

Actually, the things on the sides of the sai is also used for flipping them in your hand. You actually start with the sai backwards with the "bottom" when in your hand needs to be facing down when you start

OlioH _ i think the fusion builds were a bit of a flop, and they realized it and moved back to the normal builds.

C4RD3R Well, I like the normal ones, but since they jump from classic builds and fanart builds, a fusion every once in a while wouldn't be a bad idea. They just need to think it through a bit better than just glueing weapons together. I will admit that the gauntlet and the TMNT build were pretty dumb. For example: the fusion of Soul Calibur and Soul Edge is already canon (Evil Soul Calibur), but why not make a new design based on the idea of the two weapons fused (Edge Calibur)? Doesn't even have to be a sword. And this could go for other stuff. I just think that fusions have the ability to stretch their creative muscles beyond the technical aspects they are already masters of.

Adam Knight I would assume they would forge the blade completely with a hole in it's center, near where the blade meets the grip, and place an orb of some kind within, an LED I think, which would light up. Beyond that, I don't quite know.

fun fact! sai was originally a farming tool, sort of like little pitchforks. they are mostly known as weapons now because Japanese farmers built entire methods of fighting around the sai to defend themselves from bandits. same thing with nunchucks.

BTW the Japanese had a similar weapon called the _jitte_ (十手, translates as “ten hands” in English), used in the Edo period by the _okappiki_ (岡っ引き), the police at the time. The only aesthetic difference between the sai and the _jitte_ is that the latter only has one side prong. Moreover, the _jitte_ is used for hitting, rather than stabbing.

No offense to Matt's ability as a blacksmith, but Ilya's one is just going to be stronger overall, due to being one piece. Matt's has the potential to break at the welds.

A good, deep weld has the potential to be stronger, depending on how you are measuring strength. Ilya's will not likely break, but will be more prone to bending. The welds will usually temper harder. So, over time and punishment, Ilya's will bend and be bent back slowly weakening the metal until it gives way (each bend makes the next bend more likely until failure). Matt's should stay hard and straight longer, but if it fails, will do so all at once. Of course, they used different steels as well, and Matt did a so-so tempering (focusing solely on the point), and those factors play into it as well. Still, unless you are routinely throwing your sai into block walls poorly so that you are banging the guard tips for max leverage on the nexus, either should last several lifetimes of actual combat use - particularly as bulky as those were.

They are for planting rice. They were not designed to catch and break weapons that's just a function of it's design. The center tine makes the whole for the rice plant and the side two are for spacing between the plants.

Oh don't get me wrong, a fully articulated Crescent Rose would be fan-friggin-tastic. But only if it doesn't wobble and rattle like weapons with that many joints and sliding rivets tend to do. Not to mention how heavy it would be, and subsequently how much stress would be on those joints at all time.

That's probably asking too much of them. That would be an incredible feat of engineering to make a working version and it would probably be a pain in the ass to make all the individual sections for a non-working version.

The Dragon Flame Tongue you mean? It's pretty awsome as a lot of weapons from heroes. but they are all rather dark/agresive or crude looking. and we've already seen quite a lot of blades like that here. I would like to see something more refined more elegant. Theres just more on angelic alliance that we haven't seen done (alot) jet

Ed Hunter Yeah, I meant the Dragon Flame Tongue, sorry, yesterday I was really sick and high on medicine(still am), and I get what you mean, but most of the popular weapons in video games are actually the crude ones, the really intimidating ones, regal weapons are seen as "weak" / "ornamental" in the eyes of many people.

while a defensive weapon, a sai is capable of more than just stabs. whether rounded or faceted, the primary prong is capable of delivering a hell of a lot of force into a "slap" and the butt cap is likewise a headache maker used to punch.

i was hoping we'd get some mention of the fact that sai are clubbing weapons rather than stabbing and slashing weapons as film and television keep portraying them

If they were authentic that'd make sense, but it's a build based on tv, so they probably didn't think it mattered.

the ones in the show, unlike the movie, were authentic, yet they still treated them as stabbing blades when they're basically blunt. it's a huge myth about these weapons that basically because they have sword-like guards that they must be daggers instead of batons.

sai are not sharp. they're billy club style weapons. they have a point that can be armour-piercing when thrown thanks to their weight, but isn't actually sharp. stabbing with them makes about as much sense as stabbing with a police baton or a tonfa. the only movie i've seen which has used them correctly is "the matrix reloaded", where they are used for striking, punching with the reversed grip, and blocking in both positions. the daredevil movie was the most inaccurate, using them even for slashing as if they were knives, but the daredevil show still uses them for a lot of stabbing, which was disappointing

bluntly... the pre dragonslayer was difficult enough. but dragonslayer itself... doubt they have a quench tank big enough. or anyone there that could lift the ( as the manga says it, a slab of steel)
