May seem strange to review the Elektron Monomachine 20 years after the fact but it's selling for big money these days so now's the perfect to take stock and ask, "Is it worth it?"
00:00 Intro
00:26 It's digital but sounds more unique than analog synths
01:45 MnM as "collaborator"
02:22 What makes it so unique?
02:54 Elektron's best interface?
03:35 FX as their own synth engines
05:06 Is It an Arp or Sequencer? Yes

I’ve had my Monomachine MKII for more then a decade now (got it in near mint condition for 250$ 😁 ) and don’t think that I’ll ever sell it. I love that machine! But like you said, it’s not for everyone. If you hate menu-diving then spend your money on something else, especially for the price they are going for now. But if you want something really unique and your “pockets are fat”, then I highly recommend it. I also don’t understand why they haven’t/won’t make a new version of it, since it would most definitely sell pretty well.
@MKDVB
@MKDVB Год назад
Damn sir, well done!! Though I have to say, I don't think it's very menu-divey at all! Most important things are one screen away, unlike the A4 where I have to click around if I want to find envelopes, noise, etc. I honestly don't understand today's Elektron. Like, how many drum machines do y'all keep needing to put out?!?

@@MKDVB yeah I can see that, the mono in my mind is very much the freak alien beast of digital synths. I was wondering the whole video how you even fit it into your music with everything else going on!!

@@hamburgerhelperofficial Yeah, the track either had to start with the Mono in it or it sat out. Couldn't add it later (& I tried a few times). I think it's my style too that is part of that. I also felt like it was really hard for me to finish tracks with that box too. Still love that box but keeping it felt too ... materialistic for the spriritual vibe I'm aiming for.

Hi! I've been a monomachine owner since 2005, upgraded to a mk2+ shortly after it got released and it's the only box that hasn't been swapped out of my setup. It's a strange beast for sure and still I discover ways to create new sounds. I really appreciate your honest review and in the end all decisions related to gear are very personal and emotional. I found myself in a similar position where I had s lot of value sitting in a TB303 and I sold it to get a monomachine. never regretted it. A feature thst I really appreciate is the transpose track where you have a separate midi channel to transpose the entire monomachine with midi notes. It's great for making electro or other styles with more of s song structure. Personally, sure I can sell the monimachine but that will probably mean I'll never be able to get one back. Gonna check out your other vids 😊

I loved my MnM, such a unique box. What it does best isn't in my usual wheelhouse but when I found something that clicked for me, it was amazing. Unfortunately, I lost a batch of sounds by switching snapshots or something (sure all of us Elektron users have probably experienced similar!) and then prices shot up and I sold out, hehe! I am really happy with the A4mk2 though. The sound palette and updated sequencer suit me more, but the MnM is legendary.

@@MKDVB I've lost some great material as well through plusdrive hell 🤣 My current focus is the small program I created for generating waveforms to upload in the monomachine. I started out by (loosely) modeling additive synthesis,as found in the kawaii k5000 for example, and improving it bit by bit. The waveforms are actually usable now 🤣 I love how the monomachine can morph between parameter locked waveforms making it behave like a multidimensional wavetable.

Ive considered selling mine at times too, then isolate it, spending a few hours and feel guilty for even thinking about it. I understand, it isn't for everyone, but I foresee the prices continuing to increase. I've played some killer live sets with it and another box that's capable of more modern sounds/samples too. Was a perfect combo, after years of lugging a ton of stuff out.
@MKDVB
@MKDVB Год назад
Man, the Nicholas Lem live set was absolutely amazing so I'm sure that must have been a blast and quite capable for you as well. I wish I could settle down with just an Elektron box and another synth like y'all but if I did, I think the A4 or maybe the Octatrack would be the one for me!
@ritualsoundsystem
@ritualsoundsystem Год назад
@@MKDVB absolutely! I love my A4 as well, for very different reasons. It's on my never sell list as well, but I totally get those that don't mesh with the Monomachine. It doesn't suit every style, but definitely works wonders for others.
@olm9476
@olm9476 Год назад
To really no ones fault, i think the mnm suffers from a general consensus of misinformation online about it. If you start to use it by avoiding key tracking, going crazy with parameter locks and thinking its wild, and unpredictable, you might use it for months before you realize that you are almost further behind than when you started. It really is an amazing machine but to get a general sense of control you almost need to have every parameter memorized to its time or measure correlate, the true inits of each machines memorized and a full understanding of how the temporary and permanent memory hierarchy is implemented. So it is a lot to ask for to use a piece of equiptment with confidence. This is just my opinion on the matter as of today, I really never wish to promote dogma in regards to any sort of music creation.
@MKDVB
@MKDVB Год назад
Great take! Definitely a machine you have to immerse in. Only thing I'd add is that they're re-selling around $3,000 USD so not "suffering" too much! 🤑
@blindianajones
@blindianajones Год назад
Well done. I keep thinking there has to be one synth I could use, much like I do with a guitar... where the synth is base tone and I slap fx on it. This is how I ended up in modular. I wanted the core parts / pieces of a synth but I wanted to control the addition of any character. Oh, and that includes the interface to sequence and play. Id rather choose the interfaces that work best vs having to learn an entire silo of conrols I cannot us with other stuff or that is too limited in features.
@MKDVB
@MKDVB Год назад
Nice. I've got a small euro rig but I've constrained myself because otherwise the endless options would be too paralyzing. What's your modular setup? What'd you choose for the core sound/tone?
@blindianajones
@blindianajones Год назад
@@MKDVB I know what you mean by the limitlessness of modular. Lately, I have been diving into what the heck each module does and the corresponding synthesis so I can stop getting modules that overlap or dont do what I thought they may. I dont have it yet, but I am very excited about Joranalogue Steo 8. Its relevant to the Elektron world because this module can essentially send out gate and cv per step of the 8 steps. I think the varigate 8+ did something similar but not as clean and clear as the Step 8. My focus with modular is trying to figure out how to create a "sequencer" for any and all sounds. I'm incorporating loopers into the mix with the intention of sing the looers just like sequence, driving tempo and sync with other audio and cv. Sounds will always change, but the means for me to engage and play could stay constant, with a subtle change here or there. By focusing on a sequencing system, I am not going after all the modules out there.

It’s funny how the elektron box that sold the least on release has become the one that sells for the most now. But then we all know scarcity = £££ You’ve got a tough call to make, it is truly unique and irreplaceable guess for me it would come down to how much I paid for it & whether the profit I would make would ease the loss.

@@MKDVB the ‘relative to using’ makes sense. ‘If you love something set it free’ is bullshit. Only applies to the living. You will regret your decision 100% in a couple months. Some instruments can sit till you need it again. Others like anything behringer can go. I wager you are wanting an Syntakt and are justifying that by selling your MM while trying to keep a little extra money. BIG mistake. My MM/MD goes nowhere…too unique.
