ELEPHANT GARLIC - The Garlic You Can Grow Anywhere!

Elephant Garlic is actually a leek, but it grows and tastes much like traditional hardneck and softneck garlic varieties. If you live in the southern part of the country, Elephant Garlic is the way to go!

We use to always have cats around the farm, mostly in and around the milk barn. Granddad would always give them a couple small bowls of fresh frothy milk, we children would wait then, wearing thick work gloves, and try and catch the kittens as they came out to drink, which would be pure spitting hairballs of fury, but they sure were a terror on vermin. When out and about and we came across a Black King Snake we would be encouraged to bring them back un-harmed, they too were good for vermin but they were there to help keep the Copperhead and Rattlesnakes away.

I had good results with straw onion mulch. It doesn't pack down or get sticky, so the onions are clean and happy. Shaded onion bulbs get bigger.

Thank you for the info on growing garlic and elephant garlic in the south. I’m in 9b Texas Gulf Coast and wondered why my garlic didn’t put on much cloves due to not being cold enough. I just planted garlic and elephant garlic in 20gal containers and will see how it does this year.

I like using straw as a mulch because it’s light and fluffy and is easy to build up a thick layer to block weeds, keep the soil cool, and retain moisture. BUT I rarely use it anymore because it’s really difficult to find straw that you can guarantee hasn’t been treated with a persistent herbicide that will mess up my garden for several years. Plus it will always have some amount of seeds mixed in which will sprout. I’m not super worried about the wheat or barley seedlings as they’re easy to pull out but it’s another job to do.

Here in zone 5a we should have hard neck in now! But it has been so warm and wet i waited. Got 4 to 5 inches snow last week. Now our daily hi is 40. Ill be planting this week. I always use 4 to 6 inches of slightly composted mulched leaves. Works like a charm. We feed a herd of cats and they keep mice, gophers, chipmunks, and rabbits away. A fair trade.

Here in Zone 9b, I'll be planting mine in late November. I just ordered mine from y'all, because that !@#$%^ shed is coming down tomorrow!!! Yay!! Another 200 sq feet of garden space for my drip tape Zone B! As for wheat straw, I've used both soaked and aged wheat straw and hay, and found it to be pretty good. However, I've abandoned that practice, because getting organic, non-treated wheat straw and hay is VERY expensive. Wheat straw and hay treated with Grazon can contaminate a garden for a couple of years, and I certainly don't need that. The same goes for buying manure or compost - You have to be sure that the animals that produced the manure were not fed Grazon treated hay for the same reason.

I am also in zone 9b & was going to say the same thing about the hazards of straw in the garden. You said it so well, that I don't need to add another word. I now have a neighbor who is spraying roundup on his 11 acres & my garden is showing the signs of death from his stupidity on Native Plants & their beneficial effects on the soil. It's the downside of living too close to one another.

New gardener this year, and i bought couple pounds of garlic before realizing it'd be real tough to give em the cold period they needed... Ended up storing them in the fridge with the rest of the garlic till end of oct then planted them out. Heard sticking them in the fridge for a few months will trick them into thinking they're going through winter. Supposedly once ya plant them they think its spring and shoot up. Mine are about a month maybe 1.5 old and atleast 1.5ft tall so far

Put the straw in for the chickens to pick over (same goes for pea straw) - if you have chickens, that is! They’ll clean up your straw varieties from any or all seeds.

How many “plant families “ do I need to work with? A minimum number of plots to rotate?😁👍🏻
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 года назад
Depends on how many of those families you plant. Most always folks plant nightshades (tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, eggplant), cucurbits (cucumbers, squash, melons, pumpkins, etc.), and brassicas (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.). Those are three big ones, but there are other families you may plant that would benefit from rotation as well.

I planted the elephant garlic I got from Hoss last fall. It's mid May now and I pulled one and it had a big onion like root with little garlic cloves on the sides. Did I harvest too soon? Why didn't it clove up? When do you harvest it? I'm in Central Florida.

Little bulbs on the side are called corms and you can either eat them (but they're a pain in the rear to peel down to the small bulb), or you can plant them in mid-summer and they'll come up in the fall. I plant them in an area where I can just leave them alone, and I planted about 800 last summer and probably had five or six hundred of them that sprouted in the fall, and they made small bulbs which will turn into larger bulbs when I replant them. The corms will form on the sides of all of the elephant garlic bulbs regardless of the "mother" bulbs size. The bulbs that bloom, that send up a bloom spike, will typically be the ones that split or subdivide themselves. You can let them dry out for a few weeks, and peel them down and see the individual bulbs. Sometimes a small bulb will turn into a large bulb that doesn't divide, and it typically does not bloom if it does not divide itself. You can either eat it or plant it the following year to get a really large bulb that divides itself. I've grown elephant garlic for years, and it's fairly straightforward to grow and is a reliable producer. I pull mine up whenever they start to have brown leaves at the bottom, typically whenever about half of the leaves have turned brown, you need to get them out of the ground because if you wait too long, the layers of tissue like skins that hold the bulbs together will decay and you'll just get a clump of loose bulbs instead of a tightly bound cluster like you get at the grocery store. Good luck have fun.

@@quintyoung thanks for that. Is there and email where I can send a photo to you. So the big bulb with no clove lines is drying in my garage. How do I preserve it to replant next year? I'm in central Florida and it's getting hot but there is green on my elephant garlic and one looks like it is sending up a flower. If I understand correctly that one will have cloves not just one big bulb. If I have more big bulbs are you saying that I can dry it out and eat it? Will it taste the same. Sorry for all the questions my first time growing or eating elephant garlic.

It does look like a big onion when pulled. Once it is dried, the cloves inside will be visible.

Do y’all use heat mat or anything on your seat starting
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 года назад
We do in the spring with crops like tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, etc. But not in the fall because it's usually warm enough to where we don't need it. And most of the crops we're starting in the fall like cooler soil temps.

This is the one we use: hosstools.com/product/germination-mat/. It's commercial grade and will last a while. We've got mats we've been using for 8 plus years and they're still good as new.

Elephant (nor any actual Garlic, for that matter) doesn't particularly care about your First Frost Date. Our First Frost up here (Ohio River Valley (Cincinnati-ish)) is generally mid to late Oct. I plant in beginning to mid Nov (Now) and have planted as late as Christmas. No real noticeable yield or size difference no matter when I plant, as long as it's before the Hard Freeze and ground's too frozen to dig.

Why not on the ridges?

Because we like to get two rows of produce from one row of drip tape -- it's just a way to maximize our garden space. You could certainly do them on single rows on the ridges.
