All wildlife must be managed in order to maintain a healthy ecosystem. This includes elephants. In spite of what you may have heard by uninformed media outlets, elephants are NOT going extinct! In every African country where elephants are legally hunted, their populations are not only stable and healthy, but they are increasing faster than the land can sustain them. If not properly managed, this can have severe negative effects. While on this management elephant hunt, we witnessed firsthand the devastation an overpopulation of elephants can cause. Just about every organism is affected by over grazing elephants, not to mention the problems associated with human/animal conflict. A lot of people get emotional when discussing the proper way to manage wildlife, especially elephants. I urge you to go to Africa and walk with the wildlife. Talk with the local protein-deprived communities. Sleep under the stars for a few nights, then formulate your opinion on wildlife and the best way to manage it.
