I don't know if anyone else has ever posted these together, but I wanted the full story to be together so I merged the videos. I hope you enjoy this. I do not own these video, I just wanted the full story to be seen together
I was always tickled that she got him so good!! And I was always impressed how he could keep a straight face during his antics and the rest of the cast busting up laughing.
@@SimonQX Are you kidding? Sweet little Vicki is one heck of an actress, and I was not ONE BIT surprised when she came out with that legendary line! And now that we know the whole story, it's even funnier! Loved ALL the cast on that show, every one of them, but I especially identified with Vicki because she's closest in age to me. I never missed a single Carol Burnett or Mama's Family episode!
@@DigitDesign She said, "Did you hear that little asshole sneeze?" about an audience member who sneezed just after Tim talked about one of the siamese elephants sneezing.
True, although I loved that he started cracking up prior to his punchline/imitation of the Siamese elephants. (He starts smiling at around 4:09 and eventually starts laughing at 4:28.) But to see him completely lose it after her ad-lib was the icing on the cake.
@@kareninalabama I know, right? But he's laughing because he thinks he's getting ready to put one over on the rest of the cast. He didn't know that Vicki had been warned beforehand that the little devil was going to shake things up! 😀
Though Vicki was almost his equal at keeping a straight face. She was doing the best of the other three at managing to keep a halfway appropriate expression (in this case, "WTF is he talking about?") during his story, and manages to keep IN CHARACTER to deliver her killing blow before finally losing it. 😂
Vicki had a talent for staying in character when reacting to Tim's shenanigans, she claimed it was because she was mostly too terrified to break. There's an early rehearsal of Mr. Tudball where Vicki plays Tim's wife, and she got him to break there.
OMG, my husband & I remember watching Carol, Vickie, Tim, & Harvey!!! I know Dick Van Dyke was on the other end of the couch & I'm amused that he couldn't get his composure either. I loved this show so much!!! RIP Tim Conway, you were loved by many!!! 🤣🤣🤣❤❤❤
The beauty of this skit is watching Tim time his delivery based solely on the actions of his fellow cast members. This is a masterclass on delivering a monologue.
The artistry in these things is often overlooked. If you watch Tim close, you can see him assessing everything. All of them knew how to do it, but I agree, Tim was a master!
Probably the absolute funniest piece of television history ever recorded!!🤣 When Tim went "Norrk!" I completely lost it! Then when Vicki as 'Momma' said "Ya think that little as*hole's about through?" I lost it again!😂😆 Tim was one of a kind! R.I.P.!😉
Vicki's deadpan, ticked-off delivery sold the final punchline! Fans of the show will remember how her character in the recurring Family sketches was the crotchety old Mama, Carol's character's mother, although Vicki was 16 years younger. Here, Carol is 45, Vicki is 29, and it's the show's last season in 1978. The two enjoyed a long friendship, starting when a 17-year-old Vicki sent Carol a fan letter, and Carol decided to cast the teen as her younger sister on the show, in 1967 after Vicki turned 18. Now aged 90 and 74 respectively, these two great ladies will always be lovingly remembered by the fans.
We've re-run the end of that sketch a bunch of times & just CAN'T figure out what Vicki/Mama's punchline was! Somebody please help! We're a few yrs shy of 80, so watched this great ensemble on TV many times - classic stuff! 🤩🙋
@@Sssmaug Well, the sketch had them playing a game, it was Mama's turn, and Carol was holding the game card up and saying, "Go ahead, Mama, go ahead," trying to steer the thing away from Tim's cracking everyone up. To which Vicki replied, in her unsmiling, thorny, Mama way, "Sure that little a**hole's through?" 😎
@@billparrish4385 Hi Bill, thanks so much - HILARIOUS! No wonder it was their last season, you didn't say things like that on air back then. 😅😁 ... Did anyone ever tell you, you look just like Anthony Hopkins! 😜👍🙋
They sure do! I get a shock every time I think about it! Well they say laughing helps you stay healthy & love longer, so let's keep watching the good stuff. 😊
I always remember that when Tim and Harvey went at it, Tim almost always winning, Carol and Vicki would just step back as a Greek Chorus and just become part of the audience. The strength of Carol to let that happen on her show was one of the things that make it so great.
That's just good management and collaboration. When you have someone who's amazing at something, just point them in the direction you need and watch them run. Robin Williams was the same: "here's a character and where the story goes (like Genie). ...And now we have HOURS of gold on film that we won't even have time to use."
Sadly we will never see another show or group to compare to them again. Tim and Harvey were brilliantly funny as was the whole cast. Every week without special effects, or anything else everyone else seems to rely on, they made us laugh and have this time together
I totally agree. Tim Conway was absolutely the funniest one on the show. So many sketches where the cast totally lose it because of Conway. It was comedy at its best!
I would so love to see another verity show like the Carol Bernet show. Unfortunately, it just wouldn't work today, comedians would be worried about saying something that would offend someone and then the show would be 'canceled'.
I’ve heard that Tim almost NEVER broke character (in other sketches he has this mischievous glint in his eye when he makes others laugh, but won’t do it himself). This is one of the rare instances in which he totally lost it.
I remember watching the show during it's original run, with my parents. Tim was always my favorite. And the "elephant story" has always been tied with "the dentist" as my favorite.
The WWII sketch with Tim as a German officer interrogating Lyle Waggoner using a little Hitler puppet is also up there. it is SO funny to see Waggoner's surprised expression when Tim Conway suddenly whips out that puppet.
One of the funniest sketches ever! 2nd favorite "went with the wind" when Carol comes out wearing the curtain rod! Then there's Tim and Harvey's dentist sketch when Tim gives himself novicane 3x! Havent laughed so hard since show went off the air!
Went with the Wind was CLASSIC! I also love "No Frills Airline," "Rancid Harvest," "Putrified Forest" and "Rebecky." The shows were funny and pure class, no vulgarity.
“I saw it in the window and I just couldn’t resist” ties with Tim’s “gnsnorky” for best lines ever! 😂 🤣 God, when cracked each other up it was just pure heaven for me. How I loved that show! They should remaster the whole thing and replay it all!
This is kind of a bittersweet thing to watch. My mother loved that show, and that bit was her all-time favorite T.V. Moments. She loved to tell people about it. In fact, that was the last thing she ever did. She was in the hospital recovering from a major heart attack. My brother and a family friend were visiting her and she was talking about that skit. When she finished the story, she laid back and she was gone. It hurt to see her go, but a few months later I was discussing her passing with a coworker and I said, "she finished her story and then she was gone." There's just something beautiful about that realization and the fact that this was the last story she wanted to tell.
That is so beautiful. My cousin was 33 me the same when he died . He was a jim carrey type before jim carrey. He kept me rolling. I miss him so. That gave her so much joy. Laughter is thd best medicine. Sorry for your loss.
You should find a way to let Vickie Lawrence or Carol Burnett know about that. That's a wonderful story, and I'll bet they would appreciate hearing it!!
The man had all three of his costars- including Dick Van Dyke for crying out loud- literally crying during this sketch. Not to mention Lawrence’s epic one line delivery sealed the entire thing. One of the funniest impromptu moments in live sketch show comedy history. Carol and this entire cast were beyond epically talented and man are shows like this missed today
Truely one of the greatest, funniest moments in TV history. I still get rolling every time I see it. Heck - I have tears in my eyes right now after watching it!
@@kevinmcgiffin10I grew up watching the show with my family, and I think all of us that did are very fortunate. Comedy is very subjective and is also dependent on context. Not just in the immediate, but the culture and the times that people live in. Compared to today, the seventies were a more innocent time and there was a place for this kind of humor. However and quite unfortunately, we live in a much different world today. As a result, humor, which to a large degree exists as a form of relief from stressful circumstances, has also changed dramatically and there is very little place for this more innocent form of comedy.
Sorry but that's not even remotely true. I grew up watching the Carol Burnett show and Mama's Family and I always hit up RU-vid every few months to watch cast bust ups during some of the funniest sketches to ever hit television audiences and I know a ton of people my age and younger who do the same. Gene Wilder, Tim Conway and Harvey Korman were Gods of sketch comedy and comedic timing and you can plainly see their influence in shows like Madtv and SNL and they are terribly missed by millions even in this age of Netflix "comedy" specials and social media content creators. Also can't forget about the absolute legends who are still with us in Carol, Vicki, Mel Brooks and Dick Van Dyke.
One of the all-time funniest things I've ever seen. Tim Conway was a genius, but it was great to see Vickie put it out there. Amazing. Great show too - lots of classics.
Tim Conway could destroy an audience -- not to mention everybody in the crew -- just by a raised eyebrow at the right time. Pure genius, never to be replicated.
Tim was one of the greats, but if u want to see him in his prime watch the movie "the apple dumpling gang" he starred along don Knott's and both of them together..iconic
So you are onstage with three of the funniest people in the business and with one sentence she dropped the two men to the floor and had Carol face planting into the couch. Not just another pretty face.
@@lynnehenderson4140 ...when the elephant story pops up on my homepage I always watch it. I was surprised to see this explanation of the story. I also come to tears of laughter every time I watch it. Certainly one of the funniest moments in television history.
She said " Are you sure that little asshole's done ?" Shocking in that period of time, and after that build-up that was the equivalent of knocking it out of the park.
Getting Carol to break character was difficult, but could be done. Getting Tim to break character was next to impossible; to see him lose it was just so awesome! Loved this show!
From the start of Tim's elephant story to Mama's grumpy "..figure that little asshole's through?" is certainly falling-off-the-seat comedy's best of all times!
@@longshot398 we do have it, its called saturday night live........guess what, its not funny......more like sad. guess thats why nobody watches it, people dont like to be sad on saturday night. now sunday night maybe cause they have to go to work in the morning.....its that monday morning blues.
One of the greatest 5 minutes in history of TV. I have watched this 1,000 times and I laugh each time. Conway starts talking the dwarf & his elephant lover. Carol is like OMG! He's doing it again! VanDyke is trashed from the start. So they struggle reset. Then off he goes again w/ the Siamese elephant stuff, Carol his toast, Van Dyke is trashed. I could be dying of cancer and I still laugh!
First saw this about 40 years ago while still living in Saudi Arabia. I still remember laughing so hard that I actually broke into a sweat AND fell off the couch as well. Will never, ever forget it.
Great story to hear. Carol had so many funny skits. That one is definitely in my top 5 list as number one. RIP Tim Conway you made all of us laugh so hard. From a Canadian fan 🙏🕊🇨🇦❤️🇺🇸
OMG, I have always, always wondered what was going on with that sketch and if Tim was just off in his own little world of ad lib. Love the "notes" of just "good luck." Thank you a million times for posting this fabulous explanation. Yep, priceless.
This is wonderful. Tim was known for this superb improvisational stuff, so I think he collapsed because he thought he was the one in control of the situation, and when Vicky reacted perfectly in character with a perfect putdown, it iced his comedy cake! :-)
I love the way Conway paced his narrative. He was watching to see Carol recover and start to ask her question of Momma when he would hit her with the next line forcing her to stop again. I remember seeing this on TV as a child and it is still one of the funniest stories ever shown on television. People will still be laughing at this 50 years from now, a fitting tribute to Tim Conway and the cast of the show.
Tim is so straight faced through all his sketches. The fact he can be so funny and look so serious is what made him so funny. Just glad they were able to get him in this sketch.
I don’t know how Vicki kept it together. I’ve seen this video so many times and I still laugh so much that I have tears rolling down my face. Best blooper ever!!❤
Watch Vicki closely. The dress rehearsal she has her head down. The second time through, as soon as Carol looks at her, she has to turn her head away. 😅😅
@@SimonQX I really wasn’t paying attention I guess. I didn’t realize there was a rehearsal then the one I’ve always seen. Thank you. I guess my attention span is going away just like my youth did behind my back 😆
I think what saves Vicki this time, is that Mama is supposed to have a scowl and a pursed lip. It probably made it easier for her to keep her straight (ish) face.
Harvey Korman said that all Tim Conway had to do was look at him and he’d break down. You can see it if you watch the show. I’m in awe of Vickie Lawrence keeping a straight face. Amazing. I’m so glad these bloopers were archived!
My faves were the elephant story, the dentist and the gone with the wind one. When Carol wore the curtsin dress...and her line...makes me laugh to this day!
Me too. Absolute comedy gold. Sometimes I do the arm motion and just say "G'nert" and my wife just loses it. Just that simple reminder is all it takes and she's off and running for a least five minutes (or so it seems).
She almost loses it a couple times in this one. You can see her clutching her hands and knees trying to force composure. Which she does quite quickly but still he almost had her too. But to turn all that tension he had built up back in his face like she did.. that was next level and you can tell Tim loved every second.
Comedy gold! What great times they all had working together back in that Golden Age of Comedy when stars didn’t have to curse every two words to get a laugh! Thanks for sharing this footage!
“If anyone remembers that sketch…”. Oh, Vicky, that sketch was UNFORGETTABLE! And every new generation that discovers it holds it as the funniest moment on television 😂😂😂
I watched this sketch on TV, live. and was crippled with laughter. EVERY time I see it again, I double-up with convulsive laughter. EVERY TIME. Got to be one of the funniest skits ever recorded.
Absolute comedic GOLD !! We went to see Vicki/Mama last month in North Tonawanda, NY. She is STILL a comedy treasure !! We thoroughly enjoyed the show. Had it been twice or three times as long, we would have GLADLY drunk in the talent and comedy ! Vicki and Carol were an iconic TEAM.
I love this story for two reasons: 1) Vicki's final line, breaking up Tim and Dick and Carol (Carol was already broken up, but still) is one of the funniest moments in TV history, right up there with "As god is my witness I thought turkeys could fly!", "What does a yellow light mean?", and "I had this dream where I was an innkeeper in Vermont!" 2) I have slayed by repeating Tim's elephant story. It still lays 'em in the aisles, decades later.
All these years later (after seeing the original air) still funniest thing I ever saw. Being able to cap that off like that? Genius all around. Still has it. Thank you for the compilation. Well done.
This was one of my favourites! I love watching it over and over. The cast was awesome in every show but this went above and beyond. Too bad we didn't have shows like that today.
Thanks for all those years of gut busting laughs. You could have sold the out-takes as an Ab workout video! You are all geniuses at your comedy craft...LOVE IT!
Tim Conway was one of the best comedians to ever grace the little screen. WHen he is paired up with Harvey or Don Knotts, hilarity ensues and he KNOWS what buttons to press to get the co-star going. Look at all the old man sketches with Tim and Harvey, especially the fireman skit. Chaffed from sliding down the pole. The walk, the CPR. Harvey couldn't hold back. Pure comedic genius and not once was a dirty word used, well, except for Vikki in this skit, which was the icing on the cake and SO appropriate.
What exactly does mama say when everyone busts up laughing at the end, I keep listening to it over and over and can't figure it out...although it's still hilarious 😂
I did the same..could never figure out what Vicki said..thank you for letting us know! I thought if it could make Tim Conway lose it..must had been hilarious and it is!
I was a faithful viewer of the show and to this day I remember that sketch and Vicki destroying Tim. Even though the line was bleeped, you could easily make out the WORD that laid waste to the cast! Thanks for that memorable moment in TV history, Vicki. and Carol!😂🤣
Conway caused convulsions and enjoyed the hell out of it, as did the viewers. I don't believe any one person has ever been a source of more laughter than he was.
That is the funniest scenes in all tv history. Loved Carol’s show loved each of this cast, to see Dock Van Duck lose it just floored me and it was great hilarity
