Elephants are worshiped in Sri Lanka and our Tuk-Tuk driver promised us some elephants. He delivered by taking us to his temple and showing us the elephants he worships!

Nice videos of Sri Lanka but just one thing. Elephants aren't actually worshipped in Sri Lanka. They are used extensively in Buddhist Festivals and Rituals. As they are used in this way, they are highly respected by many.

Sadev Abeyrathne thanks for the correction! We managed to see two elephants and wanted to see more. We didn't however want to pay into elephant tourism but we did manage to find a nice place in Thailand ;)

Unfortunately, these temple elephants have a horrible life. If you search what Pajan is you will see the reality of their lives. They are used in festivals and rituals but they are not respected. They are abused into submission and neglected. I wish it was different!

Family Bites Travel the use of elephants in our religious festivals is a tradition that had been practiced for many centuries in our culture. We can't change our traditions just because of some foreigners don't approve of them. But we should take care of our domesticated elephants better.
