A herd of Asian elephants in southwest China's Yunnan Province has stunned the world with an unprecedented northbound trek, sparking curiosity, concern and widespread debate. Following their "long march" of more than a year, the giants are now slowly moving southward.
Back in June, a CGTN crew followed the elephants on their tracks. The journey provides a unique insight into how local authorities are responding to the challenge of keeping both the animals and the people they come across safe. The crew also traveled to the original habitat of the elephants in Xishuangbanna to learn more about China's efforts to protect the endangered species and defuse conflict between the animals and humans.

Elephants have an innate instinct to migrate. Confining them in restricted areas will not work. Elephants need large areas where to roam. This is how nature works. As the elephants are very destructive with respect to vegetation they consume because of their voracious apatite, their migration to other areas gives time for the areas the elephants had previously herded upon to regenerate its vegetation. A circular migration system must be created whereby the elephants are allowed enough space to herd in circular fashion until the time that the vegetation of their previous herding grounds have been fully regenerated and replenished with vegetation whereby the elephants would again turn back to their original feeding pastures.

What a delightful and positive approach to the wandering herd. It makes my heart smile to see people working hard to find ways for both people and elephants to enjoy this long trek. Hearing people say things like crops can be grown again but once the elephants are gone it will be forever. And people happy to work in tourism available because of the elephants. Such a great thing to be planning food supplies and using parked trucks to keep the elephants away from trouble... this is one of the best stories I've ever heard of in which no one blames the elephants. I cannot say that people in my country would treat them so lovingly. Huge congratulations are due for all those working to make this journey positive for all involved!

well done! a very interesting video showing how fascinating these majestic animals are - hopefully nature has shown by this migration that elephants should never lose their lives to a piece of ivory which is part of their birthright- the respect shown by the villagers towards them is affirming -

What a cute group of elephants!People in China really have a smart way to deal with nature, and it is so respect the animals' instinct. I see a lot of nice pictures in this video and just can not express the feelings of the moment of beauty of nature in China. A new supper power,I believe U can and will bring something different to the whole world!

God bless the people in these provinces who tolerated the elephants. One farmer said “the crops can still be harvested, but once an elephant dies, he is gone forever.” True! Salute also to the government for providing the affected families as well. Maybe its better that these people shall be relocated elsewhere? Far from the migration trail. I saw that Disney+ Feature which Megan narrated, elephants will always trek that path over and over again. Looking forward to a follow up documentary on this @CGTN. Good job!

@dawsie
@dawsie 3 года назад
@@beebsarelli no not the side where they suffer you blooming idiot, the side of where they care for the wildlife and want to preserve it where they learn to live side by side with nature. For you to look at this and only see suffering days a lot about you as a person….. What I saw I. This video was how they were watching and learning about the elephants and also making sure that the villages along the way were kept safe, how they were placing food out for the elephants to lessen the impact on the villages fields, how they were telling insurance companies that they need to payout on the claims that the people put in due to any damage made by the elephants. But all through this they have not once forced the elephants to turn around and go back I like the face they have learned so much from the elephants this past year during their migration. I like the fact that they care enough about both the villages and the elephants that they want to keep them both safe. I also like the face that many of the villages have worked out that if they plant crops in the jungle and wooded areas just for the animals it will stop them from going into their fields and eating their crops. They are finally figuring it out that they can live side by side with nature if they use the same principle I have done when planting out my veggie garden ……….1 plant each for myself and Dad, 3 plants for the local wild life. This is something I have always done so that not only do we get food on the table but also the local,wildlife will also get feed without impacting what I need for the home. I know there was a lot of information in the video but for you to zero in on the suffering but not what they were doing to fix the suffering is just beyond me….. Watch it again only this time open your eyes to all of it. To the fact so many of the people are I love with these elephants and they are not scared of them some of them had never seen an elephant in their lives and you could see the wonder in their faces to actually get to see them for real and it’s a story many will tell their children and grand children in the years to come.

I am from an area where interaction with wild Asian elephants is a regular phenomenon. It's where the Gangetic plain meets the Himalayan foothills in Eastern India. They roam across a very large area, including the neighboring countries viz Nepal and Bhutan. Population encroachment to the wildlife habitat is a problem here. I like the approach shown by the authority as shown in this video, though it's very difficult to continue with this endeavor with rising number of similar herds. Only if we can vacate more space for them with our sustained urbanization, there can be a chance of peaceful coexistence. And even that has a tipping point. An optimum equilibrium has to be defined later.

So what is your point Paul? The 1.4 billion people Chinese don't matter...as long as CCP looks good in this propaganda piece? May, I remind you that 4 have died so far!!! Yes, those that left the herd are vanquished.... BUT they don't mention that! smh
@weewilliewinkle
@weewilliewinkle 3 года назад
@@beebsarelliAt first sight of this story I was amazed that they had not just shot all the elephants out of hand because they were causing an inconvenience. Given the CCP's lack of respect for human life that would have been par for the course, but that is not what they had done so I must admit that at first sight I was somewhat disarmed by this. I am well aware that if they had been humans and Uighurs or Falun Gong then they would be in dead trouble. I suppose this video has been put out to try and counter in some way the torrent of bad publicity the CCP has been getting at a political level but the only thing that would remedy that would be a counter revolution and the leaders arraignment in the dock at the International Criminal Court at The Hague.

Well, it is what you say! I find it unspeakable that these elephants are clearly poisoned by allowing them to drink the tainted 'gray water' in the concrete sewage tank. I think in this thread you and I are probably the only non-chinese commenters! So many are CCP trolls...... I think the reason they were stolen was for elites to eat them!
