Stephen, I'm a big fan! Would not say anything if I had no concern for you. You're an engineer. Machines are designed using a margin of safety. For elevators, the margin of safety is typically >6. Means to lift a 400 lb. load an elevator should be able to actually lift 2400 pounds!!! Harbor freight chinajunk engineers write their specs with SALES in mind .Safety is not even a close second place. So that 1320 lb. "rating". is highly suspect. I know of 2 guys who had a lift like yours fail. Both are permanently injured. Permanent lives of PAIN! Use the lift for loads and not humans . Also you can buy a 30 ft. safety reel. Used by construction workers to attach safety belts to. When they suddenly fall the reel catches them. Could be attached to a lift.

When you spoke about the put the motor on the bottom and have the cable go to the top you still be pulling the cables the same speed it wouldn't double your cable you'd have to put your pulley on the elevator and put the hook back up the top that would double your load

I like the idea a lot! Even could double as a repair stand for bringing machines up to a more comfortable working height (a lawn mower for instance)

I would use 2 cables on the same winch with 2 mounting points, also some kind of safety brake just incase, shouldn't be too hard to figure out 👍🙂

I have a lift just like this but after watching a video of a gentleman falling 8' when the shear pin in the winch failed I decided that I would not ever ride my elevator. I use it to lift material but in my mind I am always imagining it failing, I also make sure there is nothing in the line of fire when I am making a lift or have one suspended on the second floor. I also added a device along with the winch cable to act as a secondary safety feature. I used the spooling device that someone working at heights would strap to their body harness. It will lock when the strap is reeled out too fast and stop their fall. I use my ladder to go up and down and use my elevator to lift the heavy loads. It has transformed my barn and brought it to another level. Be safe.

I saw that video too. That dude was SUPER lucky he wasn't sitting the other way on that platform, or he'd have hit his head on the workbench on the way down. Seeing him not dead or permanently maimed is enough to make one believe in God. 😅
@fveggerby
@fveggerby 2 года назад
If mounting the motor on the platform, you don't need to run cable up AND down. Just up. ;) That will also eliminate the long electric cable to the "remote"

Real elevators have safety brakes for a reason. Don't ride that thing and instead of believing that 1/2 of 1320 lbs is a safe weight, I wouldn't try to lift much more than 400 lbs, including the weight of the platform. No brakes and Chinesium winch is too much risk for me. Just be safe and use the lift for lifting and use the stairs for climbing.
@utubeape
@utubeape 2 года назад
well, the safety limit is not the weight at which there is failure, chances are the winch could lift much higher weight before breaking the cable or whatever
@joequixotic3039
@joequixotic3039 2 года назад
@@utubeape the safety limit is zero pounds for human use. The winch may indeed be capable of lifting more than it's rating because it has a warranty and I'm sure Harbor Freight doesn't want to pay out but the rating I would put on it is how much weight can do an 8' drop on it without destroying the wood studs the rails are bolted to. As I said, I wouldn't try to lift much more than 400 lbs. Luckily that's quite useful for the task. Not many could climb a ladder with 100 lbs. Still no humans should ride a lift without any safety mechanisms.
@moonolyth
@moonolyth 2 года назад
@Joe Quixotic To each their own. But in agreement, at least some sort of clicking pin for a break. Stuff like this or roofing hoist on ladders are great for dead weight. "Material" that is. I still love the idea, though.
@joequixotic3039
@joequixotic3039 2 года назад
@@moonolyth real lifts and elevators have brakes on the lift platform or elevator car, not the cable since the cable is a single point of failure. The idea itself is ok, it just might cause a lot of damage or injury if it fails because it was not designed to fail safe.

A much better way to do this is the traditional Dutch method. Have a large removable window or French doors in the gable. Have a beam or I-beam that protrudes out the front of the building to the outside, centred above the window with a sturdy hook or eyelet. This preserves all the floor space and lets you get big bulky or heavy items up to the attic. A lot of Dutch houses will have a vertical line of large windows up the front of the building to allow you to get furniture to every floor very easily. It makes thing so simpler and faster and you don't damage furniture or walls trying to get a bed or sofa or the stairs.

You need a saw tooth locking safty feature...if the cable frays snaps etc or something happens to the wench... the ratching mechanism will lock into the Sawtooth locks mount to sides of both rails locking the elevator into place not dropping down to the ground.

You have a great/sturdy lift for your shop. I don't know if I missed hearing it in the video but did you weld the super strut sections together? I imagine the joint would be weak, otherwise, and could separate, hanging up the trolley wheels as they pass through, under load. Perhaps others here on your channel may have suggested retractable safety straps (much like the mechanism in your car seat belts) that would break a fall should the winch or wire cable suddenly/unexpectedly fail. Thanks for sharing your video.
